Jan. 14, 1849, daughter of Dr. Frederick Augustus Webster, of Yarmouth, N.S. by his first wife, Margaret Helen McNaught, daughter of John and Mary (Lindsey) McNaught of Glasgow, Scotland. (9) Jotham, b. in 1784, and was about one year old when his parents removed to Nova Scotia. He settled at Pictou, N.S.; was a lawyer, who was "notable for discouraging litigation." He represented the county of Halifax in the Provincial Parliament in 1830, Pictou at that time being included in Halifax County. Mr. Blanchard while travelling in Scotland, married the widow Margaret Spears, a native of Scotland. Mr. Blanchard established in Pictou, the Colonial Patriot, which newspaper issued its first number on Dec. 7, 1827. His paper was too liberal for the times, and he was burned in effigy. Among those who attacked Mr. Blanchard most bitterly was Hon. Joseph Howe, in his paper, The Nova Scotia. "But the controversy helped to clear his (Howe's) mind as to the true principal of popular government." (See "Canada and Its Provinces," Vol. 13, pp. 276-277). F. E. Crowell Boston, Mass. ------------------------------- That's the article. I found some parts hard to follow as to who was whose child in the latter part but I guess that is "genealogy" talking. Myself I noted some new information as well as that some of the children were not mentioned. I also could see errors, such as: 1- The family of (7) Edward Sherburne consisted of twelve children, the twelfth being his son, William Henry, (my line) isn't there. 2- The above (9) Jotham was not a son of Jotham, but a grandson, being the son of (6) Jonathan whose name was spelled wrong. 3- (8) Nancy married Rev John Waddell not 'Joseph' 4- The name Wallenhaupt should have been spelled with an 'o', Wollenhaupt 5- (7) Edward Sherburne's wife has always been noted as Jean and sometimes Jane. This is the first I have seen it as Janet. 6- (6) Jonathan's wife's surname shown as Coggin has always been noted as Goggin. 7- The wife of James Fleming, son of (6) Jonathan, is surnamed Johnson where I have it as Johnstone 8- (2) Sarah's husband has been noted as Lipencutt, Lipencott, and either of these with a double 'p'. 9- (9) Jotham, Jonathan's son, never married Mrs. Spears in Scotland but in Nova Scotia. They met in Scotland after Jotham fell ill and she nursed him. After his return to Nova Scotia, his father went to bring Margaret to Nova Scotia. -- Rannie Index: John. 1767/8.
