    2. Michael G. McManness
    3. Hi Marilyn, I don't know what is causing the problem. I had the same thing happen within the last week or 10 days with only one objection. Staff took care of the issue and it has not happened again for me. It seemed to be related to the specific message board post because I have not had any problems with other objections. I suspected that it was server related when it was replaced. Sorry I couldn't provide any help. Mike -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Tuesday, January 22, 2008 8:29 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [BAd] Can't View Objection -- Blank White Page Hi Everyone, After having 13 objections in my list that I wasn't able to access for 2 months, I've finally been able to get to them again. HOWEVER, when I clicked on the "Judge Objection" button for 2 of them, the page that opened was blank white. I contacted [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) and someone at staff took care of them, but now there are more new objections as of yesterday that show a blank white page again. This happens whether I use the ancestry or rootsweb interface to manage boards. Does anyone know why this is happening now? Is anyone else having this problem? 3. Thanks for that, Joan. I would never have thought to look there. How very odd... Just to keep you all in touch with things, I have now sent this complaint to "Rootsweb Support" via the Help Desk tab: <start complaint> WHY is a message about problems with the message boards placed at http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/ which is the old, obsolete Help Desk link that is no longer accessed by clicking on the HELP tab on Rootsweb pages? Currently there is a message there that says: 1 Message Boards: 2008-01-18 We have upgraded our message board hardware and everything went well. There are still a few errors that are occuring, one of the features that is not working currently is Request New Board and another is our email notification links. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience while we work to restore these features. Est. downtime: (s) <end quote> Fat lot of use it is doing there, where no-one is going to see it. My fellow admins and I are having difficulties since the boards were moved to the new server, and we need to see that message. (I have reported these problems to [email protected]) Meanwhile, at the new Help Desk page we're told: Announcement 2008-01-18 Due to the holiday on Monday, January 21, we may be a little slow in answering your emails. <end quote> Not as much help to those of us who volunteer to assist Rootsweb as the message that was placed our of our sight! I trust something will be done to ensure that these messages are placed in the appropriate place to keep us informed in future? :-) Wendy Howard <end complaint> As before, I'll let you all know if I get a response to this. :-) Wendy ----- Original Message ----- *From:* [email protected] *To:* [email protected] *Sent:* 01/21/2008 6:04:20 PM +1300 *Subject:* [BAd] My Notifications? > Wendy- > > What is kind of funny about this is that the notice is on the OLD OBSOLETE > HelpDesk page at: http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/ . > > I can't understand why a NOTICE would be posted on a page that no longer is > functional and no longer links from the HELP tab on the RootsWeb masthead. > > There is NO notice on the current Help page at: > http://rootsweb.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/rootsweb.cfg/php/enduser/ask_new.php > > Joan

    3. Associating more than one email address with a RootsWeb account is a BAD idea. It can repeatedly cause problems with a subscription to RootsWeb Review (the email account that was *not* supposed to receive RwR received it and the email account that *was* subscribed did not). It happened in June 2006 and August 2006, both times techs had to fix it. When it happened again in November 2006, RootsWeb claimed it was the users problem. When the user went into her "My Account", the correct address was shown as subscribed. How can that be a user problem??? It was *never* fixed. 3. This is the email I sent to advise of the problems, just for the record: ----- Original Message ----- *From:* Wendy Howard <[email protected]> *To:* [email protected] *Sent:* 01/21/2008 2:38:51 PM +1300 *Subject:* Message board admin problems since move to new server I realised this morning (Monday, NZ time) that I hadn't received a "My Notifications" email since the announcement about the boards being moved to the new server. The last one I received was in the evening of the 17th (containing links to posts dated 15th and 16th). When the announcement was made about the move, I went ahead and worked through the three notification emails that I'd been sitting on because of the problems with the boards. It was then I discovered that the links in the emails didn't work, so I had to work through the posts manually (but had none of the old problems that have been reported on the admin board and list in the recent past). I figured it was a small price to pay for the upgrade, and looked forward to the next emails that had been issued since - but there haven't been any. Also, I can't access My Account today. I posted to the list earlier to see if all of this was "just me", but others have reported not getting the notifications and the links not working in older ones. Is this all linked, and is it a problem known to you that is being worked on? Kind Regards, Wendy Howard Board Admin for 200-odd boards (wendyh651)

