Now that Teri's motion to restore USGenWeb-ALL-L to Volunteer's Info page has received a second from Joy - the Motion numbered 99-29 is now open for discussion. Tim
I just got a bounce from my previous motion, and noticed that I misspelled the name of list used to distribute The Daily Board Show. I wrote USGW-ALL@listbot.com The correct address is: USGW_ALL@listbot.com Please revise the motion to include the correct list name. Thank you, Teri

Hi, Since Rose knows more about DCGenWeb and it's needs and concerns she would be the best person to name her successor. I don't think we should be involved unless she can't come up with a successor. DC isn't a state, so the whole issue of elections doesn't come up. Organizationally, it is the "nation's county", so to speak. So, I would expect that the AB or NC assumes a role similar to that of state coordinators when a CC resigns - DC goes up for adoption. If Deb Remer doesn't want the job, then I suggest asking her if she would announce the vacancy on the DC email list that she runs. Most county adoptions are handled on a first volunteered, first offered basis. It is rare to have a more extended process. Tends to only happen if two people volunteer for the same county almost simultaneously, and don't want to work as a team. And then the SC usually has free rein to pick whoever they want (procedures may vary from state to state.) Holly also wrote: > I suppose technically, Rose is currently the CC and SC of DC, so > Rose (as CC) can *technically* vote for Deb as SC and then step > aside as a CC with Deb taking over. Might be good to ask Rose if she'd do this for whoever wants the job, as a formality. There are always people who will insist that DCGenWeb should be considered a "state project" under the By-Laws, even though it isn't a state. // Teri
Actually, I don't think there is any need for the board to get involved at all. Rose wants to step down and she has a potential person in mind. I can only see our involvement in this if Rose couldn't find someone. Rose can ask if Deb wants to do it and if she does, that's all there is to it. I suppose technically, Rose is currently the CC and SC of DC, so Rose (as CC) can *technically* vote for Deb as SC and then step aside as a CC with Deb taking over. Hi group, Rose Guertin, coordinator of DCGenWeb, has written me to let us know that she's going to need to step down from that position as of January 1. In subsequent correspondence, she has recommended that Deb Remer, the listowner of the DC mailing list and a frequent contributor of data to DCGenWeb, be considered for the position. I'm not sure whether Rose has contacted Deb, or whether Deb would even want the position, but Rose indicated that she lives in the DC area, and is knowledgeable about the DC area and genealogy. How do we proceed? Since there are no counties involved, there can't be an election in this case. I guess we could also look at it this way - Rose *is* the only DCGenWeb coordinator, and if she voted for someone, they'd win, 1 to zip. :) The last known email address for Deb Remer, according to Rose, is <dremer1015@aol.com>. Shall I contact her to see if she's interested in the position? Shari Handley shari@klondyke.net

You have to remember the school districts that do not upgrade to the latest technology because they have hundreds (or thousands) of computers and have limited resources. When we get too fancy for the average user, we lose them. I have visited a lot of commercial sites doing my Christmas shopping and you would not believe the number of sites with Javascript errors.
I tend to agree with Holly on this with an added comment. This project is about genealogy. If we get on an improvement kick lets attack it from the genealogy angle and not from the bells and whistles department. Many of the folks doing genealogy are retired, view the computer as a tool and are unimpressed with anything more elaborate than plain text to pursue it, myself included. I have worked with computers for the past 31 years in the military and out and have written some code in Pascal and C and RBase. I try to stay abreast of computer developments but believe for genealogy use we should keep it as simple as possible to encompass as large a group of hobbyists and researchers as possible. If a CC desires to dress up their pages with Javascript or whatever, fine, but provide a plain text alternative for grandpa and grandma. Pam does nice work with our "front page". Perhaps she could look at the "Help Pages" and share her thoughts with us for any needed improvements. Javascript and CSS are more and more accessible to our users but there are still many out there that can use them and I am leery of someone pushing them on the CC's. I have no objection to improvement of the htmlhelp pages but clearly accessibility needs to be a major issue. Fellow Board members, This note was forwarded to me by Celia Snyder, former webmaster. I believe that Pam already has a copy of this as current webmaster. - Tim ---------------- Hello; I've been using the "heck" out of the Rootsweb and USGenWeb Project's websites in an effort to trace my family tree; I've used the resources from several different counties and several different states and one thing that I find every page has in common is that I'm yet to find anyone using Javascript and CSS Styles to improve the functionality or the appearance of their pages. This is what prompted me to seek-out your "HTML Help" page (http://www.usgenweb.org/volunteers/htmlhelp.html) that you link from your Volunteer Information page (http://www.usgenweb.org/volunteers/volunteers.html) and to be honest, though the page was relatively current a couple of years ago, it's no wonder the newbies who by and large coordinate your various counties don't use the more modern technologies to more easily accomplish their goals. I am a Web Professional who recently sold an ISP to a larger company, better equipped to take on AOL and Gateway. I designed my first website for Netscape 1.0, back when it was new and since then, I have designed, implemented and consulted on the installation of innumerable websites in several different industries. I realize that someone named C.G. Snyder appears to be the person charged with maintaining your "HTML Help" page, but to be honest, considering the apparent outdatedness of several links, I'd be surprised if there has been any updates in quite some time; Though, I was surprised how few of the links did not lead to live webpages, so I wouldn't take any bets about the last time C. Snyder uploaded a new page. But, nonetheless, I'd like to volunteer to take over the maintenance of your HTML HelpSite... Sincerely; Russell A. Wrenn
I vote yes in this matter. Megan has been and will continue to be an instrumental part of USGenWeb. Pam Reid
