Melungeons were an Appalchian Mountain culture of people that formed because of being social outcasts because of being multi-racial. It is theorized that the first Melungeon people were tri-racial (being mainly of Mediterranean/Portugese descent) but then intermarried with the locals until they "passed" for white. If you have stories of having Native American in your background that you have been unable to prove, it's likely you could find some connections here.
