It was brought to my attention that the CC who had submitted suggestions incorrectly referenced USGenWeb. I am resubmitting so the substance becomes the focus. In reviewing the submission I see that there is only one instance where it was incorrectly referenced and that has been corrected. ~ Nancy -----Original Message----- From: board-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:board-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Nancy_J via Sent: Friday, August 21, 2015 9:04 AM To: board@rootsweb.com Subject: [BOARD] Fwd: Potential Agenda Items- The PAGenWeb submission was from one of our members, below are my comments. 1. Address the unnecessary sniping and disrespect on some of the lists. a. there are sniping experts out there and it is what they do. b. Have a monthly "Wall of Shame" list any name that crosses the line as determined by 3 complaints from membership 2. USGenWeb members could web-mentor middle or HS students interested in history/family trees? Create a page and make a public campaign to interest younger folks? How do we pass on our knowledge and websites before we "pass on"? The "campaign" should be prominent on the USGenWeb's front page and posted on Facebook and other social media websites. a. It is the nature of things that most young people are not interested in family history, and I feel that most of us can appreciate the number of times we have said "I wish I would have had more interest and asked more questions of Grandma" b. We could have an "Ask Grandma" slogan, with a reason why you would do that. What Facebook page would you post this to that a teenager is already visiting, how many teenager's visit the USGenWeb home page? c. We certainly could have some kind of link on the USGenWeb home page to a website for those who are doing family history assignments and how to get started and it starts with talking to Grandma. d. Keeping in the forefront - not everyone's parents are genetically related, let alone grandparents. The family structure is not what it was, genealogy is going to evolve. You can't search a Petri dish but you can have DNA tests so you have some sense of heritage. 3. SPECIAL PROJECTS: Why can't Special Projects combine with existing webs, giving one site more content under an experienced webmaster (the Special Projects)? Plus, the Special Projects seem much removed from everything else in the USGenWeb. Why have them, then? a. I really do not know anything about Special Projects b. Hence, maybe we should promote them more amongst ourselves c. Special Project of the moment on the Home page of our State Sites and rotate every few months. 4. ELECTIONS: Why do we have to use a multi-step process to say yea or nay on ONE thing. PLUS in campaigns, there is no central place to get info. Candidates should ALL write 3-5 lines of intro with URL for more info, then, send it as ONE email to ALL lists. Posting it on US failed at least a couple times. Then, we're left to search the internet for candidate pages posted where-ever (like on their own website). a. I personally never had an issue with the elections. b. In government elections you have to go look for candidate information, there is no central repository. c. I thought I saw candidate pages off of our election page. I think these are important and should be discussed: 1. The Bylaws already say the SCs are responsible for periodic checking of web sites. It seems to me that SCs should be held accountable that such is occurring and perhaps inform the NC just what that schedule is. 2. It is my opinion that if the Regional Reps held a minimum of a quarterly roll call it would go a long way towards preventing situation like have occurred in Minnesota and South Carolina where SC's and ASC's dropped off the radar for several years before anything was done. Therefore I would like to see the addition of a Quarterly Roll Call conducted by each Regional SC Rep for the SC's and ASC's in their region. 3. Communication - > It has been shown that communication between the NC/AB and EC with the > membership has not been working as it has been done in the past. The PAGenWeb submission was from one of our members, below are my comments. 1. Address the unnecessary sniping and disrespect on some of the lists. a. there are sniping experts out there and it is what they do. b. Have a monthly "Wall of Shame" list any name that crosses the line as determined by 3 complaints from membership 2. GenWeb members could web-mentor middle or HS students interested in history/family trees? We have been invited to exhibit at the May 2016 NGS Conference in Fort Lauderdale. Please see the email I received below. Since I am changing jobs, I certainly do not have the funds to pay for this great opportunity to celebrate our 20th anniversary. If I did, I would gladly get us registered immediately. How should we go about handling this? Should we ask for donations? Do we know someone who would want to sponsor us for this event? Looking forward to hearing