Tam... Do you have the address of the Franklin Co. Historical Society handy? If so, please e-mail it to Sue. I have it at work and (naturally) didn't want to visit THAT place on a holiday. She wants to make a submission, but I told her she'd have to hurry. Thanks. I don't know how this will fit anywhere, but you may find it interesting, as I do. I have a Rowland Pryor Blankenship b 1879, Ky mar to Ida Arms and died 23 Feb 1948, Grayson Co, Ky. . His parents were James H Blankenship b 1819 Ky and Amanda Smothers or Armilda Smothers, his 3d wife, b 1851 Ky. James H Blankenship's other children by Amanda were Mahala b 1872, Lucinda b 1873, Christianab 1877, Marion Washington b 1876, Rowland Pryor and Anna . By the 2nd marriage, James H Blankenship and Elizabeth Kinglesmith had; Rosella Dora b 1865, Andrew Jackson b 1867, Willie, Johnny L b 1869 Do any of these sound familiar to you? James is the brother of my gr grandfather, Edwin Blankenship b abt 1826, lived most of life in Hardin Co, Ky. I think their father was Wm Blankenshp b abt 1765 (not cure of illegible date in census), as they lived all near each other in Hardin Co, Ky at one time. Sue: Wish your theory was right but just couldn't be. Edmund was in Madison County, Al in 1808. Rowland came in 1818. They lived on adjoining property and rented slaves together. I stumbled on this information in the Courthouse when looking for Browns in the index. A man came from Bedford Couinty to try to Collect a judgment that had been rendered against Edmund in 1807 and we think that's probably why he left. The fact that Rowland came later and they became closely associated leads us to believe there was a close relationship there. Since I have had no luck in finding Rowland's parents/siblings, I thought it worth a try to see if I could have better luck with Edmund which might lead me to Rowland's family. So far no luck. The parentage of both is a big mystery and I KNOW THEY HAD PARENTS! Will just keep on trying. Thanks for your time and help. Nolene

HEY RESEARCHERS, This is part of what I have been looking for. From me back to Joel Hudson has been proven through Court House records, and Gayle King Blankenship's book. From Joel Hudson back to Henry Hudson I got the information from the LDS website. 1381. She married Lee Roy Altice 04 June 1971 in Chesterfield, South Carolina. He was born 21 November 1945 in Roanoke, VA. Now if I could do something like this with the Liggon's, Womack's, Hill's and other families that was conected with the Blankenship's I would be a happy camper. Sue Blankenship Altice

