I have just such a situation on some of my boards. I check the author by date to see where else he/she has posted. If there are over 2, I make an abuse report on my board to the attention of Staff at messageboards stating that this poster is cross posting (or spamming) and let staff take care of it. I sometimes have a similar problem, and I use IE6. I'll be on a board and get one of those "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and must close" messages. It doesn't seem to be on any particular board. While cleaning up new board posts I got lots of "error retrieving page" messages, although second attempts were successful. After that I started getting either blank pages or only parts of pages, and I finally just gave up for this morning. I'm also using Firefox. Thanks to all who replied on this one. I have come to the conclusion I can do it if it doesn't mess up the thread - but that I should only do so if really necessary ! BTW - I have just volunteered for another board which looks like it may need a little gentle cleaning on subject and surnamne lines etc...... Thanks again Fiona
Fiona, since this hasn't been mentioned: Be careful with moving a message out from the middle of a full thread. You might cut off half the thread IF the rest of it was in answer to the OT message. Switching into thread view might help you decide on which messages are directly (structurally) related, and which are not. If in doubt, I would not touch it. Hi I am still feeling my way as a new admin so I need some advice on a point of principle If there is a thread along the lines of 'looking for the parents of my GGG Grandfather Angus McDOUGAL b Glenduckie, Scotland in 1776' - lots of help and advice offered - all good stuff and pertinent to the discussion of birth records in 17th and 18th Century Scotland.... Then wham - right in the middle of it all -subject line is changed - and the thread veers off at a tangent, and we end up discussing the McDougal family of Vermont USA in the 1960's and then it goes back to the original I don't want to dampen the enthusiasm of anyone, but it doesn't have much to do with the original topic being discussed. Though of course there is a remote chance that there may be a relationship Can I move the post sideways on the board and start a new thread with it so it stands as it's own thread? Thus keeping them both on topic - or is that just not done? Advice needed (by the way these are just extreme made up examples) Thanks Fiona
IF a thread has a CLEAR point where it can be split, yes you could make that section a new thread on the same board. However, let's say the thread has 3 major "parts" A, B, C - -- sometimes you cannot move "B" and have A&C stick together. You have to *very carefully* evaluate whether each move you make will keep each "part" as a whole. Sometimes that is impossible. Just know, you cannot stick 2 distinctive parts back together if the moved middle part is what keeps the other 2 sections attached. First, look at each "indent" and look UP the thread to see what attaches to what. As a new admin, for your very first move, try to ID a section that say has 2 or 3 posts that can be moved without disrupting the rest. **Important** if you mess up, you could end up moving an entire section you never intended to move-- you should be able to "restore" it from the recycle bin (only restore your own mistake though). Now, having said all that... you might want to save yourself all the headache of doing it. Sometimes, threads veer but are related. It happens frequently when a thread starts about "overseas" ancestors. Everyone in the USA dreams of finding that connection to "back there." So, unless the thread gets so unwieldy and confusing, I'd leave the whole thread be-- OR, just move a very small section IF it can be moved easily. Fiona- One rule of thumb is that a reply can remain in the thread regardless of its relevancy to the board provided that the thread started off being relevant to the board. An additional rule of thumb for replies in a thread is that the reply must be relevant to the post it is in response to--in other words if the post is about SMITHs in Canada and the reply says I have SMITHs in California -- that is most likely not related to the original post unless it is referencing the SMITHs mentioned in the post being replied to. If not, the reply can be moved to start a new thread either on the same board (if it is on-topic for the current board) or a different one (if not). Joan ------------------------------ I don't want to dampen the enthusiasm of anyone, but it doesn't have much to do with the original topic being discussed. Has anyone else had this problem. Today I visited the three county webpages. All three load but two are missing the top and bottom graphics. Is this because of the URL change to Ancestry? I understood that nothing except the new URL would change. Loss of graphics is a big change. donkelly -------------- Original message ---------------------- From: [email protected] > > Lou- > > Whatever your problem is it isn't due to the URL change since the BOARDS URL > hasn't been changed as yet--only the WWW RootsWeb server has been changed so > far. > > Joan > > -------------- > Can't I have my subscription username open at ancestry while I have my > rootsweb username > open on the rootsweb interface? Hi Wendy: "Note to Self" is not exactly what the objection que is for. If you left yourself a note asking re appropriateness to that board, it is likely that STAFF acted. STAFF can pretty much decide/know what is or is not appropriate. Objections do not automatically expire. Someone had to act to make it move or remove. I will leave a note "to myself" when the boards are balky and I cannot get edits or moves to take. However, it is not unusual for me to find that STAFF will act on them from time to time. However, some have sat for 4 months as the board molasses was particularly thick in spots and nothing would get the posts to move. Usually, my note will say something to the effect of , "move to xxxsurname board when system will allow." or "cannot edit surname box -- error message received ( and quote it)" The objection que is something that streams to STAFF in a master format.... all objections are viewed. It is not really to be used as a tickler file for us. So.... my recommendation is that when you have a post that you feel need correspond about with a user, use some other method for your tickler file. Excel spreadsheet, perhaps. STAFF will not see that "tickler file" as it does not stream to the area STAFF views as the Objection Que does. Lou- Whatever your problem is it isn't due to the URL change since the BOARDS URL hasn't been changed as yet--only the WWW RootsWeb server has been changed so far. I'm going to the rootsweb interface sign in page here: _https://myaccount.rootsweb.com/signin_ (https://myaccount.rootsweb.com/signin) and sign in with my username and password, but when the next page opens, which is the rootsweb Home Page, my username for my subscription at ancestry shows up. I believe only staff can lock us out of an objection. Nan ----------------- Nan- While that is generally true I think Lynne may have hit on the cause in other cases that I had forgotten to mention...that if one admin gets an objection on their board and acts on the objection by MOVING the post to another board (adminned by a different admin) the objection moves along with the moved message and may show as locked by the other admin. Staff generally goes in and deletes those objections that are still sitting on the moved messages. Joan **************Create a Home Theater Like the Pros. Watch the video on AOL Home.