from AB members as well as other project members of The USGenWeb Project. For non-AB members who cannot post to the Board list, please write to me at ncusgenweb@gmail.com. Thank you. I believe the first one is mine. I have brought this up for the past 3 yrs. We are supposed to receive and post, for the record, these reports on Board each quarter. In one state we hear from the state coordinator at every couple of months, she is supportive of ideas, responds to any questions/comments I have quickly and forwards on any national business that the CCs need to hear about as well as anything of interest in that state. The other state is the exact opposite. No response to emails, no roll call, no support, no forwarding of national business, no checking in on how things are going, no local business. With that in mind I would like to see SCs responsible for taking roll call of CCs at least quarterly, that they respond to email fairly quickly (within two weeks for instance?), that they update and take care of the state site (quarterly or more often if there are any changes), that they make it clear which counties are available for adoption with clear instructions on the requirements for adoption and who to contact. I also think it would be a good idea to have a term for all SCs if there is not one already, perhaps two years." Here it is. Sorry for the mix up. I had to jump to another laptop. I had savedit on the new laptop. LOL Here is the list: EC/GC QUARTERLY REPORTS We are supposed to receive quarterly reports from the EC and the GC and post them on Board for the record. I would like to see these two items put on the Agenda for each quarter. I can't remember the last time we received the report from the GC. Does it still have the 1 person appointed to it should a grievance come in? Linda Simpson from membership ====== SC RESPONSIBILITIES There was a blurb about SCs checking sites and CCs updating sites: The Bylaws already say the SCs are responsible for periodic checking of web sites. It seems to me that SCs should be held accountable that such is occurring and perhaps inform the NC just what that schedule is. Tim Stowell ======== What ever happened to using the ALL list for communications from the AB and NC? No more of this forwarding email to every list and for those of us in more than one state, ending up with multiple copies. Forwarded by Les Shockey from membership ======== It is my opinion that if the Regional Reps held a minimum of a quarterly roll call it would go a long way towards preventing situation like have occurred in Minnesota and South Carolina where SC's and ASC's dropped off the radar for several years before anything was done. Therefore I would like to see the addition of a Quarterly Roll Call conducted by each Regional SC Rep for the SC's and ASC's in their region. Would you please place this on the AB Agenda for discussion and vote? Forwarded by Les Shockey from the membership ======== Neither the ALL list, the DISCUSS list, nor the regional lists will reach anywhere near a majority of members. And forwarding by SCs to state lists will always be less than perfect. Why are project wide announcements still not being posted to the National mailing list listserv, as maintained by the Election Committee? Pat Asher ======== PAGenWeb Submission 1. Address the unnecessary sniping and disrespect on some of the lists. 2. GenWeb members could web-mentor middle or HS students interested in history/family trees? Create a page and make a public campaign to interest younger folks? How do we pass on our knowledge and websites before we "pass on"? The "campaign" should be prominent on the USGenWeb's front page and posted on Facebook and other social media websites. 3. SPECIAL PROJECTS: Why can't Special Projects combine with existing webs, giving one site more content under an experienced webmaster (the Special Projects)? Plus, the Special Projects seem much removed from everything else in the USGenWeb. Why have them, then? Nancy, you do not need a page to create a group, however, you do need a Facebook account to create one and be involved, or in some cases even access the page or group. A fan page is pretty limited compared to a group. It is easier for people to find and "Like" while a group, they have to join. Either kind can be set up so people can or cannot post. In groups, you can go farther and set things so only members can post. Tina Vickery has prepared the start of a new site for USGenWeb's facebook presence. I was in the process of contacting the admis for the prior site and I see that they have now posted that they have changed the name of their site. Please take a look at the prior site and let me know what, if anything, they need to remove from their page since they don't appear to be an approved site. I have asked Pauli to take over the new site as an admin at the present time. I believe I will wait until the new board members are seated to determine who else will assist in managing the FB page.
