Hi Irma Roy and Don, I am an AL Blankinship, but my line has been living in TX since 1858 when my ggrandfather John W. Blankinship moved from Wilcox Co , AL to Nacogdoches Co, TX with his wife Eliza Miller. He served in the Civil War in the 29th Texas Cavalry. My father, John Oscar Blankenship served with the 90th Infantry Division in France & Germany in WWI and I have served in the US Merchant Marines, US Air Force, US Navy, US Army and US Marine Corps and have participated in WWII (Invasion of Okinawa), China Civil War (Tientsin), Korean War, Viet Nam war and the Cuban Army of Liberation. I am now a retired US Navy Captain and at one time was the Bn Surgeon for 1st Bn, 23rd Marines, USMCR in Houston, TX. I also served on active duty as the Division Surgeon, 3rd Marine Division, and Force Surgeon, Third Marine Amphibious (Expeditionary) Force. Also served as Force Medical Officer, Commander Submarine Force, US Atlantic Fleet. I am also a Submarine and Diving Medical Officer, a Flight Surgeon, Military Parachutist, commercial pilot, etc. In other words I am interested in AL Blankinships that have served in the military. Please keep me informed. Thanks, Sincerely, Bill Blankenship BILLY J. BLANKENSHIP, DDS, MD Captain, Medical Corps, U.S. Navy (Ret) 13810 Suntan Ave. Corpus Christi, Texas 78418 bjblanks@aol.com
Bill; When we corresponded sevaral years ago, I don't think I sent you info on My Blankenships who were in Military. Thearon A. Blankenship was a S1c on USS Arizonia. he was A descendant of Hezekiah as follows: Hezekiah, son of Hudson. Married Miss Potter Daughter of Augustine Potter. Their son Joshua married Sarah Ann Pate 1819 in Morgan Co., Al.. Their son Thomas married Celia Tarver 11/8/1852 Morgan Co., Al, Son Matthew Thomas Married Harriett G. Pitts 1880 Morgan Co.Son William Matthew Married Leona Josephine Chaney 3/19/1903. Thearon was born in Morgan Co 3/20/1920. Another brother William Chester, possibly a twin was killed 8/20/1944 as a Pvt in Belgium. I am sure that there are many others, but the other Blankenship family who gave 2 sons were the sons of Augustine who died ca 1841. He left 3 sons, Hezekiah, William Harvet and Nehemiah. Hezekiah entered Confederate service in 1861 he was captured at the battle of Parkers Crossroads. We was went to Camp Douglas, Ill and eventually signed an oath of Allegiance. Returning home to Morgan Co he was hung under uncertain circumstances on August 20, 1864. He was left hanging in a tree far from any road and was not discovered for several days. William Harvey and Nehemiah joined and served together. Their original unit was Co R 40th Tenn Infantry. Both were captured at Island # 10 in the mississippi and were exchanged within a few mnths. When tey returned to service it was in Co I, 54th Ala Infantry. William Harvey took a minnie Ball through the mouth at Resacca and Nehemiah was apparently killed in the Atlanta Campaign. His last muster document is the winter before, but many records of the 54th were lost. Wm. Harvey lived in Morgan Co until 1913 leaving 10 children. I descend from Ada, the No 2 child of the second marriage. Personally I was in the Navy retiring from 24-1/2 years reserve and active time as a Supply Corps Commander. My Brother Riack was also in the Navy during vietnam, as was I and left active duty as a EN2. I have 2 nephews who were active during Desert Storm. Also one of my Daughters was in Saudi. One of the two nephews is a career Soldier. he presently is an instructor at NCO school at Ft Sill, with orders to Germany in the sprig. He is an E-7 Missile tech.
