Should I shorten the subject? -------------------- Judy; I see these long subject lines occasionally and I'd just leave it the way it is. Although we Board Admins differ in our opinion of these occasionally. :-) Rick B
Judy; Looks fine to me. I'd leave it on the Board. Rick B ----- Original Message ----- From: Judy Florian To: boards-admins@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, September 15, 2006 8:14 PM Subject: [BAd] Opinion please http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/message/an/surnames.wishart/144 Is this post okay?
LOL Are extra long subjects ok? It was mostly put in the subject line (3 lines) and only 1 sentence in the message. Should I shorten the subject? (SUBJECT LINE) George H Wishart born 1851 to 1854 had a brother named william wishart immigrated to america ? maybe around 1863 to 1873 or possibly earlier I can't find the records george died just before 1940 can't find his death certificate or his brothers (end subject line) Judy -- ~PRIMARY NAMES: ANTHONY, BAKER, FLOWERS, LANE, SEPTER~ Washington Co PA free Websites: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~florian http://freepages.family.rootsweb.com/~florian County Coordinator for http://www.rootsweb.com/~pawashin/ Researchers of Washington County PA, join our map: http://www.frappr.com/researchingwashingtoncopa

I suggest that you view the following post in this lists archives regarding David Ellison, who many of us are familiar with as someone who baits the boards for potential customers. http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/BOARDS-ADMINS/2003-04/1051731145 -- Kathie Harrison Family Trees Grow with Love Ancestral Whispers http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~irishrose/
Judy if it is one of David Ellison's posts he definitely abuses the boards for his own purposes [money] and I would report the abuse to staff. I disagree, since the subject line is not meant to be a mile long and have the whole query in it. I would contact the poster and ask them if they can please post their query using a better format --example subject: John Doe b.1825 IN d. 1875 OH then they can put a query in the correct spot and give the details and what they are searching for more info on. And to be sure to include the LAST NAMES that are in the message in the SURNAME box with the commas........teach 'em nice and they may appreciate it. Judy, Normally I try to shorten the subject lines, but in this case you would lose most of the query, so I think writing and asking them to repost it, with a suggested subject line, would be the best bet. Looks to me like the person may be unfamiliar with posting on the boards and was typing the query in the subject line and when that ended continued it to the message box. I would email her and explain how it works and ask her if she would like to repost her query. Apparently it must have been spam, because I haven't seen this ad anymore and I am no longer having problems with my sessions. Thanks !
I just received two notifications for yesterday's board messages, so things must be starting to work again. Does anyone know whether they'll go back and pick up the missed notifications? In my case, the last notifications received were September 6. Beth
Hi Mary: Catching up on mail..... 1) we CAN mention labs/DNA services by name and remain within the AUP... we just cannot include their URL that connects to any part of their site as their sites are commercial --- no matter that it be the "free" Public page for the project. 2) The only "issue" I can see with this post is that if you read it, the main topic is the DNA testing, not Rubin genealogy, per se. That would make it a bit suspect for keeping on topic. However --- as was explained to me years ago when I asked for a complimentary board for my Stewart DNA list, I was told that there is one board per surname and all items that relate to that surname are on topic for the board. DNA included. My inclination would be to leave it where Rubins can find it to use to do their genealogy --- so many use genetics in their genealogy tool box, just as we use computers. 3) As I recall others' comments mentioned that mtDNA does not track to genealogy... I agree... however, I think that Robert was merely setting criteria for who is allowed to test under the project for Rubins. And this is a side issue from Board Administration. Yes, but my point was, one List to one Board, no matter how similar, no matter how close in name or close in function. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/BF.2ADIAE/1204.2.1.1 Message Board Post: What Judy means is that if you want to gateway you need a board named Obituary to go with the Obituary board, and a board named World Obits to go with your World Obits list. All you need to do is request they be created, and after that's done follow the procedures for gatewaying the boards to the lists.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/BF.2ADIAE/1204.2 Message Board Post: Peter, If I understand right, you want to know why a Gateway has to match in name? It is basically a policy that ONE board is gatewayed to a List of the same name. So 2 Boards can't feed into 1 combined list. If I read your concern correctly, it is not about your competency. If you requested / no one else was the Admin of a Board OR the List for that Board (or it didn't exist), then you could request a List of the same name as that board. Otherwise, what Joan wrote is true -- Admins don't have any other info to share, nor can we change anything about this. Hopefully I interpreted part of your question correctly. If I did and if both Lists are available for both Boards, why not request List Admin positions for both? Judy
