    1. Re: [BLANKENSHIP] Reuben Blankenship of Alabama
    2. Well Andy - You could send it all to me and I'll organize it for you and send it back neatly boxed ??? Oh yeah - AFTER I've copied all the Blankenship docs for The Blankenship Collection LOL ... Seriously, I know the feeling. Here's how I have mine - I use colored folders, red, blue, green, yellow, orange and purple, for each family surname. RED - military records GREEN - land records BLUE - birth records and death records and newspaper obits YELLOW - probate or other litigation records PURPLE - marriage records ORANGE - census records I also have several manila folders for each surname for emails and photographs or other misc. For instance, for BLANKENSHIP I have: Misc Blankenship Documents - newspaper clippings, etc Photographs 1700s 1800s 1900s ALABAMA MISSOURI NORTHERN BLANKENSHIPS WEST VIRGINIA BLANKENSHIPS As I find a subject I might need a separate folder for I make it. The colored folders make filing those todbits away - it's keeping up with the filing that isn't always easy as I'll often print out 500 pages a week - I have to FORCE myself into getting them filed. Then I pull out a folder when I can and go through it entering any information as need be. I have a LOT of BLANKENSHIP records especially who reference people not in my database (yet) and so I have made a "book" in my Family Tree Program for these records - for instance, a "chapter" for Blankenship Obits ... Once I have entered the information into my FTM program, I dump the paper. A lot of time I'll just draw a line diagonally across it and put it in my recycle box and use the backs for printing out other emails - just make sure you mark what's been entered. This method sort of developed over the last several years as I've worked on the Blankenship Collection - of course, I NEVER throw away pictures, copies of military, land, litigation, birth, Bible, death, records etc. Those stay in their little colored files - for now anyhow ... Hope this helps and gives you at least an idea of how to get organized. Kay

I have more commonly seen that Ralph had the 6 children and no evidence that RICHARD BLANKENSHIP was Ralph's brother. Ralph wrote: " ... The progenitor of the family in America was Ralph who seems to have come to Virginia about 1700, married Martha and became a "planter" in what is now Chesterfield County. He died young (1714), leaving three children, Ralph, John and James. A fourth is mentioned, but he may have been the son of one Richard, brother of Ralph, who took part in the settlement of Ralph's estate, but is nowhere else mentioned. It may have been this Richard who went to Plymouth colony, married Ann and had a son James, who became the founder of the Yankee branch. Martha, wife of this first Ralph Blankenship, married a second time one Edward Stanley, a widower, and twelve years after the death of Ralph was once again left a widow with considerable landed property, for the four sons mentioned inherited not less than 850 acres on her demise. About half these lands were located on Coldwater Run and the rest farther south on Winterpok creek in Chesterfield county. He was also a large planter and bequeathed on his death in 1748, plantations to his ______ Drury, Joel, and Fore, and _____ter Ann. The fourth ____ son of Ralph, the progenitor, was William, who had a large plantation on Winterpook creek, and married Mary, dying in 1745. Of this union were Ralph, wilmoth, Mary and Frances, who appear to have inherited some 800 acres on Winterpook creek in Chesterfield county... Isham (or Isum), son of John, son of Ralph the progenitor, married Sarah and following his brother, Hudson, moved from the old home in Chesterfield county to Bedford county at the close of the French and Indian war (1764) ..."

    2. Andy Lanier
    3. Help!!!! Can anyone tell me how to organize all my files so I can put my hands on documents when I want them? I'll probably get messages telling me that it's impossible. I started this many years ago and just a year ago I got my first computer and still have lots of stuff that hasnn't been recorded in the computer. Please bear with me and I'll try to get the stuff out when I find it. You've heard the story of not being able to open the closet door without everything falling out, well, it actually happened to me. In addition I took a sabbatical from genealogy for several years and everything that came in was just stuck in the first available space and there was also a move to another house during that time. Maybe if I live to be a hundred I'll get it organized. One interesting tid bit about Reuben Blankenship. While living in Shelby Co. AL, he was approved for a Revolutionary War pension on 24 May 1833 for the grand amount of $23. 31 per year for service as a Private in the Virginia Militia. While this seems like a pittance, I have receipts from family members in the mid 1800's and a pair of overalls could be purchased for 15 cents so I imagine the pension was a great help to them. Another interesting item that was almost always listed at the end of their purchases was a gallon or two of corn whiskey. When I start looking for these receipts and other documents I sometimes feel that I've been sampling some of this whiskey. On the other hand, maybe if I did have a sample, I'd be better able to sort things out. I know a lot of you think I have been sampling it when I get started on one of my messages that seems to run on and on. Just be thankful you aren't having to listen to me talk as that's much worse. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!! Andy Lanier

    3. Catherine, Andy and I were talking about the log cabin where Wm. Henry lived in Ala and I was referring to the house where his brother, my gggrandfather, Reuben Buck, raised his third family here in Polk County, TX. That house was lived in by Reuber, Mattie, and kids until their death, then my ggrandfather, John Henry, Mary Eliz and kids, my grandfather Wm. Arthur, and then his younger brother, Bennie Samuel until Uncle Ben passed away in 1989. Then a nephew bought it, moved it away and built a house on the land. Now he is very ill and his 2nd wife will inherit. The other house was sold, moved down the road and strangers live in it currently. That happened in 1990. I still go out to the land however, since it is only a couple of miles from the cemetary where most of them are buried.
