Sue, it's been a while since we last talked....but I know there were several on this list researching the KY line and also on Kay's Melungeon list, or maybe the WVPioneer List. I'm sorry no one thanked you, but it is the weekend, and I know I catch up on Sunday. Thank you, Kay, guess one can always learn something new!
Sue B. Do you have a Abraham Mackness Blankenship or Nancy Godsey Blankenship on your list? Abraham is the ine I'm stuck on. Thanks Dorothy H.
Melungeons were an Appalchian Mountain culture of people that formed because of being social outcasts because of being multi-racial. It is theorized that the first Melungeon people were tri-racial (being mainly of Mediterranean/Portugese descent) but then intermarried with the locals until they "passed" for white. If you have stories of having Native American in your background that you have been unable to prove, it's likely you could find some connections here. OR, if you have found ancestors listed as FPC on census records ... Kay

There is no better way to understand this than clicking on the website that the listserver posts frequently. I wrote it down, but you will do better to copy it directly from the screen because I'm not sure if I have it right. I read here that Melungeons are 1-3% Indian, 3-9% African and 90 - 95% European. There is a good explanation of how this was decided and why you can be proud if you qualify. Pat

Carol I was reading your post and thought of something that might help you. My husband was born in McDowell Co., West Virginia, but his birth certificate is registered in Washington, DC. Pat, I definitely think the BLANKENSHIPs - some of them - lived in the Melungeon community. There are GIBSON connections in my direct line that I know were "Melungeon" or are at least listed on census records as FPC ... My great-grandfather had children by 2 sisters, kept 2 houses on the same property - a family in each. Bkay
