Yipes! I wasn't aware we Board admins were to use utmost caution in restoring messages from the Recycle Bin. I appreciate all the advice given and will ask the particular researcher to contact Staff about his post's deletion, and suggest he continue to refer others to grave photos at Findagrave--minus the ".com" or the actual URL. Thank you, Joan, Jackie and Lauren! Sandy Peed Admin

If it isn't relevant to the original post it is attached to--then it should/can be moved to its own thread if possible. For instance, a post on the SMITH board is about John SMITH and wife Mary JONES in Virginia, and someone replies about this Mary JONES--that is relevant. However if someone just replies and says I'm researching Susie and Joe JONES in California--then that isn't unless the reply goes on to suggest some connection to Mary JONES. Joan

Asche Correct---there would be no reason to notify admins (specifically) of the RootsWeb/Ancestry boards when these new German boards are not part of the same system. It would be the equivalent of notifying us if there was going to be a change made at GenForum. All same ownership--but different board systems. I would guess this is all part of Ancestry's push to become more Internationally oriented--which is a good thing! Joan

I usually just use the report abuse link and ask the staff to review the post. It's probably been posted to many boards anyway. When in doubt ask the staff: ATTN STAFF: Please review this post etc. J. Hello Folks, What should be done with a post and thread like this? Example: On the JONES surname board, someone posts this message: < If your surname is JONES, SMITH, BROWN, BAKER or KELLY, I would like to hear from you. > So someone replies: < I'd like to connect with anyone searching for John BROWN, who was born .....and his wife is Mary BROWN.....children....yada yada yada... > A long thread continues all about the BROWN families with no mention made of connections to the JONES family which is the TOPIC of the board. Shouldn't this thread be moved to the BROWN surname board? This DID NOT happen on the JONES board....I'm only using it as an example to protect the innocent...or....guilty. It DID, however, happen twice on one of my family surname boards (which I don't admin.). I reported it as abuse twice and nothing was done. Would appreciate some opinions, Thanks! Lou

Hi Sandy: Although I certainly cannot speak for STAFF and there may be other reasons, I suspect that STAFF removed it due to findagrave having a store on their site... The site appears managed mostly by an individual, not a non-profit organization, thus making it "commercial." This is an explanation/detail that should be passed to the poster, so they know for future and do not waste their volunteer hours posting things that will be removed. You might offer to the poster they resubmit the same post, without the .com link. Copy and paste their verbiage and send it to them to make it easier, in the event they no longer have it on hand. However, as you are the admin and did not delete the post, STAFF did. I would return it to the recycle bin. We are not to restore posts. It would be a rare instance that restoration would be appropriate -- and ONLY if we personally had removed them and KNOW exactly why... and perhaps had made an error in doing so. Scratching my head, Sandy Sandy- If you are the board admin and you didn't remove the post, that means the post was removed by staff and only board staff can explain to you why the post was removed. There are quite a few possible reasons why staff might remove a post -- commercial link, cross-posted on multiple boards are two that come to mind. But only board staff could tell you (or the poster) why the post was removed. Joan

I'd agree that it is likely Board notifications rather than reply notifications. Also, I think leaving that post on the board will be confusing to other posters. Here is an example of the board post that first alerted me to the matter, on the London>London location board: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/message/an/localities.britisles.england.lnd.london/294 The recent 'reply' by Mary Wells (6 Oct 2006 12:52 PM ) indicates she received a notification about this thread, but I can't see her address posted anywhere within.
