Sue, Give me a few days to check my Ohio records. 1809 is a likely year and Ezekial is unusual enough that it should stand out. It sounds like one of the names I saw in West Virginia records. Pat
Kay, Boy, that is a scarey thought isn't it? Let's hope it was a very rare thing. I don't even want to think about it, but I guess we must face reality. Maybe the gene pool was diverse enough to tolerate it! Our Chambers and Blankenships married cousins -- that we know for sure. That wasn't uncommon however, so they weren't unique. Do you find Blankenships among the Melungeons? I have visited that website and read enough to think that is a distinct possibility. I ordered some books on Melungeons through interlibrary loan and find it fascinating. It would answer a lot of questions that I have. Pat
Pat, we were just discussing polygamy on the Melungeon-Kin list the other day and how common it was, especially for men to have children with sisters, apparently. I'm not aware of any in my Blankenship lines - is anyone? Kay
I don't know Lydia's parents names or any siblings. I only know that she was 17 or 18 when my grandmother was born, and she died when my grandmother was 3 years old. Very hard to find any information. I was hoping someone might have my great grandmother Lydia in their family tree. I'll keep searching. Carol
Pat, Ezekial was born somewhere in Ohio in 1809. At some point he ended up in Fleming, KY and married there and had 9 kids. The kids went different directions. The couple I can find in IL the area is Peoria, Tazewell. Now one of Ezekial's grandchildren moved to Indiana and married a woman from there and they went to Peoria. Ezekial is where I am stuck. Sorry got so rapped up in my Lewis, forgot to post this. Found out today from an Elder in Stoney Fork, TN Community. Segal Blankenship died in a Mine Colapse about 1930's. The gentleman said he was born at Vall Mountain in Anderson County, TN on the river. Which will be part of the Stoney Fork River, on a present map. The mine was located in Clinchmore Camp, on the Clinchmore River which is the west side of Caryville Mountain, in Campbell County. He is buried at Smokey Junction Cemetery, which is in Scott County. Also, the Floyd Blankenship I posted a month ago.....nobody knows where he came from, probably the Carolina's, but is buried in thier cemetery at Beechfork. Again, Campbell County, in the Stoney Fork Community. The cemetery listings for these counties are at the Genweb Archives, under state of TN, then Counties. TT
Dear Sue, What years were your ancestors in Ohio? It is quite possible that my line was there around the turn of the century. It looks like they left North Carolina after 1790 and turned up in Kentucky around 1805 and in Indiana a few years later. There are some clues that they may have been in Ohio, but nothing substantial. Also, where and when in Illinois? My line were in Vermilion County in the early 1800s. This has been a fascinating search. I am enjoying it, but becoming skeptical that I will ever really find any answers. Pat
Dear Regina, Some of my Blankenship family line went to Texas also. I don't know the year, but Blankenship researchers that I share information with have talked about a Texas line. You have a lot of information and I'm sure you'll be able to make more connections. The toughest part seems to be to tie the Blankenships with a Cherokee tradition to the main branch in Virginia. I suggest that at some point these men had multiple families by different women, perhaps not married in the traditional sense. I know it goes against the grain with some people, but it offers an explanation. Polygamy was practiced in North Carolina and Tennessee in the late 1700s and early 1800s before it was outlawed. I have read quite a lot of history of this era and believe this possibility should be considered. In my line the Blankenships married into the Chambers family again and again. In the Chambers family there is definitely Cherokee blood and they were in Arkansas in the early 1800s with the "Old Settlers." Bob Blankenship lives on the Cherokee reservation in North Carolina and has written several books on the census rolls. It would be interesting to know which of the known Blankenship men is the Patriarch of his family. Good luck and keep searching, Pat Torrance
Did you get a copy of her death certificate or obit? That is where I get a lot of leads. How about siblings did she have any? Kay, I'm looking for information on Annie Mae's mother..Lydia Blankenship. You sent me information on a Lydia that you had, but it was the wrong years. Mine was born in 1896/1897 and died in 1917/1918. Carol
Carol, Am I reading right? You are looking for an Annie May, daughter of Lydia and ______ BLANKENSHIP? Kay
Sue, I don't know who her parents were. She died when my grandmother was only three years old. Do you or anyone else know where I go to find guardianship records. My grandmother was raised in McDowell County, W.Va. However, when I sent for a copy of her birth certificate, there isn't a record of it. So either she was born elsewhere, one was never filed. My grandmother was Annie Mae Blankenship. I hit my brick wall early in the search and haven't been able to break through yet. Carol
