    2. More Blankenships from Alabama here. I now live in SC but my mother, who is still living in Alabama has been there since about 1936. My father, d. 1986, was the son of John Thomas BLANKENSHIP, the son of Henry BLANKENSHIP, Jr.. It is nice to hear of some more Alabama Blankenships. C. R. (Bob) BLANKENSHIP.

    3. Hi There were a lot of Blankenships married to Indian women and had large family. By the way, Bob Blankenship is not and has not been the head of the Cherokee tribe in N.C. I know him and his brother Ken who is in charge of the museum there. Bob does set on the council, but has never been Chief. That is a lot of different.. You might find some information on my web page about the Blankenships who have married Indians at http://home.earthlink.net/~wrpyle Ralph Winack27@aol.com wrote: > Which Blankenship had an Indian family? It has been widely speculated, and rumored, that the Blankenships who lived on Indian lands in N.C., GA and TN had two families. Some researchers even think perhaps one father could have been responsible for more than one family group having Indian mothers. Bob Blankenship is head of the Eastern band of Cherokees in N.C. He has written several publications pertaining to their records. He writes about the Cherokees who hid out in North Carolina and escaped being sent West with the Trail of Tears. There must have been a father named Blankenship there somewhere! Polygamy was commonly practiced until about 1820 when it was outlawed. Sue B. Altice posted a message on the Ross family. The daughter of Alexander Ross and Mourning Woody (A Cherokee woman) married Presley Blankenship (Frances Ross - 1/2 Cherokee) 24 Dec 1791 in VA. I have not seen any other documented marriages between Cherokee and Blankenship, but perhaps these alliances were never recorded. Pat T.

    3. Dear Sue, My GR GR GR Grandmother was Malinda Chambers, born to Mary Blankenship and James Chambers, who came into Clark County, Indiana by 1809 when they married. This is very early and eliminates them from a connection with the Blankenships who were involved in that incident at Dickenson's Store in 1860. Isham's family by Sarah Wilkinson went to Tenn about the same time my Blankenship and Chambers families turned up in Kentucky. I speculate that Isham took his white family to Tenn and the Cherokee mother of his half-breed children went to Indiana, but there is no proof. Those early census records only give the approximate age and sex of the family, along with the name of the head of household. There is an older woman in the household of James and Mary Blankenship Chambers, and she might have been the grandmother. I did see the reference to Catherine Chambers who married Alexander Ross. This is very interesting. They were both born about 1680 and this is promising. It shows there might be some connection between the two families very early on. I have good information on the Chambers line, but just like the Blankenships -- there is no record of marriages or wives. It was strictly a man's world. The key to connecting to the main tree would be to find who Mary Blankenship's father is. He was probably born around 1770. I think she must have been 15 years old when she married. It's just a guess, but her first daughter was married at 15, so it isn't unheard of. Does anybody know if there were removal records when the early Cherokee families left North Carolina in the early 1800s? I have never heard of any, and have no idea where to look for them. Pat T..
