I would like to see a multiple-choice ballot, so that there is a fairly good likelihood that everyone will find some choice they agree with. E.g., A. Keep the current logo choices with no additional variations B. Keep the current logo design with a variation that adds Hawaii and Alaska C. Allow the new proposed logo designs as variations in addition to the current logo design D. Replace the current logo with the new design, with a grace period for transitioning out the old one It is worth emphasizing that this is NOT proposed as a By-Laws amendment. The By-Laws of an organization are like its constitution; they aren't meant to encompass every decision and policy. By-Laws amendments should only be for issues that either (A) replace or repeal something already in the By-Laws, or (B) we want to make VERY hard to change (as the By-Laws are.) I'm not making an official motion yet, because I'd like to work out the wording unofficially so that we don't have to go through a bunch of formal amendments to the motion. Also, it might be good to precede it with some motions setting up a general plebicite process for (non By-Laws) issues that we want to put before the membership. The process should be easy to participate in, secure, and easy to ignore if you don't want to be bothered by politics, as some CC's don't. Since multiple choice ballots can easily lead to a failure of any choice to get a majority, and we don't want to put people through multiple run-off votes, it would make things easier if the ballot involved ranking your choices. // Teri
Due to a mistake on my part - trying to handle business from the road - Motion 99-27 - Alternate logo fails - 2/3 majority test - 10 needed to pass. 8 yes, 6 no, 1 abstain, 1 absent My sincere apologies to the Board and the membership for the miscount. Tim

>Please cast your vote on the motion by Maggie Zimmerman and seconded by Jim >Powell as amended: > >"I move that The USGenWeb Project adopt the logos as shown on the following >URLs as "alternate" logos: > No. While I like the proposed logos much better than the present one, I do not feel the Board has the authority to authorize new logos, even as alternatives, considering that the current logo was chosen by a project-wide vote of the general membership. My impression of the email feedback was pretty much 50-50 between "yes, it's time for a change" versus "a logo is for keeps, and allowing variations dilutes the image." Given the split, I don't think we have a mandate. I would support an alternative motion to present the proposed logos to the Project membership on a special ballot. // Teri Pettit

As the second on the motion, I approve the change. And I would like to add that the response I have received from the everyday volunteer has been overwhelmingly in support of these "Alternate" logos. Most of the respondents would use the new logo. There were only two "negative" responses, the one that responded to my response, indicated that he had no problem with others using it. He just did not want to change. As I have said before, a couple of respondents had problems with the use of the flag. So I asked quite a few respondents their opinion, most wrote back and said that they thought it was respectfully done and they had no problem with it. No one wrote back that they thought it was disrespectful. One respondent said that they believed that there should be a project wide vote. So I asked some of those that responded if they agreed. The responses boil down to this "if" you get rid of the old one, yes, if this is just an "Alternate" then no. Of course this wasn't scientific, I did not count the number in favor only the small number that were not in favor of the "Alternate" logos. The tone of the positive responses was almost uplifting. There was a feeling of pride that seemed to flow from these responses. Something you should think about though, in these sorts of polls, Negative responses come more easily. It takes much more for someone to take the time to write "I like that" than "I hate that". Therefore I am I very much in favor of this motion, Thanks for listening, Jim
