No, the number did not change, and the board still appears on the list of adminned boards. The only way I could tell it was gone was by going to the board and seeing the oh-so-lovely pink message "The Requested Board Has Been Deleted." FWIW, it has been restored. Hi Paul, I've seen no explanation so far, just a post from Joan saying she'd reported it and thought others had too. I've contacted the Help Desk about it myself today. It's getting in the way of me administering my boards properly and this thread was started four days ago, so you'd think someone would have heard something by now. Will let you all know if I get a response if no-one else has reported anything similar in the meantime. Kind Regards, Wendy Howard -- Kaiwaka, Northland, New Zealand http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~wendyh65/
Thanks, Wendy It sure is a annoyance. Paul
A couple of weeks ago, I discovered one of my locality boards had been deleted. Staff restored it and David blamed it on "gremlins" and utterly baffled why "the server" was doing this. This morning, the board is gone again. Normally, I don't physically go to each board every day, just the ones that have had new posts. However, I will be checking each of my boards daily. The ongoing errors (move function broken since ?September, search function broken since November, recently the Anonymous poster) are getting ridiculous. Brynne Holland
I just visited my Admin Page and 4 of my 5 Surname Boards are littered with Anonymous Poster posts. Many are long-time susbscribers to the lists and boards I admin...???? you are not alone Joan Asche {:-) If I've missed the explanation can someone give me the URL? Paul Roth
Well, no name no verification....cannot be reached to ask questions. No verification no deleation. He/she may not even be the original author, so no chance......it seems to me. donkelly ----- Original Message ----- From: Tilman Brandl <arbit@gmx.at> To: boards-admins@rootsweb.com Sent: Fri, 13 Mar 2009 18:45:10 +0000 (UTC) Subject: [BAd] (Non)Author wants thread to be deleted .. Checking on each post in the thread and clicking "View Posts" shows each post by a different name (even if it shows "anonymous") so it really is hard to tell! Me either--you might want to refer the request to staff (via the HelpDesk) and note that you realize impersonation IS a reason for removal BUT that you can't tell if that is the case or the problem resulted from the "anonymous" bug. What I forgot to mention, the author (or not) asks for deletion claiming he didn't write this message !?? I can't think of any method that could verify that claim.

Tilman, Just my own opinion, and certainly subject to other opinions from other folks, but if it appears to be a legitimate post then I would not remove it until such a time as the objection can be determined to come from the author of the post. If it is an objectionable or inappropriate post for whatever the reason, then I would remove it without regard to who asked me to do so. I'm not a big fan of not having names on posts, but that is the system we have to work with so there is not much we can do about it. David E. Joan- I know I reported it to the HelpDesk and I believe several others have also. It should be a fixable problem--this happened once before. The poster info IS there -- just hiding on the boards unless you click to view posts--then you can see it. This bug cropped up once before and was fixed at that time. Joan, The post had NOT been made yet. It would be nice if a feature actually WORKED before they rolled it out. This morning I visited a thread that had no Anonymous posters only to find that they are now marked Anonymous. When clicking on 'view posts' I am directed to a page has a user name. Is this a bug or something new? Joan
Hello everyone, Recently posted in Administrative News- (http://boards.rootsweb.com/adminnews/30/mb.ashx) We have received inquiries about optional duties for message board administrators. We would like to give out a reminder on these optional duties and inform administrators that optional duties are not required for anyone to be an administrator on a message board. Here is the list of optional duties: 1. Actively encourage use of the board by creating new on-topic posts or answering existing posts. 2. Assist and educate board members in more effective use of the boards. For example, you could send an e-mail to users notifying them when you move or delete their posts and letting them know why. 3. Edit the classification of each post if necessary. 4. Change surnames entered in the surname field to reflect only those surnames discussed in the post. 5. Review posts on the board for the time period prior to your adoption including: - Correcting classifications and surnames, and creating more descriptive subject lines. - Deleting Community Guidelines violations. - Moving incorrectly posted messages to the proper board. 6. Work with a Mailing List Administrator to gateway your board to a corresponding mailing list. 7. Customize your Board Information box with board-related links and information. 8. Adopt and review boards that do not have an administrator. The main point of controversy recently mentioned by administrators is in regard to #4. Many community members are attempting to help out board admins by submitting these fixes by using the Report Abuse feature. We appreciate the efforts of the community but want to make sure that fellow administrators are not subjecting other administrators to these lengthy lists of fixes. This is not a mandatory action - as such if you choose not to fulfill these requests we ask that you Reject the objections in your queue. Using the Report Abuse feature to report items that need to be "cleaned" up is not an appropriate use of the feature. This feature should be reserved for real reports of abuse. As staff when we receive hundreds of reports for surname fields that need to be fixed this makes it difficult to see actual reports of spam, commercial posts, etc that truly are instances of abuse on the boards. We give our thanks to all of you for giving so freely of your time. Those of you who have been able to fulfill not only the required duties but have gone on to fulfill the optional duties are truly going the second mile! We greatly appreciate the zeal and energy at which our current administrators are keeping the integrity of the community boards. To view required duties and additional information please visit the Message Board Administrator Information page at: http://boards.rootsweb.com/admin/admininfo.aspx Sincerely, RootsWeb Support Staff<http://www.ancestry.com/facts/staff-family-history.ashx>
Now Lou...unless you are up to 162 unmovable posts like I am you probably shouldn't complain. <g> I have close to 130 on USA General alone. the biggest part of the problem is that some of the misplaced posts have turned into lengthy threads by now and may remain unmovable. :( I'd guess that the developers who were spending their time working on the new messaging system are NOT the same developers who work on boards. Development teams work on specific areas. They are not all working on general programming issues. Joan In a message dated 3/12/2009 2:26:38 P.M.
