This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.rw.admin.badmin/5006.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I'm disturbed about two things I've noticed tonight. One is that when the threads are viewed in total, there is NO indication of unread messages within those threads. Can it be possible that we will be expected to click EACH THREAD to check all the posts? Some of my little boards with 20 to 50 posts, no problem. The big ones? Forget about it. The other is that there seems to be no navigation. Sometimes when I find a new surname, I go to the board and read a bit, just to get a feel for the other researchers, what information is available, where they might have originated, where most emigrated to, etc. Once I finish a thread, that's it. I can't navigate to the next thread -- instead, I have to go back to the Board view, and move through them that way -- again, with no indication of which I have read, and which I have not. Not very user-friendly, at this point. And again -- I can't click on someone's name, and get a list of their posts? What is that about? I have no problem with the Public Profile page, and in fact have already filled a bit of mine out, but you know darn well most people are freaked out to do that, because they are constantly warned not to share private info online. The Public Profile page doesn't DO that, but -- oh well! Preview does not work for me, either. No indication that anything is happening, at all.
This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.rw.admin.badmin/5005.2.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: This is just my first day too, so don't hold me to this. When you are logged in with your admin login, you access your tools by clicking on a post. Once you click on a post, the same tools available to us before are still there, and so far for me, work the same way. This is how I tested it out -- I went to the old Admin pages, at http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=admin.main&r=rw&p= I was immediately redirected to http://boards.rootsweb.com/?view=admin (which, by the way, I like a LOT better), and from there, clicked on one of my boards, and then on a post. Then, I used find a board to jump to the Jones board (of which I am *NOT* the admin, thank goodness!!!), and tried the same thing there. I got the message that I was "not an admin", but it looked like I would be able to post like anyone else. I have only ONE login to the board, so this is a Very Good Thing. I hope this works for you, as it did for me. Oh, and once I was logged out of the "old" page, I was able to click directly on the link of a gatewayed post, and edit the surname line WITHOUT logging in again. I really like that. Valorie
I need to concur here. I don't like the admin version of the new boards. Two of the things I particularly dislike: 1. I cannot see which messages I have already visited. Guess this means I will have to keep a calendar showing the dates I have already visited and hope nothing new comes in on that particular day after I've been in. 2. Clicking on a message brings up all the messages in that thread but only the first one shows the surname field, therefore I have to go into the following ones individually. Once in I can see the surname fields have been edited. My boards all have surnames in lower case, however on the admin board some show up with the first letter of the surnames in upper case. Thinking that I somehow missed a message I go into edit and find that it is actually in lower case. Why is that? Laurie

This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.rw.admin.badmin/5006/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am trying to keep an open mind because I do realize when changes are made it is very normal to be aghast at how things just aren't the same. But ... I see that url links that used to be hot links are no longer hot links, so if someone wants to view that link, one must copy the link rather than simply click. Using the "flat view" for a thread, one can view a particular thread in chronological order with oldest first, which seems to be the default, then change to newest first. But go to a different thread, the default takes over and again must be changed to view newest first. A nuisance. When entering a board, it appears that the right hand column lists the threads that have new postings, even though the date of the original thread will appear at the top. For example, a thread started in 1999 with a response today will show that thread at the top. It will take some savviness for board viewers to pick up on that. Still can't tell which messages I've viewed during this recent foray. A great time waster. I have the surname boards for both King and Kings. I've tried to catch the message titles that have Kings in