Hello everyone, For some of you I am a new administrator. I just wanted to say that for the last about a week, Lists2, a server on RootsWeb for most of the lists has been down. As a result, if you sent a message to the list, it didn't get distributed to the list however, it did get into the archives which can be found: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ You can then enter the list name into the search box to see if you have missed anything. To find out at any time if there is a problem you can go to RootsWeb and click on the help link at the top of any RootsWeb page. There is usually an announcement there. In this case, RootsWeb has said that they do NOT expect to lose any data due to the server being down. I just wanted to let you all know that you can now post and search once again for your roots, Lainee List Administrator _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 helps eliminate e-mail viruses. He enlisted July 17, 1861 at the stated age of 20, was captured at the battle of the Wilderness, and died in Andersonville Prison. It appears he was from Dauphin County, the son of Benjamin Blosser, a shoemaker, stood 5' 4" tall, and had brown hair and brown eyes. Other than that, I know nothing.

Dear List members, It is a period of intense political times when emotions and opinions will run high in many directions. The simple issue is that RootsWeb is for genealogical research and not for political discussions. Equivalent political situations have been known to cause significant disturbances and needed intervention by admins and occasionally by staff. RootsWeb asks all admins to reinforce where necessary to their subscribers the basis of the mailing lists and their provision by RootsWeb to users, and, where necessary, take reasonable actions to maintain the focus of mailing lists. RootsWeb cannot and will not be supportive of list administrators who encourage political discussions on mailing lists. I appreciate the fact that no one has posted any political or off-topic messages and that this will remain as such. Please continue with your messages as normal regarding the genealogy research as to the topic of this list! If anyone is researching England and Wales now, or will be in future, this looks very good for us. Lainee ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The University of Leicester's New Opportunities Fund project is creating a digital library of eighteenth, nineteenth, and early twentieth century local and trade directories from England and Wales. Local and Trade Directories from England and Wales Directories of counties and towns can be important sources for local and genealogical studies. They include lists of names, addresses, and occupations of the inhabitants of the counties and towns they describe, and successive editions reflect the changes in the localities over a period of time. You often can find ancestors listed in the trade directories when they may be difficult to locate otherwise. In larger cities, you can often find the address of a tradesman's shop. Assuming that he lived nearby, this information can help you quickly zero in on the appropriate neighborhood in census records that have not been indexed. This new online collection contains images of a large number of directories. The Web site also has a powerful search engine available so that names, occupations, addresses, and other key words or phrases can be located to their exact places on pages within the text. This makes it very easy for you to find names and other information quickly. Your viewable WorldConnect file is a composite of the GEDCOM you upload and the *options* you select on the Set-up Page. These options include your owner information, password, display options (selections) -- what you choose to let the virtual world see -- and download options. Unlike changes you make to the GEDCOM itself, changes in your selected options can be made without uploading a revised file (i.e. leaving the location of GEDCOM box blank). Probably the most common option change involves updating your e-mail address. If you wish to update or revise your WorldConnect options -- but not change the GEDCOM itself, start on the main WorldConnect page: http://wc.rootsweb.com/ Click on: "Also, go here to update or correct your existing Family Tree." Enter the user code and password for your existing GEDCOM (the same ones you used when originally uploading the GEDCOM). If you don't remember your user code and/or password, have them sent to you by e-mail from Password Central: http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ --if you have the same e-mail address or can still receive mail at that address. If your e-mail address has changed and you are not able to retrieve mail at the old one, you will have to contact RootsWeb's HelpDesk for your account information. http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/help.cgi You can choose either the Standard or Advanced Set-up Page in updating your account. However, use the Advanced option if you previously used it, or if you wish to customize items not included on the Standard option. Choose the Advanced option if you submitted or last updated your GEDCOM before there was a choice of Standard and Advanced. CAUTION: If you see a message that says "you are about to create a new GEDCOM account. If this was not what you intended, click the Oops button" -- this means that you have NOT entered the exact user code and password you originally used for your existing account. Make certain you are viewing the Set-up Page for your existing WorldConnect account. Leave the path/location of GEDCOM box on the Set- up page blank. WorldConnect assumes you are going to update the *options* for the existing GEDCOM rather than uploading a new one if this box is left blank. Keep your e-mail address current for your WorldConnect account. This makes it easier for your cousins to find you. If your e-mail address changes and you have not updated it at WorldConnect, you might miss an important connection. Before you leave your old ISP or change your e- mail address, try to remember to record the original user code and password for your account. If you can't remember them, request your account information from Password Central (click on Password tab at http://www.rootsweb.com/ ) while you still can receive mail at your old e-mail address as that is where the information will be sent. However, if you have a sudden change and can't access your old e-mail account, you will need to contact the HelpDesk as indicated above. Other options for your WorldConnect file that you might wish to change or update from time to time include the wording of your Title, Headers and/or Footers; the download options (whether or not you wish to allow visitors to download all or part of your GEDCOM); your password; whether notes and sources are included in your