    3. I know I'm replying to my own post here, but let me add something else to consider before someone gives any thought to doing this. Keeping in mind that SOME boards are gatewayed (like ALL of mine), if you post what is properly sent only to the poster, then it will also go to the companion list as well, unless you temporarily block the gateway for a few minutes, so you might want to keep this in mind. I don't know if this is feasible (or even advisable) for general use or not, but when I clean a board post and the surname fields are not TOO bad, I simply edit them and leave it at that. If it is really more than just a minor problem, then I post my own reply after my editing is completed and point out the problem. After waiting a minute or two for the system to send my reply to them via e-mail, I then delete my board response. Don't know if this is worth considering by anyone else or not, but it does seem to help "long run" in at least a few cases. Just something to consider. David E. While logged on as administrator on the Ancestry side, open the post and click on the author ID. You'll either get a message saying "This person does not have a public profile because they posted before registration was required," often with their e-mail address displayed, or you'll be taken to an anonymous contact page where you can complete an e-mail form. See "Extra! Extra! New Admin Function" on the Administrator News board at <http://boards.ancestry.com/adminnews/12/mb.ashx> for the full story. Occasionally I post an admin message on a board. I seriously doubt anyone reads them, but it makes me feel better. I only leave the post for a few days and then delete it. Lynne

    3. It doesn't appear to be for a commercial site, but "rhm1001" is hitting a bunch of county and surname boards with the exact same message, nothing connecting it to the board topic. Subject line is "Love Letters from the Civil War." Hasn't hit my boards yet, I noticed it on some gatewayed lists I'm on. The "view posts" count is going up even as I type. Nan

    1. Re: [BAd] contacting posters ?
    2. Kay- There is already a blurb directly on the form that tells them exactly that. If they are not reading it there they are unlikely to read it if you tell them on the board. :( I would not put an admin message ON the board in this case--it isn't going to help. Joan ------------------------------- Did they ever make the posters emails available to the admin. of the boards ? I'd like to contact a person to let them know they should only be putting the surnames that are in the message in the surname box ...however they do not have their email listed and I do not have a subscription to Ancestry ... 2. Tilman- Yes, I believe we both heard from the same person. I'd say like the RWR problem in the past this is a Eudora issue. I believe that problem was resolved when the newsletter was switched to a third party for distribution. Of course, Sharon is free to present the problem to the HelpDesk for them to discuss it with the board developers, but the addresses you listed are not the place she should contact. 1. Re: [BAd] Alerts- broken hyperlinks
    2. Tilman- I had someone write to me with the same complaint and when I looked at their email alert notice it looked as if their email program was inserting spaces and line breaks that translated into equal signs being stuck in the middle of the URL/links. That is really the fault of the email program and not in how the alerts are being sent out. The person who complained to me said it wasn't happening before the last month or so and that something changed--maybe so, but the problem still seems to be in how the recipient's email client handles 2 line links. Joan PS: Maybe we both have the same person complaining about this? ------------------------- Hi, I've tried to find earlier accounts re. this question but came back empty-handed, so let me ask again: A visitor to my boards is complaining about how she receives her alerts: The links for board+messages there are broken, so that the link doesn't work - i.e. the rest of it in line 2 is missing. >From what I recall this is a problem with her ISP's mailserver and/or the email client she uses, not a problem on Rootsweb's or Ancestry's side - right? 2. Barbara- My first question would be--is she also posting this same update to OTHER boards? If she is cross-posting I'd see that her post is posted to the most relevant board and then that the extra copies are deleted. If she posts about multiple counties in the same state then maybe the Unknown County board would be most appropriate. Also--is the website free or commercial? If commercial then all posts need to be deleted. Joan ------------------------------ Someone who has a web site for obituaries posts regularly to my board about updating her site.