the subject and edit the subject to King when it is clear from the message content that it is indeed the singular King. I see that when I search the King board for subject Kings that messages I have previously edited several months ago to the singular still show up with the plural in the subject line in search results, but then I see I'm wasting my time when I actually click on the link to see that I've already edited that one. "My notifications" just came to my mailbox. Upon checking the boards and those threads, I see the surnames boxes have extraneous names that I had already edited out! Another time waster. <] : p When I click on the "administrator of the following boards" the list is incomplete. Not being able to see a person's posting history is a detriment. Sometimes a person posts a message that is rather vague on one board, but on another has given some further information on the same person that is useful for tracking the person mentioned on a different board. Example, one posts a query for info on Joe Mucketeemuck, but on a different board includes his relatives' names or other information which could be useful for the other vague post. I've been able to help make connections from checking what a person posted elsewhere Why is there a hotlink for gc-gateway@rootsweb.com on the gatewayed list? Totally useless. Doesn't take you to the board. If you were to click on it an send a message, it would go to the great void of cyberspace. And from the board side, it would be very helpful to have a link to the list information for the gatewayed boards so that one could check the archives. And when attempting to post this on the board and preview it, nothing happens. Nancy Pelham Todd
Marilyn, I'm in agreement with you and I'm disgusted with this change--especially after we received the notice that the board updates were put off indefinitely! I breathed a big sigh of relief when that notice came out---especially after all the headaches with the list migration. Now to throw this at us out of the blue AND to do it 3 weeks before Christmas is VERY thoughtless. All of a sudden I have to sit here tweaking around trying to learn how to admin. this "new and improved" look when I have other things to do to prepare for the holidays???? This "part time volunteer" job is turning into a full time job! Don't know why this couldn't have been put off until January when we're all snowed in with nothing to do. It took me almost an hour to try to find the login page to even get to my boards, until Joan Y finally provided the URL for the old Admin. Page, and now I see that my Username to access my PAID portion of ancestry, is showing up on the boards, which I'm NOT happy about AT ALL!!! How to I change that???? I'm also not seeing any surname window on any of the messages, and when I tried to edit and enter surnames and click "submit" it didn't work. And how do I go about getting the messages to show in Date Expanded mode. I think it's the only way to manage/edit messages.....especially when posters are replying to posts that are a few months or years old. To make matters worse......I'm on AOL and they are delaying ALL my rootsweb email 6 to 8 hours so I'm not getting replies to the problems/questions that are raised. BAH HUMBUG! :-( Another Marilyn ---------------original message------------------ In a message dated 12/7/2006 6:33:11 A.M. No recognition of the only user name and password I've ever used for Ancestry & then Rootsweb boards. So I went in like I was just browsing and saw the boards and have to say I am very very upset if that is the way it is going to be. There is a way you can see the messages in "flat" style, I think it is called, but it doesn't look like we can change them from date order to threaded. Maybe I just don't know about it yet and will get the message that's supposed to be coming explaining how to admin the boards. I always reviewed in Date order and would "back into" each message of the thread, put them into threaded order and edit an entire thread at once. From the looks of what I saw today, that isn't going to happen. I hope I am wrong and the initial reaction will turn out not to be how I think it is. Otherwise, it is time to move onto other pursuits and leave the board admin duties to someone else. I never did get the notice on the BAd list about this - I saw it on the Listowners' list. Because I was moving to a new area, I changed my e-mail address from bellsouth to a hotmail account. If I look at My Account in both Rootsweb and Ancestry, my e-mail is the correct lkleback@hotmail.com<mailto:lkleback@hotmail.com>. But when I look at the Board Information listing on the boards I admin, it still shows as kleback@bellsouth.net<mailto:kleback@bellsouth.net>. I no longer have access to that account. What haven't I changed?
