I thought it would be nice to have a family reunion this year on list. Bring your brickwalls and family trees, all are welcome! For food you will bring your favorite covered dish and drinks. To post, put the research line of interest and years in the subject line so that those not interested in that particular line don't have to open and read. RSVP to the list by the 4th of July. Hiya everyone, If you have any favorite hints, tips, methods or ideas that you think might help others, share them. These could range anywhere from something you have learned through trial and error to an idea of something you have thought of but have never been able to put to the test yourself because you don't have the tools in your grasp that maybe someone else could actually make work. For me, I was constantly making notes on my copies of stuff I was getting, so I started making 10 copies of everything I got. The original (not necessarily a true original, but YOUR original) was then put up in a folder and the copies were used for notes. I know that most of you have something that works for you, and maybe you thought it would be offtopic for the list...well now you can send it. I have her marriage certificate to Edward William WALKER on March 27, 1881 at the Trinity Church in the Parish of St. Mary, Newington, Surrey. She was living in Swan Street. According to the 1881 Census she then lived at 113 Southwark Bridge Road. She was 27 years of age. In the 1891 Census she had become widowed, her husband dying at 32 Sutton Street, York Road, Lambeth in 1889. She had four children, George, Edward, Alice and Louisa. According to this Census Matilda was born in Bermondsey. She was 35 years of age. Her father's name was John ALGER and he was a journeyman bricklayer. I just haven't been able to make any further progress and quite frankly don't really know what else I can do but I am ever hopeful which is why I want to know if there is a website for ALGERS in England. Hiya everyone, We have been informed that the lists are back up and fully operational. After the lists2 server was broken last week, when they finally got it up and running some of the digests were broken. RootsWeb then took lists2 server down voluntarily a few days ago to fix this problem. Barring any unforeseen difficulties we can all get back to posting. If you posted anything in the last couple days and you don't see it come through the list by Sunday or Monday then please repost. This might be of interest to anyone researching in Florida... Lainee List Admin The following article is from Eastmans Online Genealogy Newsletter and is copyright 2003 by Richard W. Eastman. It is re-published here with the permission of the author. Information about the newsletter is available at http://www.RootsForum.com. Update: Florida State Library Plan Sometimes we do hear good news. It is still a bit tentative, but Governor Jeb Bush's plan to transfer the State Library's circulating collection of 350,000 books and periodicals from the R.A. Gray Building in Tallahassee to Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale may have hit an obstacle: the Florida State Senate's proposed budget doesn't provide any money to fund the plan. For background, read my earlier articles about Governor Bush's proposal at http://www.rootsforum.com/archives/news0305.htm, http://www.rootsforum.com/archives/news0307.htm, http://www.rootsforum.com/archives/news0308.htm and at http://www.rootsforum.com/archives/news0309.htm. Governor Bush's new budget proposal announced in February included the dismantling of the State library. The Governor proposed to pay $5 million to privately-owned Nova University through the next four years to move and maintain the collection and provide for an extension beyond 2007. Such a move, Bush claimed, would save the state $10.2 million during the next four years. Many groups, including genealogy societies, quickly pointed out that the figures were suspect. Serious legal questions also arise when the governor proposes moving state-owned property to a private corporation. Bush and Secretary of State Glenda Hood have described the circulating collection as being similar to any library's collection of books. After all, they have said, this is not the Florida Collection of priceless historical documents, which are to remain in Tallahassee. Nevertheless, it is still a state resource which should not be dismantled; say many other politicians and private citizens. To be sure, the bill in the Senate is not a final decision. The Senate proposal does not include the funds but the House's proposal earmarks $2 million for the transfer, still far less than what Governor Bush asked for. All of these are proposals and could change before the legislation gets passed. Stay tuned _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 helps eliminate e-mail viruses. This is for any of you researching in Massachusetts or if you KNOW anyone that is researching in Massachusetts. Lainee The following article is from Eastmans Online Genealogy Newsletter and is copyright 2003 by Richard