Maureen- It has been this way since 2001 and the reason is that there are too many surnames boards for the "finder" to locate a specific surname. You might write to the feedback address and suggest a blurb be added next to surnames explaining what to type in the box? Joan ----------- Thanks, Joan I guess I've never actually moved a message to a surname board, before. It's always been to a locality--and that has worked fine. I wonder if there might be a way in which to alert an admin to that anomaly, right there on the Move page? I would have never guessed that was the way to do it. Thanks again! When you move a message to a SURNAME board it has never been possible to just use that board finder on the move message page--you have always had to type in the actual surname. That isn't an error message. If you type in: surnames.horton or surnames.cheek and click the button to move the post it should move to the designated board. Joan ------------------------------ The problem is, when I tried to move the message to the HORTON or CHEEK Surname Board, the "move utility" does not work. All I can get is the single word: "surname," in the open box. Repeatedly clicking "Surnames" results in an error message. Is this a known bug right now, with all the moves taking place with Rootsweb? Thanks for any advice or suggestions on how to move this message **************Create a Home Theater Like the Pros. Watch the video on AOL Home. Hi, I don't know what is happening, but I reviewed a message posted to Fairfield County, CT which purportedly links to "Smiths of Fairfield Co. CT and New York" http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.connecticut.counties. fairfield/3992.3/mb.ashx The entire message refers to a HORTON and CHEEK family of supposed Cherokee descent. No mention of SMITH or Fairfield Co., CT. It's a broad net being cast, and based on her comment about HORTON, I suspect she came into the board through a global search for HORTON. The problem is, when I tried to move the message to the HORTON or CHEEK Surname Board, the "move utility" does not work. All I can get is the single word: "surname," in the open box. Repeatedly clicking "Surnames" results in an error message. Is this a known bug right now, with all the moves taking place with Rootsweb? Lou- Anything like this you come across that appears out of line or outmoded can be reported to staff by clicking the email staff link on the boards. Joan ----------------------------- BUT, unfortunately I've come across some pages that need to be updated. Some pages refer to switching from the old GenConnect boards to the "new" board system, (which, I think, is actually referring to the old system that we just left in Dec. 2006). I found URL's that no longer worked, some pages had the text drop off at the bottom of the page and were incomplete (like the text didn't completely transfer from the "Edit" page to the "Info" page), and one had rules for posting that were not in keeping with rootsweb's policies. One board admin. said posts would be deleted if they weren't classified correctly. I don't think we have the right to delete posts for that reason, do we? So......I'd just like to suggest that we all take a look at our Board Info pages to see if any changes, fixes or updates need to be made. My two cents worth, Lou **************Create a Home Theater Like the Pros. Watch the video on AOL Home. (http://home.aol.com/diy/home-improvement-eric-stromer?video=15&ncid=aolhom00030000000001)
Am I the only one or is it a glitch in the works? I have sent message to boardfeedback. Kay ---------------- Kay- Part of the reason you don't get more response to this is that those of us with Ancestry subscriptions don't have the problem so we can't see what is happening for the rest of you. I wish they'd simplify this for all of us like it used to be and place the encrypted address on the EDIT message screen so that ONLY admins could view the actual address instead of going through the connection broker -- where I bet good 90% of the recipients don't respond--mainly because they know we don't have a real address for them and they can get away with not responding. Also, it seems that many ISPs are trashing the connection broker emails as spam. Joan **************Create a Home Theater Like the Pros. Watch the video on AOL Home. It definitely depends on where you click the author's ID, though. This is frustrating, at least to me, because I constantly forget where you have to be to click on the author's ID. I think if you click on the ID from the list of posts, you'll usually get the ad and that you need to actually have one of their posts open and click on their ID from there. I can't say for sure because I'm on automatic pilot when I do this. I do know that I had to read the instructions given on the Admin News board about 100 times before it started to sink in a little bit. ;-) Lynne

I'll have to take a look at my info pages. I don't think a wrong classification is justification for removing a post. If we all did that, we have very few posts! Maybe the admin was just trying to scare posters into using classifications correctly. One can only hope. I rarely look at board information but on the few occasions that I've found that the info isn't in line with board rules I've sent a message to Elaine so that she can follow up with the board's admin. Hello Folks, I've been doing some cleaning on many of my boards this week and every time I move a message I go to that board to see if the message "got there". While I'm there, I click on the "Board Information" page to see who admins. the board and I'm also always on the lookout for new ideas to spruce up my own Board Information pages. Tim: I have noticed that no one has answered your question about the URL that will tell one how to maintain the boards. At the top of any board that you admin. when you are in admin mode ,there is wording that says Admin Information, or something like that. If that fails use this URL http://boards.rootsweb.com/admin/admininfo.aspxit tells everything you need to know.
