Congrats on trying to kick the habit, Bob. Hang in there. I can't even find the Admin side of the Boards. Oh by the way, is this Ancestry's Christmas Present to all of us? It appears that the current default view is now chronological, so I don't have to do anything special to get a chronological list of messages. What appears to be different is that the list of messages is threaded but in such a way that the most recently posted message provides the date/time that will be included in the list. So this is quite different from seeing a separate entry in the list for each message; with that prior arrangement, I found a threaded view to be particularly unhelpful because there was no guarantee that the most recent messages would be found on the first page of the list. With this combined threaded/chronological view found with the new board layout, the most recently posted messages will always be listed first, but now they'll bring along the thread that they are part of if one exists. But I must say that it took me quite some time to come to this realization...... -- Mary

When adminning the boards I manage, I * ALWAYS * use the chronological view as I find it much easier to work with. But I can't find any way to get a chronological listing of messages anymore. If it is still available, how do I get to it? If it is no longer available, why was this capability removed? I find it quite invaluable, and don't know that I even want to try adminning boards without it. If it's gone, can it be added back? Pretty please? -- Mary

However, I had updated my profile and username, and evidently was still logged in on another page with the old profile/username. Once I closed that other window, I was logged in automatically, and I hope that is the way it will be from now on. I certainly HOPE we will be able to sort by date -- otherwise, how will we be able to do our work? Valorie

In that vein, now that the new board look is here, when I click on log in I don't get my username to click on, I have to enter it and the password each time. I wondered why I got a subscriber emailing me today complaining about the format, I didn't realize the change over had occurred. I suppose there is no more sorting posts on a board by newest date first, is there? Bob (I knew I picked the wrong week to quit smoking)
Log in as admin and, if you have more than 3 boards, click the "Expand list" link. Look at the first line below your list of adminned boards..... Jackie -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Version: 7.1.409 / Virus Database: 268.15.9/573 - Release Date: 12/5/2006

My *very* preliminary list of steps backward: 1. No indication of whether a thread has been visited or not. 2. "Board Info" page - not all of the text on mine are appearing and NO graphics whatsoever. 3. Long URL's run "out" of the message box. 4. Scrolling down to see the messages on a board when I'm in admin mode. 5. No posting history when you click on an author's name. 6. Not all edits to surname field entries are appearing (I changed one on 11/14 and the ORIGINAL entry is appearing but some of the others are showing the edited entry....) 7. "Title" (what appears at the top of your browser) is the same regardless of which board you are on. Jackie Wilson Goddard -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.rw.admin.badmin/5005/mb.ashx Message Board Post: As you can see, the Ancestry and RootsWeb message boards were updated today. You may remember that some time ago all message board admins received an email announcing upcoming board updates, including new board admin tools. We also mentioned that we'd be providing a tutorial to help you learn to use the new tools. Today's update did not include the admin tool changes mentioned in our original email. Only a few minor changes were made, so no tutorial is necessary. In fact, some of your administration tools have even retained the "old", look. Here are some of those small changes you should be aware of: - The link to go to the admin center is now located at the bottom of each message board page and appears ONLY when you are logged in with your admin ID. - Some admin tools, such the Recycle Bin, are now located in the Page Tools box. - To make it easier for admins. to navigate between boards they administer, links to them now appear on all pages in the admin center. - "Links and Announcements" is now been renamed "Board Information." Board information is more descriptive and will help your board members better understand what this valuable resource is. - The "Community Guidelines" have replaced by the "Board Rules" as the "rules" for participation on the boards. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with these guidelines as part of your admin responsibilities. A link to the Community Guidelines can be found at the bottom of all message board pages. - The Board Help and Board FAQ pages have been completely updated. Links to those pages can be found at the bottom of all message board pages. Registration is now required in order to post to a board. This will help cut down on the amount of spam that is posted to the boards and will help message authors keep their contact information current. After trying several times, I wrote a post on the Boards-Admin Board, but when I clicked to post the message got a message saying the redirect wasn't working. I don't see anything on Help Desk about board problems other than the ones that have been there since November. Is this a known problem or should it be reported? Thanks, Beth Beth- I don't know whether you saw the earlier post by Melissa on the Boards-Admins board but the boards have been upgraded today. So they were down for a time during the upgrade. They should be accessible for you now though. Joan
Nancy, Then it isn't just me :-( First of all, I cannot get into manage my boards. No recognition of the only user name and password I've ever used for Ancestry & then Rootsweb boards. So I went in like I was just browsing and saw the boards and have to say I am very very upset if that is the way it is going to be. There is a way you can see the messages in "flat" style, I think it is called, but it doesn't look like we can change them from date order to threaded. Maybe I just don't know about it yet and will get the message that's supposed to be coming explaining how to admin the boards. I always reviewed in Date order and would "back into" each message of the thread, put them into threaded order and edit an entire thread at once. From the looks of what I saw today, that isn't going to happen. I hope I am wrong and the initial reaction will turn out not to be how I think it is. Otherwise, it is time to move onto other pursuits and leave the board admin duties to someone else. I never did get the notice on the BAd list about this - I saw it on the Listowners' list.