display; whether living family members are cleaned or removed, plus many other options -- items which are not a part of the GEDCOM itself--but which affect how your GEDCOM is handled online by WorldConnect. After completing the options to be changed, scroll down and click on the upload/update button to reprocess the existing GEDCOM. Wait for the message confirming that the current GEDCOM has been reprocessed. To learn about the reprocessing options available on the Advanced Set-up Page (the Advanced Set-up Page is not recommended for first-time submitters), please see: http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/FAQ/wcsubmit4.html The above instructions apply ONLY if you originally uploaded your GEDCOM to RootsWeb's WorldConnect, and not if you submitted your file to Online Family Tree (OFT) or Ancestry World Tree (AWT) at Ancestry.com. To edit your GEDCOM file you must use the tools available at your original upload site following the instructions located here: http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/questions.html#gedcom If you wish to make changes to your actual family tree file that is shown on WorldConnect, you must first update your information in your genealogy program. It cannot be done online. Update your files, create a new GEDCOM file, and then upload the new (revised) file using the same user code you did the previous time. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Permission to reprint articles from RootsWeb Review is granted unless specifically stated otherwise, provided: (1) the reprint is used for non-commercial, educational purposes; and (2) the following notice appears at the end of the article: Previously published in RootsWeb Review: Vol. 6, No. 11, 12 March 2003. _________________________________________________________________ The new MSN 8: smart spam protection and 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail

RETURN TO SENDER: ADDRESS UNKNOWN. Sooner or later you are going to find a promising lead about your ancestors on WorldConnect, a Message Board, Mailing List, or on someone's personal website, so you send a quick e-mail note. And, it bounces. If your message was returned because of a full mailbox, or other temporary reasons, try again in a few days. However, if it bounces because the address is longer valid, then what do you do? First, it does no good to contact the HelpDesk or your editor, because RootsWeb does not maintain a database of users' e-mail addresses, and as much as we'd like to, we can't help you with this problem. Most genealogists leave a trail though, so start looking outside the box. Is there a link to the person's homepage or to their family tree at WorldConnect? Check those carefully because there might be an e-mail address there that is different than the one you have. Do they have a guestbook on their homepage? If so, leave them a note. Where might this person have posted? Message Boards? Mailing Lists? What surnames? What localities? Search through the appropriate archives to see if you can find a more recent address for them. If they are working the same family lines you are, they are probably using the same resources. Where have you left a virtual trail? Post a response to any of their old messages in hopes they will see it. Ask others if they know of an up-to-date address for this "lost" cousin. Where applicable, leave a Post-em Note so this person knows you are searching for them. WHITTLING 'EM DOWN. You can narrow down the number of "hits" when searching the more than 256 million names in the combined WorldConnect/ Ancestry World Tree database by using WorldConnect's Advanced Search options. At this page: http://wc.rootsweb.com/ click on SEARCH ALL DATABASES. Refine a search that yields too many "hits" by including more information -- add a given name, or place of birth, and/or death (using town, county, state, and/or country as your search term). Birth and death place searches support recognition of the two-letter U.S. state postal abbreviations, as well as the state's full name -- KS or Kansas. Birth year and death year are searchable with a drop-down menu with the selections of: exact, plus or minus 1, 2, 5, 10 or 20 years. The latter gives a range to a maximum of 40 years -- 20 years in either direction from the year you are using as your starting point. Also, you may use a wildcard with an exact date search. For example, put 187* in the birth year field to search all years from 1870 through 1879. WorldConnect uses christening dates and/or places automatically if the birth dates and/or places are missing. Burial dates and/or places are substituted in the absence of death dates and/or places. Another option for searches is on the names of the father, mother, and/or spouse. Too many John ANDERSONs to wade through? Add "Gertrude" or "Smith" (his wife's first and/or surname) to narrow it down. Get rid of the LIVING entries by checking the box marked "omit living," which is next to the given-name field. Eliminate matches that contain no data (genealogical information) in the birth, death, and/or marriage place fields -- check the boxes marked "omit blanks." You also can check off the boxes for "Has Descendants," "Has Notes," and/or "Has Sources" to limit "hits" to only those individuals with these fields of information included. However, the more narrow you make the search criteria, the greater the possibility that you might exclude a record of interest because it is not an exact match. You can exclude specific databases (yours or anyone else's) from a search by entering the user code(s) of the database(s) you wish to be excluded in the SKIP DATABASE box. Exclude multiple databases by skipping a single space (no commas or other punctuation) between each user code. Use the UPDATED WITHIN drop-down menu to limit searches to databases that have been uploaded or updated since you last performed a search (the FOREVER selection is used to search all databases). Check back often as new databases are added all the time, and old records are updated daily. Caution: If you constantly use SKIP DATABASE to ignore someone else's database, you might miss an update to their file. MATCHMAKER, MATCHMAKER. When viewing an entry within your own database or someone else's you can access any matching entries in other WorldConnect/Ancestry World Tree databases, by scrolling way down the page, and clicking on "search WorldConnect." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~` Permission to reprint articles from RootsWeb Review is granted unless specifically stated otherwise, provided: (1) the reprint is used for non-commercial, educational purposes; and (2) the following notice appears at the end of the article: Previously published in RootsWeb Review: Vol. 6, No. 10, 5 March 2003. _________________________________________________________________ Add photos to your messages with MSN 8.
