    1. Blaxalls as Sugar merchants?
    2. Have come across a database on the internet, listing Sugar Refiners & Sugarbakers - http://www.mawer.clara.net/sugarbb.html There is a Blaxall listed although no first name: - Blaxall, Son & Co (merchants), 45, Great Ormond Street, London. Source was detailed as the 1890, Post Office Directory. Any ideas who this may have been? Tara

    3. Hi Tara, I've found one of my notebooks and am transcribing info for you & Sam, but it's taking longer than I expected. Meanwhile, this query of yours sounds like Lewin Jeremiah BLAXALL. According to the 1881 Census he was 57, unmarried, listed as a grocer at 25 (NOT 45 ! ) New Ormond St (NOT Great ! ) with a manager, 3 assistants, a housekeeper & a house maid - all living-in. The Census shows no house numbers above 25, but at No 23 is a Home for 30 infirm ladies plus 9 staff & at No 22 is the Lady Superintendent plus 21 staff - so they were big houses. Now we need to be careful with street names and numbers as one of the first actions of the newly formed London County Council ( LCC ) in conjunction with the Post Office from 1888 onwards was not only to get rid of duplicated street names throughout the LCC area by wholesale re-naming, but also re-numbering ALL streets such that the lowest number was closest to the nearest Postal Delivery Office. Thus 25 New Ormond Street in 1881 could well have become 45 Great Ormond Street by 1890 !! Thanks for solving a problem for me as I couldn't find any trace of New Ormond St on any maps and I assumed it had disappeared under re-development but I can't believe Lewin Jeremiah would have relocated lock, stock & barrel from New Ormond St to Great Ormond Street so I can confidently believe that it was a street re-naming ! As to the business name Blaxall, Son & Company, the "Son" bit *cannot* be Lewin Jeremiah's son as he was unmarried so I guess his Dad ( Also Lewin Jeremiah ) put up some capital for the business so he was the "Blaxall" and Lewin Jeremiah junior was the "Son". Amazing what one can string together from "snippets" !! Thanks !
