    3. Reuben Blankenship of Coosa County, Al was my 4 greats grandfather. He was born in 1763 in Virginia and died October 27, 1850 and is buried in Poplar Springs Cemetery in Coosa County. I have copies of his Probate Record and his Revolutionary War Record taken when he applied for a pension which was granted. A few years ago a Revolutionary War Monument was placed on his grave. His wife Elizabeth was born in 1760 and died in 1853 in Coosa County, being blind at her death. They had nine children whose descendants make up a large part of the Blankenships in Central Alabama. His brother Daniel also was a Revolutionary War veteran who was born in February, 1761 in Virginia and died in Coosa County, Alabama June 29, 1849. I also have copies of his Probate Record and war record taken when he applied for a pension which was granted. Most of the other Blankenships in Central Alabama are descended from him. I wouild be happy to share other information about these two early settlers in Central Alabama. By the way, the log cabin built in 1847 by his Grandson and my gr gr grandfather William Henry Blankenship is still standing and my gr grandfather, my grandfather, and my mother were all born there. It's a grand feeling to be in it and know that Reuben and Daniel had once been there. If the walls could talk, what stories they could tell. 3. Reuben an Elizabeth are buried at the Site of the OLD Poplar Springs church, which is now on private property. It is just off US 231 on a hill top. There are No Markers or tomb stones at the real location for them. My source reference is the Coosa County Cemetery Book and direct communications with the lady who had lots to do with getting the RWS marker placed at the NOW Poplar Springs Cemetery. However I have not been able to obtain any document that indicates they are in fact buried here other than stated above. I have and continue to work to locate and photo all the Blankenship burial sites in Coosa County and find proof of the burials of those that are not marked. I am a descendant of Reuben through his son John Buck, James Thomas, John Allen and James Russell. I'll be glad to exchange data with Blankenship descendants interested in this line. 3. Andy, My sister and I hope to visit Coosa Co this summer. Where is the cabin located as we definately want to visit that. I am sure that is a wonderful feeling to be able to visit there and know they lived there for a part of their lives. I feel the same when I pull them up on the census record and in someones handwriting see their names, ages, children, occupation, etc. knowing that they told this person all of this info, who wrote it down, and now I am looking at it. It makes them seem closer. Is that stupid or what. Ha. glad to know someone else gets that way when around any thing from our family's past. I was in awe when I went to Missionary Ridge and tried to walk up it on a beautiful sunny day with no one firing at me. I could imagine the horror that Reuben Buck and Wm. Henry went thru that day. I guess they were lucky they were captured and not killed. 3. Andy, I forgot to tell you that while Reuben B. survived Rock Island, Ill William H. did not survive Chicago and I am so sorry about that. He left a lot of children and a wife who needed him. I have thought about that a lot and to me this is proof that this war wasn't necessarily about slavery as others want to believe, but about a way of life for the south and they feared oppression by the north and as it turned out after in the years immediately following, their fears were justified. I just finished reading, Mountains on Fire, about Chattanooga/Chickamauga. This important battle that allowed the north to gain access to the south was not won by any military superiority, but rather by the ineptness or poor judgement of some generals and shrewness of other generals. Read this book if you haven't. It is interesting. 3. Hi Bob Blankenship of Tacoma, I was there a year ago and the battle field and Lookout Mt and went to Old Stone Church (Chickamauga Presbyterian Church) where one of my Cotter kin was a minister and his father a founder of that area and is buried with his family there. My great grandmothers brother was a minister to Union and Confederates dying at the church that had become a hospital. You can still see the stains of the blood on the plank floors. The monument at the battle grounds is so over whelming to think of men fighting in such a battle. Southern stop, Sherman there for several Months and one of my Confederate Great grandfathers was in those battles. as part of The Arkansas groups. 3. Andy: My tie in to your family is thatReuben's brother Hezekiah was the progenetor of a large group of Blankenships in the Tennessee Valley, mainly Morgan, Limestone and Marshall Counties. Apparently these brothers came from Campbell Co., Va thru Ga to Alabama. Since Hezekiah was born around 1770-1780 he was too young for the Revolutionary War. Their Father Hudson was a Tory so no SAR Connection there for me. My Great Grandmother was a Blankenship so I am alittle more removed from the family than are you. Since I am active in transcribing Censuses, especially Alabama, I report on every Blankenship prior to 1850 that I find.
