Under normal circumstances (I admin 25-30 boards) that is exactly what I do. These circumstances are rather different than others I've had in past years. I prefer not to say anymore about it here, but I will indeed be addressing these matters within the next day or two...using my very best judgment, diplomacy, and courtesy. It has helped me, though, to touch base with other admins for advice in order to make the best decisions possible. I thank you for your time and effort to give me your thoughts and suggestions. Bree

Thanks, Marilyn You can report it to the HelpDesk--probably a "side effect" of the work being done on the boards that we've all noticed. Joan

It has happened numerous times for me on my boards and staff is aware of the problem and is working on it. Though it is an imtermittent problem so sometimes I can move messages and other times not. See the HELP DESK: http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/ They have known about it since before the 20th of Nov, -- Kathie Harrison Family Trees Grow with Love Ancestral Whispers http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~irishrose/ ------------------------- On 12/3/06, Kaesemein@aol.com <Kaesemein@aol.com> wrote: > Hello, > > While attending to my boards this morning, I'm trying to move a message > from the DAVIDSON surname board to the DAVISON surname board by typing: > > surnames.davison into the window and clicking Submit, but I keep > getting this error: > > There was an error with the database. > Please check and resubmit. > Can anyone tell me what is wrong? It looks like the resolution was higher than necessary. I can only access the first page. The rest of the pages just aren't viewable for me. Wouldn't it be better if you posted the pages to a web site and then put the link to the site in L & A? If you don't already have a RootsWeb website, simply request one here: http://accounts.rootsweb.com/ Rel@ively, Patrice

I would cut way back on responding to her. First, you are not obligated to respond to posts. IF you can help a poster, do so. If I don't know a answer to a genealogy question, I don't HAVE to go find the answer. But even if a poster put a message on the Board asking me to do Board duties, I'd see if I can comply with the request and make NO reply. If I couldn't do the requested action, I'd probably write and explain why. But I agree, in the meantime, start deleting the chit-chat and the criticizing. You don't have to inform her beforehand. IF she asks why, write privately and just explain the boards have to kept free from chit-chat. You don't have to explain your actions, other than pointing out the Board Rules. Judy

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/BF.2ADIAE/5003.3 Message Board Post: I took a look at the board that you're referring to and my own opinion is that many of this person's messages should be deleted as well as your replies to her which are nothing but chit-chat and they are completely off topic for the board. Just as you explained, this person is using the board to chit-chat about anything and everything, and many of her messages have nothing to do with railway accidents. For instance the message, "Can you change a title for me?" and your reply have no relevance to Railroad Accidents. Both should be deleted after you change the title as she requested. Ask yourself this question about each post: What does this post have to do with Railway Accidents? I also don't see what badmouthing the Library of Michigan has to do with Railway Accidents. Evidently this person needed to fill out a form, all pertinent information was given except the name of the railroad, so the person is now annoyed with the library ; can't deal with them, etc. and bad-mouths them on your board. I don't feel that you need to apologize to her because SHE didn't fill out the form completely and the library couldn't find her information. I would delete her complaint and your reply. Remind yourself: What is the purpose of your board according to your own information under Links & Announcements? " It's for posting questions or information about U.S. railroad accidents." Don't let yourself be drawn into replies and debates that are off topic for the board. Just my own personal opinion, Marilyn

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/BF.2ADIAE/5003.1 Message Board Post: Bree- Under the current board system there isn't any way to block a poster or keep a poster from posting to your board--the boards are there for all users--even those who become pests or who don't use the boards properly even after we explain it to them again and again. The most admins can do is move posts that are not suited for your board to the most appropriate board, or delete those posts that are not suitable for any message board. You can also edit the subject, surnames, and classification when needed. I know this can be a chore with some posters who just don't "get it" but that is part of our "jobs" as admins. Joan

That gave me hope. Finally I was able to view them also. However, Ray and I must now go back to work on these attachments, as they are not appearing in the manner that will help most users. Ray is, in fact, the copyright holder, so we have no copyright infringements. Many thanks, Bree

Thanks for replying. I wonder why the attached files won't appear for me. Hmmm... I'll change some browser settings and see whether something is blocking me from viewing those attachments in Regular Mode. There is an extremely good reason why Ray and I needed to place unchanging records locations on the board. We have found no other way to keep this information in front of every user without posting and reposting it every time it falls off Page 1 of the board. It's static information that every researcher needs, and we don't want it buried on the board. Neither of us knows how to create or maintain an external website, and neither of us wants to, so this was the only solution we could think of. Do you have an idea that would be better for us? The copyright holder, I believe, is my railroading guru, Ray State. I will definitely double-check with him, though. I had not noticed the copyright, so I thank you for bringing that to my attention. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/BF.2ADIAE/5003 Message Board Post: Okay, my second problem for the day -- one that I have never encountered before -- is that I have one particular poster on my U.S. Railroad Accidents board right now who is taking undue advantage of my admin time and my railroad expert's time by posting and posting....without reading replies carefully, without abiding by board rules, and without writing replies (to replies she's received) that make any sense. It appears that her goal is getting attention from people on the board, rather than using the guidance she's been given. In short, this gal seems to be obsessively posting questions, complaints (about a particular library), and material that is not relevant (or is far beyond the scope) of the typical usage of my board. Thus far, my RR expert and I have been cordial, helpful, and attentive to her needs. I have spent HOURS cleaning up her improperly posted messages (misuse of Surname line, irrelevant Subject lines, misplaced replies to the wrong messages, etc.) and my RR expert has spent hours guiding her and advising her. We are growing weary... Is there a name for these people? How long should an Admin let this go on? As long as the poster appears to be doing legitimate research and is not insulting people, etc., what is an Admin expected to do about a poster who is hogging board resources and using it as a personal free-time companion service? She has not yet gone beyond the line of decency, but I really want to get her off the board. She has just recently been ejected from a major library for exceeding its research request resources, and now she's basically doing a similar thing on my board. What am I allowed to do without getting into trouble with Ancestry's Message Board gods? Thanks, Bree

I also see a note on the image that it is copyrighted in 2003 -- so it doesn't look like you should be copying it to your page -- unless you have the copyright holder's permission of course. Joan

While in Admin Mode I am attempting to attach five separate files of railroad records locations (each in a separate .jpg file) to my Links & Announcements area. Each file contains one page of scanned text, so none of these .jpg files is exceptionally large. After attaching them, the do appear as attachments in Admin Mode. They're there and I see them. However, when I switch over to "regular viewer mode," as if I were not the admin, the attachments do not appear. Why? Two messages to the Help desk on this problem, sent weeks ago, have never been acknowledged or answered. Can anyone here on the Admin board help me? Thanks, Bree