    3. I also checked the Board Admins' board before posting this morning, in case there had been discussion there about these issues. There wasn't anything then, but there is a thread about this same thing now. See http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.rw.admin.badmin/5136/mb.ashx if you're interested. Wendy

    3. I did go to the Help Desk before I posted my first message this morning (forgot to mention that in my original post), and there was nothing like that to be seen. And I still don't see that message that you've quoted, Shade. The only one I can see says: Announcement 2008-01-18 Due to the holiday on Monday, January 21, we may be a little slow in answering your emails. That is at the top of the page when I click on Help Desk, between the tabs that appear all over Rootsweb (Home, Searches, Family Trees, etc) and the tabs that are specific to the Help Desk (Ask Rootsweb, Email Rootsweb Support, My Profile). Nothing about the boards not functioning properly in any way. :-( Wendy ----- Original Message ----- *From:* Marilyn Heitz <[email protected]> *To:* [email protected] *Sent:* 01/21/2008 5:20:10 PM +1300 *Subject:* [BAd] My Notifications? > Did anyone go to the Help Desk and read the notification as follows: > "1 Message Boards: 2008-01-18We have upgraded our message board hardware and everything went well. 1. Re: [BAd] Comprehensive Subject Boxes vs Nebulous Boxes
    2. Paul- Subject lines are not very important if a person is SEARCHING the boards but are VERY important for a person who is BROWSING to find posts of interest on a board. Under the current system where you can't really SEE an entire board in an open/expanded view it is possible that fewer users BROWSE to find posts than did in the past. Most probably have to search the boards instead. Joan ------------ Anyone else notice this? Just curious. I haven't, as yet, checked my other boards...but will shortly. 3. Les, That may be, but at least it used to be the case that Ancestry and Rootsweb used the same cookie, so I couldn't be logged into one using one ID and the other using the other ID because they could only handle a single cookie. I can't tell you how many times I was in the process of doing an admin task, then tried to do a search but was unsucessful because Ancestry couldn't see the cookie for that username -- it only found the cookie for the non-paid username. Or how many times I was doing a search, then tried to do an admin task, only to be told I wasn't an admin on that board. That's why I switched everything to my paid ID. That was probably 5 years ago or more. -- Mary On Mon, 21 Jan 2008, Lesley L Shockey wrote: > Mary you can have multiple tabs or multiple windows open in Firefox > with each logged into different Internet sites. Pardon my bold text...it's easier for me to read...I just went through "my" ROTH Boards: 786 Threads 1840 Messages since 1999. I've seen posts about filling out Comprehensive Subject Boxes (C.S.B.s) over the years and have tried to educate the board (and list) posters about the merits of not posting "Roth", or "Looking For Roths", or "Searching for father (mother/sister/brother)" or "HELP!!!" etc...the same for my 4 other boards and lists. Approx. 86 of those 786 threads were "Roth", etc....so I typed out a post asking my ROTH List members to make 2008 and beyond more user-friendly...spread the word about C.S.B.s...told them about the 86 "improper" S.B.s posts and lauded the mertis of C.S.B.s. I had to stop and make my dinner, so I saved the message. Later, I decided to go back to the boards and see how many "proper" C.S.B.s fared with responses...in case some other board poster checked out my findings. You know what? A Major Majority of C.S.B.s had NO RESPONSES !...???? And...several of the I.S.Bs had approx 1 - 5 reponses...one had 10 !??? Anyone else notice this? Just curious.