There is a lengthy review of a feud between the Witcher and Clement families which resulted in a gunfight at Dickinson's store 25, February 1860. "When the smoke cleared James and William Clement were dead, and Ralph Clement lay dying." I am not sure if this is what you are looking for. There is no mention of Carrie, but the incident was a major event in the history of Franklin County, VA. What is interesting Sue is that on page 222 just before the above is recorded, the assault in which Samuel Dillion charged that Barnett, Elijah, Elisha, Hezekiah, Isham (Jr.) and Isham (Sr.) and William Blankinship with "Swords, Clubs, Fists upon the said plaintiff . . . an assault did make and him did beat wound and ill treat so that his life was greatly despaired." This reference to a court record may be the only written proof on some of the siblings of Isham (Sr.). Bill Huntington Beach >> Hi Bill, and all other researchers, Bill that is the book I wanted. I was told by my mother about this gunfight years ago and wanted to read about it now in the book. My mother and her family knew the Witchers and the Clements. Mamma's family is the ones that told me about Carrie. Check in the Franklin Co. Census for 1870 or 1880 and you will find her I am SURE. She never married, so I am told, and she lived in the big brick house that her family had built, all by herself. She always wore black or gray clothes, long and loose. I was told that her hair grow long and straight and it looked like she had never combed or brushed it. My daddy told me that there is still blood on a rock near where the store was, we looked for the area once before and did not find anything. We did see the field, where the shooting was and it is all grown up in weeds now. And if memory serves me right here I do not think any of the Witcher boy were killed, two were wounded and had to be treated by the doctor. Bill, all of this happened in Franklin Co. on the Pittsylvania Co. side of Franklin, not the Bedford side. Hi, thanks for note. Do you have the parents of your Luther Blankenship? I know there are a lot of them in Tennessee, and I thought Luther was in Corbin, Ky. But since we did not have close touch and 50 yrs have passed I don't know what happened. Grandma Belle Blankenship Cruse died in 1936, so this nephew, Luther had to have visited her before that. If you have any of his connections in Ky also, I am interested. Also his parents. Thanks, Janet >
I had a great uncle named Felix Luther Blankenship who went by the name Luther. He was born in May 1883 and his wife was Verggie Foster. Their children were: Sadie (married William Deming), Jesse, Troy (had a club foot, died when he was ten) and Trudie. This family was from Guys, McNairy Co, TN. However, I do not have a Belle Cruse in my index. Hey Researchers, The website below is for the Womack family. The researcher of this page has gone into great details about the family and who lived near the Womacks. In several places though out this website he refers to Hudson Blankenship and his son Henry Blankenship. This is one site I think all Blankenship researchers should read, then you can treat it as you see fit. According to this website Hudson Blankenship opened up the trade routes in VA between several cities. It seems that our Hudson had some of Henry Hudson nature for traveling in his blood. I have not wrote to the owner of this site yet and ask for any proof of any of this. http://hometown.aol.com/gideon1060/MyFamily.html This is some of the things I have cut and pasted from that site 1820: (Census) William Womack, Campbell County, VA., lived next door to Henry Blankenship, (son of Hudson Blankenship who had established the trade route ca., 1756 from Richmond, to Lynchburg, to Charlotteville, to areas in and around a village that had sprung up, now Bristal, Tennessee.) Hudson was a "Tinner" (trader) and builder. Francis Womock of Chesterfield Co. & Susannah his wife, to William Walthall of same Co. L 4: = 65 curr. 25 acres in Chesterfield Co. adjoining Richard Kennon, Womack Puckett and Thimothe Puckett, being part of a tract of 100 acres formerly belonging to John Puckett, May 2, 1755, D.B. 2, page 244. Ordered that John Blankinship, Joseph Blankinship, and Francis Womock summoned to appear at the next court to answer concerning a contempt by them late offered in suffering a prisoner of whom they were intrusted as Guards to escape out of prison to which he had been before only committed. Sept.1753. O. B. 1, page 391. Francis Womock, same as above to pay costs and a fine of 20 shillings each and sd. John Blankinship be discharged from any further attendance. Oct. 1753. 1 ibid p. 406. Larkin Womack, William D. Taylor and Charles H. Taylor, were all "Tinners" (Traders) just as Hudson Blankenship who established the route to and from Bristol and his son Henry Blankenship who lived next door to William and Catherine Womack 1820 in Campbell County, Virginia. Larkin (per tax records, paid taxes in Buckingham County, VA., thru 1856.) Larkin and Mary Taylor lived in Bristal Co., Tennessee. Real estate value $ 2400. His neighbor on one side was Rev., James C. King and wife whose daughter had married the banker Joseph R. Anderson. on the other side of Larkin was a hotel. Per deeds, after June 1860, Larkin purchased lots 46,64,and 66. which included the Exchange Hotel and this property included all between 4th Street and 6th Street (now Olive Street). http://hometown.aol.com/gideon1060/MyFamily.html http://search.hometown.aol.com/find.adp?cid=10000&resultOrder=1&queryToFlush=& query=Franklin%20Co%2e%2c%20VA%20Genealogy

Hi Researchers, I am looking for a book about Franklin Co. (not sure of title). This book was written by Pat Wingfield and it goes into some of the history of Franklin Co. and mentions a lot of the families of that area. It tells about families and who was living where in Franklin Co. The one I am interested in is the Clemens (sp) family. I was told my family that there were several boys in the Clemens family and they were all shot to death over some land argument. This drove their sister Carrie in sane. Some in the area thought Carrie was a witch the way she acted. If any one knows where I can find this book please let me know. If you have any information on this family please let me know. Thanks Sue

Hi Sue... No, I don't think these guys hook up with your bunch in any way. According to Gayle, John is the son of Cisley Blankenship who married Barnett Jones. I think she is correct. Cisley was a daughter of Peter and Cisley. Cisley was born about 1770, married Barnett Jones in Franklin Co. on October 23, 1795. John was born 1785 to 1790. Franklin Co. Sept. 1793 Court: "Overseers of the poor bind John Blankenship, bastard child of Cisley Blankenship to Dudley Lumsden". Married Mary Ann Dillion on February 7, 1804, Stokes Co., NC, daughter of Elizabeth Blankenship Dillion and Jesse Dillion. Children of John and Mary Ann: 1) Peter Blankenship, born about August 31, 1805. 2) William Moore Blankenship, born about 1807. Married 1st) August 28, 1827, Giles Co., Mary E. "Polly" Martin, daughter of John and Susannah Wagonner Martin., 2nd) July 8, 1846, Marion Co., Ohio, Rebecca McGee. 3) Elizabeth Blankenship, born around 1808, married March 30, 1827, Giles Co., to Jeremiah Shrewsbury (family names also found as Solesberry/Solesbury/Salisbury). 4) Thomas Rice Blankenship, born 1811. Married September 19, 1849, Patrick Co. VA, Ann T. Potter, daughter of William and Nancy Potter. 5) Arthur Mosley Blankenship, born 1810 to 1815. Married January 18, 1836, Botetourt Co. VA, Catharine Wertz. 6) Mary Ann Blankenship 7) Frances/Fannah "Fanny" Blankenship, born about 1815. Married 1st) Abraham Garrison (also found as Garretson), January 19, 1835. 2nd) St. Clair Abbott, Mercer Co. WV, October 1869. Hope this helps.
