Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/BF.2ADIAE/1203.1.2.1.1.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: <<We WERE told this on the various admin lists.>> So, one should only expected to be informed of major issues IF one subscribes to various admin lists??? But then again, that probably IS the mindset of those who inform SUBSCRIBERS of the update before the admins..... Joan, learning of a major issue as a subscriber to a mailing list is in NO WAY the same as being informed, as the list admin, of the same issue.

Thanks for your help, Marilyn I'd leave them however the poster entered them although OConnor will not be found in a search in the same way O'CONNOR will. I do think most people researching these names know to try searching for any possible variations. Joan

Whenever the gateway issues with Mailman are resolved we were told a new gateway address would be placed on a *global* accept list--and no one was sure whether this *global* accept list could be overridden by moderation. 3. I like this feature. Half of my lists have migrated, and I can see that it saves spam. Will we be able to do this manually after the migration has finished? I administer all the boards for my mailing lists. Let me repeat a key phrase, with emphasis: "the gateways will not work UNTIL the list has been updated">> My Reply: I'm sticking to my story that WE (admins on the various admin lists) were told the gateway had not been expected to work at all and they were surprised it did work in sending mail from the boards. I doubt the problems on the list side were anticipated either in view of the fact they didn't realize the messages would be coming from the boards at all. As for when this all will be fixed--since the notice about the board launch you quoted above is now obsolete that changes everything. The current info is that once all lists are migrated they will work on fixing the gateway glitches -- since the boards are on hold and it won't get fixed automatically when the boards launch because that won't be anytime soon. 3. I'm interested to know why you'd want to close the open gateway? Isn't it better to also have list input to a board poster's query? All but one of my boards are open (list admin closed it), and in most cases, I also admin the list, so this is a new question for me, that I hadn't thought of. I do like your "shakedown cruise" analogy... :o) Carlette ----- Original Message ----- From: "Pat M Mahan" <mahan@hiwaay.net> To: <boards-admins@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, September 07, 2006 6:24 AM Subject: Re: [BAd] Gateways to Lists - Joan > Joan, > > Are we still going to be able to 'ban' the open board gateways to the > lists > when this 'shakedown cruise' is over? > > Pat

Remember to enter your SURNAMES in the Surname List for Indexing, but only those names you put in the BODY of your message. 5. Pick the Classification/Category of Query/Reply. a. Entry of other Data Source Types is discouraged at this time. We can discuss this on the LEPP-L mailing list or write to me personnally. Although I KNOW admins who post their own version of board rules MEAN well--I sort of cringe whenever I see an admin do this--unless there are unique features of your specific board that DO require special rules that don't apply to ALL boards. If not, it is FAR preferable to allow RootsWeb to state in the board rules and help text and faqs what the rules are for posting to our boards. Why? Because boards are open to use by everyone who follows the rules set by ROOTSWEB--not rules an admin decides he wishes to enforce or rules he may misinterpret. That level of control is reserved for mailing lists--not boards. In the above "rules" you state that surnames must appear in the MESSAGE BODY in order to be included in the surname box--but that is NOT what general board rules say--the surnames must be mentioned in the message--and that includes the body of the message as well as the SUBJECT of the message. Also your rule that other types of data posts are not to be posted to the board? Where did you find that in the board rules? ANY on-topic data may be posted to the boards as long as it meets RootsWeb's board rules--board admins simply do not have the discretion to restrict a board poster's rights beyond the limits set by RootsWeb. Joan
