I've received my notifications this morning so that's one HOO-RAH. However, filing abuse reports is still failing.... Dan

Hi, I've evidence that a posting I made to a Rootsweb message board has appeared, without my permission, in an Ancestry.it database - is this normal practise, does it confirm to privacy conditions. I've evidence that a posting I made to a Rootsweb message board has appeared, without my permission, in an Ancestry.it database - is this normal practise, does it confirm to privacy conditions. ----------------------------------------- John- A lot would depend on factors you haven't given us. First: the information in your posting--is it original text or is it all just factual data? Data would be in the public domain but original free-flowing text that you penned yourself could be copyrighted by you. Factual material may be copied by anyone (but hopefully attributed to you as the source, if indeed you were the source). Original text should not be. Second: we'd need to know what type of database and WHOSE database in which you found your post. If it is found in a private database and someone else is claiming your copyrighted original content--then you can request that the person remove it. However, if Ancestry is merely mirroring your original content to its co-branded site, the RootsWeb AUP does give the company permission to do that. So....we'd need more information to properly answer your question. Joan **************Start the year off right. Stategy? None but "Let's see what this does." However, boards are not 7th grade science class where good and bad mistakes create one acceptable positive: learning. Of course, 7th graders still receive failing grades if they don't understand the basics of experimenting. Board visitors shouldn't be subjected to all these failings though. Corporate worlds aren't 7th grade science classes. Web users want reliable websites, not experiments. (I'll shut up now. But how I'd love to sit in on a developer's meeting!! haha) Judy On 1/29/08, Chris - Board & List Admin <[email protected]> wrote: > > > HEAR, HEAR > > Couldn't agree more - and there's all the other levels of testing that > should be carried out prior to Beta testing - such as unit testing, > link testing, system testing etc etc. I don't believe that there is a > testing strategy for the board IT development team. > > Chris
It is also interesting that the notice directed us to " the Board Information News posting of 28 January" when the message board is called "Administrator News". Perhaps "please check the Administrator News message board posting for 28 January" would have made it easier for us to find. I searched for 15 minutes and never figured out where the message was. Of course I started with the "FAQs & Help-Related Resources" and only saw the announcement of 22 January. I had begun to wonder if a cookie on my computer was preventing the updated page from opening. Another suggestion: How about Gatewaying Administrator News message board to the Boards-Admins list? That way, we would receive the most recent board postings in a time-efficient manner and relieve Elaine from having to post a message to the list instructing us to check the board for a newly posted message. Another question: How long will it be before additional changes are held off until Beta testing can be carried out to weed out as many "bugs" as possible and improving the possibility of the system's ability to continue to work in a somewhat smooth manner? Elaine - I'll probably get in trouble for this, but what the heck: It's about time. Sure enough, it was there, but in my case it also showed up in the recycle bin. I just deleted it again, and now there are two of "it" in the recycle bin, but as far as I can tell it hasn't shown up on the message board again, but I'll got back and check that again when some time has passed. Beth ---------------------- Beth, Hmm.... that seems to be a little different situation from mine. I didn't get "shadow" posts on posts I deleted -- only on posts that I moved out of a thread but back to the same board. I reported it to [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) as Joan suggested. Marilyn **************Start the year off right. I thought that I was seeing the same thing, but mine turns out to be a person hitting my boards again. A person is hitting many boards, mostly unknown boards with the subject line Vitka - they have hit over 100 and counting. Over 50 were deleted (by Elaine) a couple of hours ago, but they are at it again. Sure enough, it was there, but in my case it also showed up in the recycle bin. ---------- Beth- Actually a moved post showing up with the path indicated in the recycle bin has been NORMAL since the latest round of board changes--I'm not sure THIS is a bug. Joan **************Start the year off right. Easy ways to stay in shape. http://body.aol.com/fitness/winter-exercise?NCID=aolcmp00300000002489
Marilyn- I did know that there were "issues" (a buglet perhaps?) related to moving a message to a new place on the SAME board where it had previously resided. I'd report this to the HelpDesk or write to board staff at: [email protected] providing the details. Joan ------------ I've tried to move a couple posts to stand alone on this same board but each time I have a "shadow" post sitting on the board (showing the moved path) instead of going in the recycle bin. Then I tried the Report Abuse feature to have STAFF remove it and that didn't work either. Has anyone else noticed these "shadow" posts sitting on their board when they moved a post to stand alone on the same board? Marilyn **************Start the year off right. Hello, I'm the Board Admin. for the ANDERSON surname board. I moved this post out of a thread to stand alone on the ANDERSON board: _http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.anderson/11163/mb.ashx_ (http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.anderson/11163/mb.ashx) But a "shadow" post is now showing up on the board page, showing the path: _http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.anderson/11164/mb.ashx_ (http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.anderson/11164/mb.ashx) This post needs to be deleted. I tried to do it, but get an Error 500. Aren't these moved posts (showing the move path) supposed to show up in the Recycle Bin? That's the way it was working before the boards were moved to the new server. They only show up in the recycle bin if the post was moved to a different board.
