Since several people have asked about the children of Reuben Blankenship, son of Hudson I thought I'd just submit this to the mail list. All this discussion made me dig into my files and I found the Probate Record of Reuben from the Coosa County, Al Courthouse. In the final dispersal of funds dated 8 February 1858 the heirs were listed as follows: ....said decedant left the following heirs, viz. Henry Blankenship, heirs of Miles G. Blankenship, dead, Mary Doss wife of William Doss, Susan Coleburn wife of John Coleburn, Edith Robeson widow of Thos. Robeson, James Blankenship, Mark Blankenship, heirs of John Blankenship, and Rhoda Brewer wife of Silas Brewer. All of whom are entitled to share said sum of Eight dollars and Sixty nine cents equally. As a result of this, each of the nine heirs received 96 1/2 cents. While digging I also found the marriage license of William Henry Blankenship, son of John listed above and my gr gr grandfather, and Sarah Ellen Roberts dated 3 February 1845. For some reason I had stuck it in Reuben's probate record. Now if I can just remember where I re-file all this. Someone had a Polly listed as a daughter of Reuben. It seems that I have seen this myself before but if she was his daughter, she must have died early without marrying. > > In a message dated 2/7/03 4:28:21 PM, Janet@eastex.net writes: > > << Reuben Blankenship of Coosa County, Al was > > born in 1763 in Virginia and died October 27, 1850 and is buried in Poplar > > Springs Cemetery in Coosa County. Andy, the computer filing....Kay's idea is good for hard copies.....I make a file in my documents under the name like: Lewis J....then put all my data in this file Pictures..same thing with family surnames jokes....good ones only military.....etc. You can also use generation numbers if that is easier for each file. In my documents.....right click to create new folder. Every month or so..BACK UP BACK UP BACK UP. Then I take the disc to work, in case my house burns down or theft. :o( TT ----- Original Message ----- From: Andy Lanier Sent: Saturday, February 08, 2003 12:03 PM To: BLANKENSHIP-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [BLANKENSHIP] Reuben Blankenship of Alabama Help!!!! AL, he was approved for a Revolutionary War pension on 24 May 1833 for the grand amount of $23. 31 per year for service as a Private in the Virginia Militia. While this seems like a pittance, I have receipts from family members in the mid 1800's and a pair of overalls could be purchased for 15 cents so I imagine the pension was a great help to them. Another interesting item that was almost always listed at the end of their purchases was a gallon or two of corn whiskey. When I start looking for these receipts and other documents I sometimes feel that I've been sampling some of this whiskey. On the other hand, maybe if I did have a sample, I'd be better able to sort things out. Samuel was the oldest son of Joel Blankenship and Mary "Polly" Hardy. Joel was the son of Hezekiah Blankenship and Rhoda Meador. Hezekiah left Franklin Co., VA early in the 19th century and, along with his brother, Barnett, was the ancestor of many thousands of Blankenship descendants in the Macon Co., TN/Allen Co.,KY area.