This is saying that duplicate posts are OK, isn't it? How do I find the most appropriate board for my post? To select the most appropriate board for your post, think carefully about what information or question you are posting to determine which board would be most relevant. Try to choose the most specific board possible for your post. For instance, if you are posting a query about old county boundaries, post it to the appropriate county board rather than the country or state boards. Occasionally, it may be appropriate to post a similar message to multiple boards. In this case, please use your best judgment and consider carefully which boards would benefit most from your post and create a new subject line and modify the body to fit each board. It is not considered good etiquette to post a query or the same information to several boards at once and your duplicate messages may be deleted by the board staff or admin on all but the most appropriate board. You will have the most success if you post to one board specific to your message. Other members will be able to use a search to locate your post. Regards, Sharyn
In the Flat View I tried to remove several duplicate posts within a thread. When I click on Delete up comes the FIRST post in the thread. If I didn't notice this I would have removed the entire thread! It is not possible to click on the subject line and pull up posts within a thread in Flat View. Changing back to Thread View makes it possible to remove a post BUT instead of going back to the thread it was in, once it is deleted you are taken back to the main board. Not a problem if it is the most recent thread but if it is an old thread and you want to do more with it (this person posted the same message 3 times thinking it hadn't gone through) you have to find the thread again. Regards, Sharyn
Many of my boards are for Quebec and posts are in French. The accent marks are coming through as an unreadable mess. Here is an example: Toutefois, j'ai trouvé le 2e M de Rémi veuf de Madeleine Pelletier: il a épousé Zoée Caron (fille de Pierre et d'angélilque Bélanger) le 16 mai 1848 à La Pocatière. All old posts have been converted to this mess as well. Regards, Sharyn
HELP! My list of boards I admin is completely random. It was always Localities, then Surnames, then Topics with each section in alphabetical order. Now I have to look through all 516 to find the board I want. PLEASE tell me this will be fixed, and SOON. Regards, Sharyn
I hate the new board format. I need a darts to deflate this mess. I do NOT like having to type in my ONLY user name and password each and every time EVEN when I have my browser open all day -----when it was SUPPOSED to be stored to save me time. This is the worst Christmas present by far. -------------- On 12/6/06, RWListOwner@aol.com <RWListOwner@aol.com> wrote: > In that vein, now that the new board look is here, when I click on log in I > don't get my username to click on, I have to enter it and the password each > time. > > I wondered why I got a subscriber emailing me today complaining about the > format, I didn't realize the change over had occurred. Good Morning, I am sure that we are all working at trying to figure out the new message boards.....I started last night and finally figured out how to log on with the assistance of others. Thank you. I am writing to ask a question. On one of my boards, when you look at the main view of the board, the author that is listed for a particular post is not showing up properly....What I mean is that the way that the post is listed is not the same as the way the notification reads in regards to the author. It is a bit confusing trying to find the post. Is there a way to alphabetize your message admin lists? My list is all jumbled up now and I am having to search for each board....ie the surname boards are mixed in with the locality boards etc. When I clicked on the notification....it took me to Rootsweb to view the post and not Ancestry. That in and of itself is not a problem, but I can't find the log in on Rootsweb. I think that I am getting old and blind. :) The last question, is there some way to know which posts have been read without going into the specific post? The only way that I can see that a post has been read is when I actually click on the post and view the entries....then the orange dot appears to indicate that a particular post has not been read. I was hoping that we would have more admin tools that would make things easier, but thus far it is a struggle. Hopefully they will be able to fine tune things as we go along. Thank you for your time reading this and for any help you can provide. Jennifer -- "To accomplish great things we must not only act but also dream, not only plan but also believe." - Anatole

I feel the same way:: Maybe time to leave Adminning. Sigh. And oh, WHERE is the ONE thing almost ALL Admins suggested? The box to put "Here's all the dang names I'm searching so I won't stick them in the surname box" AND where is the little blurb we ALL asked for that says "Hey Board User, the surname box is for just the surnames you use in the post" I might have missed these - I have been seemingly short-sighted lately LOLOL Judy On 12/7/06, marilynandmonty <marilynandmonty@cox.net> wrote: > > Nancy, > Then it isn't just me :-( > First of all, I cannot get into manage my boards. Problem 3: How do I see classification, surnames on a post in Admin, Flat View, without going to EDIT FIRST? So far, I see only the classification on posts so I think, "hm, no surnames, gotta fix it." But I click edit and it does have the surnames ALREADY.
