This is an interesting original Missouir document for immediately after the Civil War. If there's a G. W. Blankenship in your family in Missouri during this period you might want to check this one out. Cousin Mike http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=412938924 Missouri Militia. Certificate of Enrollment. Alton, MO, June 29, 1867. Partly printed form, filled in. Missouri Civil War material is scarce and reconstruction material is downright rare. Oregon County MO is a southern border county and the state militia was active there in quelling dissident pro-Confederates after the war. Enrolling G. W. Blankenship, age 28, 5' 4", fair complexion, blue eyes, married farmer by John Alley, Lt. and enrolling officer. Very scarce county from a very scarce state for this type material. Possibly unique. Worn condition with severe folds, creases and chips to paper, all there and presentable. Shipping priority mail/delivery confirmation in hard protective sleeve is only $3.55 anywhere in the United States.
This item is up for auction on e-bay. Would be a fascinating article to have if you're in the Spencer Blankenship family in IL in the 1850s. Cousin Mike http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=410106180 Franklin Pierce Land Grant Document This is a partly written land grant from the presidency of Franklin Pierce, secretarial signed. It is dated April 15, 1853. This document shows that Amos Barnes, a Private Captain Courtnay's Company forty second Regiment Maryland Militia War 1812 returned 40 acres to the General Land Officer whereas the Surveyor General, Spencer Blankenship and his heirs, were then granted the 40 acres in Bandalia(sp), Illinois. This does have the seal still intact and all of the appropriate signatures. The document is in excellent condition. There are creases where it was folded and has some foxing due to age.
Thanks Pat, but my Calvin was born abt 1820-25. His first child wab born 1844-45, so unfortunately its not a connection :( Misty
Thanks Regina, I will do that! Thanks to all of you who have been very gracious to give me ideas as to where to look for further research. I have just started my research this summer, so I am VERY new to this. I appreciate all of the idea's I have gotten! Misty
Sorry, Kathy..That is a mistake..it is Mack Daniel Blankenship. That's why I asked Kay where she got that from..it's all wrong. Good Luck! Hi Misty I started to reply once before this, but my Calvin doesn't seem to fit your criteria. Here is what I have. 171/171 James Blankenship 52 m NC Mary " 46 f NC Susann " 26 f " Hampton " 17 m " Mary " 15 f " Bryson " 13 m " Elbert " 12 m " Milley " 7 f Tenn. Albert " 2 m " William Smith 19 m " Bryson, 13 m in above list, first name is Calvin, b. abt 1847. This census is 1860 of Polk co. Tenn. Benton Twp., on page 375. date was 8 June 1860. James Blankenship is also listed in an 1850 census in Rutherford Co. N.C. I believe. Let me know if this is your connection. Thanks Pat in Idaho
Sue, Thanks for the information. Bill Nelson
Jerry, My great grandmother Sarah Frances Greear Isaacs would have been a neice of Elizabeth's, the only thing I have is just her name if in fact it is the same Elizabeth who is the daughter of Wm. Greer, Jr. Bill Nelson My Surnames: Nelson, Isaacs, Greear, Wilson, Black, Bugg, Blankenship, Trump
I have one McDaniel - Elvie V McDaniel b.1913 d. 1994 married my aunt, a Langston. He was born in OH but lived most of his life in CA. regina
Another place I got info was to go to the rootsweb list archives and do a search in each of the last 5 years for each list that might have info. You can search for a name and it will give you any messages that mentioned that name. Like for 200, 199, etc. I think they go back 5 years. I had to give a user name and make up a password but it's free and they don't start sending you junk mail or anything. regina
I'd love to hear from anyone with any information about Soloman Blankenship in Henry County, GA in 1840. Thanks . . . . . Bob Bryant

Calvin Blankenship is the only thing that has appeared on the census so that is all I know of. I am not sure what denomination they were or even what religion, but I would have to assume they were christian. My best bet is probably going to Texas co and praying for the best. Unfortunately I am 6 hrs away among other obstacles. But I have not added my name to those co, I will look at a map and add my name to those lists as well. Thanks for the suggestions, I never would of thought of many of them! Misty

I have a copy of his land purchase from the gov web site. I know he was in MO by the time his first son was born in 1841. He was a corporal in the Confederate Army. Unfortunately confederate records are hard to come by and I am not sure what to look for anyway. I do have a copy of his Muster Roll, but thats it. Am I up the Creek without a paddle? Misty >> Did you try: (I know some are obvious but you never know) 1) familysearch.org 2) posting inquiries on some of the lists connected with locations like camden co,Mo or OK or Laclede Co etc. ? 3) searches on family treemaker.com 4) church records if you know the denomination? baptisms, confirmations are in local record books for some denominations 5) calling or writing long lost cousins- I got lucky and found one that had done genealogy for years on our family 6) trying searches on variations of the name, or the middle name if you know it- a lot of people didn't go by their first name that's all I can think of right now.
