This first part is from Mike Blankenship mblankenship@mindspring.com (Michael E. Blankenship): Is the fact that Ralph arrived with people having English names a sure guarantee that he was also English? I also have a record of marriages (somewhere around here) from Cork Co. Ireland which took place in the 1680s, and include people with the name BLANKENSHIP. Do you know anything about these? Of couse, this would have fitted in perfectly with the time frame of Ralph's life. This second part is from Don Blankenship donb@megabits.net (Don in FL): It may even be possible to discover the family trees of those people who traveled with Ralph Blankinship across the Atlantic and by doing so further learn of where those people originated in the British Isles. Mike Blankenship notes that he also has a 1680's Cork County, Ireland record of marriages in his collection of reference materials. In that listing he recalls seeing people with the name BLANKENSHIP. Now that is really quite interesting and needs follow-up work! I think we have been operating for the last 30 years or so on the premise that the surname Blankenship was originally Blenkinsopp and these Blenkinsopps came from Northumberland, England. Why do we believe this? Because author Col. Blankenship believed it and planted it in our minds. Wouldn't it be interesting to discover that our line of Blankenships is not from England at all, but from Ireland. Another observation which Mike Blankenship makes concerns people who presumably are identified as shipmates of Ralph Blankinship and include those named below, all of whom have English sounding names. Jno. Walker, (JOHN WALKER) Tho. Mercey, (THOMAS MERCEY) Ralph Blankship, Jno. Tossill, (JOHN TOSSILL) Roger Roberts, John Howard Sarah Shepherd This part is from Sharon Sue Blankenship Altice MrsLady002@aol.com: I have done alot, like hours and hours, of research on the people that traveled with our Ralph Blankship. I was hoping to find a clue to something in Ralph's life. Jno. Walker, (JOHN WALKER) Tho. Mercey, (THOMAS MERCEY) Ralph Blankship, Jno. Tossill, (JOHN TOSSILL) Roger Roberts, John Howard Sarah Shepherd All of the information I have found, I have sent in to the post and it should be in the rootsweb achives. I know from my research that the following people were from Ireland: Richard Kennon, John Walker, The Womack family, Roger Roberts and if I am not mistaken here I think John Howard also was from Ireland. I have not had a chance to do the research on the other names at this time but I plan on looking into them shortly. I hope this helps with you all discussion. I am still looking for Francis Clapp that was imported by Martha, July 9, 1724. Sue B. Altice

Hi Friends! The following website came to me from Tackett-L. Sounds like a great idea! Michelle www.ancientfaces.com

We are all very fair skinned. I even moved to another state, and a lady I work with remarked on the fact that the only Blankenships that she knows is blonde. Pam >> You are right--other than a couple of African American Blankenship families--all the rest that I know are blonde. I am from a family of blue eyed blondes. My mother had strong Cherokee features, and had the darker coloring, but all six of us have my dad's blue eyes and hair that started out white and has slowly darkened over the years until now we're all at various stages of blonde to light honey color. We know very little of our Blankenship family. The first we know of was my GGGrandfather, John C. Blankinship, b. 1825 in Tennessee. He married Margaret Cannon, b. 1827, in Tennessee. They married in Gibson County, Tennessee in 1846. We find them on the 1850 census in Gibson County with two daughters. Buena Vista, aged 4 and Eliza, aged 3. In 1860, we find Margaret still in Gibson County with a daughter, Mandia, aged 13, John, aged 7, and Albert, aged 3. (Albert is my ggrandfather. We assume that Mandia and Eliza are the same person--probably using a middle name at one of the census. We don't know where John was at this time, and we don't know what happened to Buena Vista. And, we don't know what happened to Margaret and Eliza (Mandia) after that. Our next record is when Albert married Sarah Richardson in either Haywood or Crockett County. They moved to Lauderdale County where they raised their family. Both are buried in Lauderdale County. Albert's brother, John lived in Lauderdale County also. We have not been able to place our John with parents. There was a John, the same age as ours who was the son of Thomas and Mary McKelvey Blankinship in Gibson County in the 1850 census, but he was listed with his parents while our John was listed with his wife and family. Because the two Johns were the same age and in the same county, the two have been confused which makes it even harder to untangle. It has been suggested that the two are the same person--just counted in both households, but I truly don't think so. I don't know when our name went from "in" to "en" I know my grandparents used the en spelling, but everything we've found on John was spelled with the in. I sure wish someone could help me figure this one out! Dorothy
Red hair also runs in my family. My brother, sister and myself are light skinned, dark hair, I have blue and they both have green eyes. Carol

