Just be sure what's connected under the duplicate first. Or you might lose a whole bottom section of a thread. Also, if your cache has become too large, pages won't load. Do a disk clean-up to empty your cache. Today I received a response to the message I sent to the help desk per advice of Joan Young. The message was sent on Sept 8, 2006 and I realize “the sky was falling at that time”. I appreciate all the responses and apologize profusely to anybody I offended with some of my comments. When someone hides behind “volunteer” and posts the only posting they have ever posted that quotes all the rules and regulations accept the constitution or the bill of rights, I will respond direct and up front. As Bill O’Reilly say’s, “ the spin stops here!!’ THANK YOU.
lklein@mindspring.com wrote: snipped > > As others have already noted, your slow connection is not RootsWeb's > fault or responsibility. That is not entirely true. The problem with today's web designers is that they are making no attempt to keep the file sizes down and are using all the bells and whistles available in the latest HTML standard. Just look at the source code file for most any page on the web today and you will see all the garbage that is in it, all taking time to download. It does not have to be that way. I manage a County GenWeb site and from day one I wrote all the HTML on the site in what I call "KISS HTML" (KISS = Keep It Simple, S****) - no CSS (cascading style sheets), minimized images and icons, nothing fancy. The HTML editor I use to write the code is the "wet-ware" between my ears. Check out: http://www.rootsweb.com/~qcchatea/ and see if you don't agree that it loads far faster than most web sites on the web. All the data is there, just no fancy "cool" features to clog up the download. It is not that hard to do but it does require a knowledge of the basic HTML tags (a couple of dozen of them) and how they are used but the modern web designers take the easy way out with a full feature WYSIWYG HTML editor like Frontpage and also want the page to look really cool. We who are stuck on dial up lines have to suffer the consequences. End of rant :-) Burt Lang - who does all my browsing on a 33K dialup line.

Posting inappropriate messages complaining about whether his posts come through the gateway is also a VALID reason to delete his messages [by staff in absence of an admin]. Complaints should be taken to the HELP DESK and not on the message boards or lists. And personal attacks are most definitely against MESSAGE BOARD RULES.

On one board that I admin, the same individual posted duplicate queries about a minute apart. Should one be deleted? If so, can I do it, or do I have to request the deletion by staff? Wilson
Yes Wilson, you can and should delete duplicates. Although it appears some of the messages you posted have been deleted. Since the board does not have an admin at this time, it had to be a member of staff who deleted them. None of us can help you. You'll have to contact the help-desk. One of the messages that has been deleted is in the archives at: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/HOLDEMAN/2006-09/1159131757 Quite frankly, that was inappropriate for any board or list. Jackie

I, too, have dial-up, but I usually don't see any huge delays. Perhaps you have too many processes running, you have a misconfigured popup blocker, or your firewall needs tweaking, or you need to do some basic computer maintenance (clearing cache, cleaning up your disks, defragmenting). The folks on the Computers list (see http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Internet_Help/COMPUTERS.html) may be able to advise you. Like Jackie, I use Firefox, which I find runs a little faster than Netscape. Try cable modem or satellite if you're desperate. Lynne
DUMP AOL. Get a real internet provider. I suggest Earthlink. I use it when I'm traveling and I've been able to get online in just about any place I've tried with great success. They even have a local access number in my hometown of 1200 in rural Oklahoma where it's even long distance to the county seat. When I was on dial-up, I discovered the Firefox browser was much faster than Internet Explorer. I checked a web-page that took 18 seconds with IE to load, and with Firefox (running simultaneously) the same page loaded in 8 seconds. And I have far fewer pop-ups! The only reason I keep IE on my computer is some Microsoft programs depend on it (such as Picture It). Jackie -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Judy, Anc? :Like I know what that is? LOL I am so far in the boonies I don't get anything:( Bob
Hi Bob, I was on dial up until a few weeks ago. But, having dial-up was a matter of my funds not RW's fault. Yes, it was lousy to not be able to get some high-byte content like videos. But that wasn't the fault of the web. Meaning, we wouldn't change anything about the web or about websites if we did complain. That would be like complaining to the phone company that you don't have touch tone and "everyone else does." Fact is, there are some people who don't have touch tone phone service-- my grandma was one. She used what she had, just as I used what computer / ISP and dial-up I had. Now I can get cable. So I moved "up" a little in the world. But do I blame computer-age for continuing to improve the internet so much that I became obsolete in how I accessed it? Well, it made me crazy sometimes, jealous other days -- but I knew complaining wouldn't solve one iota of my personal dislikes about the WWW or access. Oh... AND... high speed ain't all it's said to be, with frequent disconnects and if satellite links at the company go down, so does TV AND computer access! For HOURS. Now that is something to complain about!! LOLOLOL If you can, use Internet explorer to access RW & Anc. It works better than AOL-- most of the time! Been there, done that. Now I will say I hate that security box on Rootsweb. It comes up 3x. And yes I have my internet security adjusted within a good range. I sign into Ances. without that security box, so why does RW have it come up repeatedly? grr Judy On 9/25/06, RWListOwner@aol.com <RWListOwner@aol.com> wrote: > > I've complained before, will complain until I get high speed, in another > dozen years, that you all do not understand how we with slow speed feel. > When I get online it takes over a minute to bring up Rootsweb, it > takes more > time to bring up the boards and my problem lists.