W. Eastman. It is re-published here with the permission of the author. Information about the newsletter is available at http://www.RootsForum.com. Massachusetts Doubles Vital Records Fees The Massachusetts Registry of Vital Records and Statistics is doubling its fees on April 1, 2003. Individuals performing their own research at the Registry will now be subject to a fee of $6 per hour, double that of the previous fee of $3 an hour. The cost of a birth, marriage, or death certificate ordered in person has also doubled: $12 per certificate instead of $6. The cost of a birth, marriage, or death certificate ordered by mail will now be $22 per certificate -- again, a doubling of fees. The Registry's records include birth, marriage, and death records that occurred in Massachusetts from 1911 to the present day. Records for events that occurred from 18411910 are available at the Massachusetts State Archives, which has a separate fee structure. The new fees of the Massachusetts Registry of Vital Records and Statistics may be seen at: http://www.state.ma.us/dph/bhsre/rvr/FeeIncrease.htm. In a related development, the Massachusetts Genealogical Council requests the support of all Massachusetts records researchers: the Massachusetts Legislature Joint Committee On Government Regulations has scheduled public hearings concerning proposed Vital Records bills for Thursday, April 3, 2003 at 9:30 A.M. in Room A-1 WHERE???. Call (617) 722-2120 for hearing schedule confirmation and directions. Several proposed bills would close Massachusetts vital records. Since I obviously haven't made this clear enough, I will try again! :) You will address an email to the list, subject line will be ***DINNER PARTY*** ancestors name. Then in the body of the email you will put which ancestor you would wish to have dinner with, and what you would like to ask them. The meal under preparation was just a lighthearted attempt to have fun with everyone. The choice of seating arrangements the same. There is NO real DINNER PARTY, it is using your imagination to get your brick wall out there. The RSVP was an attempt to get everyone writing to the list. This is similiar to having a roll call with a bit of a twist. ~~~~~~~~~ For instance, IF this was on my surname list Elaine "DENTON" I would send in: subject line: ***DINNER PARTY*** William DENTON born c. 1801 Body of email: I would invite my great greatgrandfather, William DENTON. I would like to ask him the following questions: 1. Who are your parents? 2. What is your wife, Sarah's, maiden name? 3. Why did you move your whole family to Missouri from Tennessee in the late 1840's? 4. Where are you and Sarah buried? ~~~~~~~~~ You want to get as much info into your questions as possible to hopefully break through your brick wall. This is just a sample...you want to make it pertinant to this list. And REMEMBER, this is all in fun, Thanks, Lainee List Admin _________________________________________________________________
(this goes out to ALL of my lists) Hiya everyone, With the recent state of servers at RootsWeb and all of us being out of touch for the last week or so, I thought it would be a nice idea to have a dinner party. We have had some new subscribers over the last week that are now finally able to post, so even the lists that had a dinner party a couple weeks ago are getting a second one. :) You can invite ONE or TWO guests of your choosing. ***PLEASE RSVP with the same subject line and the guest(s) you will be bring in the subject line also. Then list who you are bringing and what your questions will be to them. The menu will be chicken (fried and baked), roast beef, ham, potatoes au gratin, mashed potatoes (taters to us from the southern US), garden peas, fresh green beans, and corn. Dessert will be apple pie (freshly baked of course), ice cream (all flavors) and cake. Dinner will be served buffet style so that you can either sit at the big table in the dining hall or you can wander out into the lovely garden to sit picnic style on the fragrant chamomile grass among the blooming flowers under a nice shade tree. Have fun and don't forget your RSVP, Lainee List Administrator _________________________________________________________________
Hello everyone, For some of you I am a new administrator. I just wanted to say that for the last about a week, Lists2, a server on RootsWeb for most of the lists has been down. As a result, if you sent a message to the list, it didn't get distributed to the list however, it did get into the archives which can be found: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ You can then enter the list name into the search box to see if you have missed anything. To find out at any time if there is a problem you can go to RootsWeb and click on the help link at the top of any RootsWeb page. There is usually an announcement there. In this case, RootsWeb has said that they do NOT expect to lose any data due to the server being down. I just wanted to let you all know that you can now post and search once again for your roots, Lainee List Administrator