Dorothy H. >> Hi Dorothy H. Yes, ma'am I have that information where Martha imported Francis Clapp. Thank you for making sure of that, you are a sweet person. I am trying to make a connection between Martha and Francis Clapp. Anything at this point would be nice. The posting I sent in about Francis was all the places I have looked trying to make a connection. I feel like if we can tie the two together somehow we might get a new avenue to research. Thanks again for sending this in and keep up the good research work. Sue B. Altice

Sorry Larry, the Lewis you are refering to, I do not know. I do know that Spencer Blankenship had a son named Lewis, and they all moved to Indiana. Mine, and the other 2, we are trying to sort out is all Franklin County, VA. And that is where my Lewis J. died in 1906. He is buried at Boones Mill, Rocky Mount, VA. on the Blackwater River. Thanks, and Happy Haunting! Sue B., I don't know it I sent this to you before, so here it is again just in case I didn't. Abracts of Land Patents of Henrico & Goochland Counties (1624-1732) page 64; Page 64; Patent book 12, To Martha Blankenship 250 acres, Henrico south side of James River beginning on Mr Henry Walthall's line to East side of the main road, 20 shillings and impotation of Francis Clappe, 9 July 1724. Its been here before, but here it is again, perhaps someone will connect: Myself: Byron Kenneth Blankenship; John C. Blankenship, b 1919 in Spencerville, Oklahoma; William Oscar Blankenship, b. 1887 in Liberty Alabama; Benjamin Franklin Blankenship, b. about 1849-1851 in Dothan, Alabama. (End of Trail) Family rumor has it that Benjamin Franklin may have been hung for the shooting of another man. Benjamin Franklin was married to Mary Jane Woodam (born about 1849-1851 in Dothan, Alabama) between 1868 and 1871. Mary Jane died in Watonga, Oklahoma on January 28, 1933 in the home of my grandfather, William Oscar Blankenship and was buried in Ft. Towson, Oklahoma . Benjamin had not been around for years..... ???? Benjamin's mother is believed to have been Nancy Coxwell, b. Abt. 1820. I would be very appreciative of identifying contacts in or around Ft. Towson, Oklahoma, and/or the Woodam family
Hi Sonya, I meant to write earlier and send my condolences on the passing of your Uncle Beverly Blankenship. I hope you got to interview him for your family files before he passed away. I'm going to suggest that you check into Jesse B. Blankenship as the father of John Peter. John Peter was born about 1823, could have been living with his grandfather, John, on the 1830 census. Just theories I've been working on. By the way, I think all of John Peter's children were born in Franklin Co., and the family always resided there. ***************** One other thing is that the Germans tend to have a darker skin coloring that the people in England. This could ask the question of the dark skin in our families today. ***************** All of the Blankenship's that I know have been mostly blonde, and I do mean blonde, except for my cousins with the Cherokee blood. We are all very fair skinned. I even moved to another state, and a lady I work with remarked on the fact that the only Blankenships that she knows is blonde. Willa, This is a bit of a long shot, but could Eliza be Elijah? My husband's Blankenship connection comes from Judy Blankenship, d/o Isham W. Blankenship. Judy's daughter, Cynthia Sparlin married Mark Cole. Isham Blankenship was born in North Carolina, lived for a time in Tennessee, then finally settled in Newton Co, MO. What is interesting is that the Coles and Blankenships seem to have traveled together through the later part of the 1800's. I know for sure that William E. Blankenship, Cynthia's cousin, moved to what is now Valley County, Idaho at the same time that Mark and Cynthia moved there. Some of this line of Blankenships later moved to Linn County, Oregon. So did the Coles. Part of the Cole family moved to Northeast Texas. They can be found in Collin and Cooke County, but there is some indication that they were also in Red River and Bowie County, as well as across the border into Arkansas. My point is: every time I search there, I run across Blankenships. It may be just a coincidence of migration patterns, but I keep wondering if there is a connection. I believe that, Isham W's father was Elijah Blankenship, s/o Isham, s/o John B, s/o Ralph. Was there a branch of Elijah's family that settled in that area of Texas? This seems to be going the long way around with a lot of speculation. But it is just a thought.
