SEVENTH GENERATION 66. Laban/Leban Blanchard b. 1764 Scituate, RI m. (67) Jane McDowell 67. Jane McDowell b. ABT 1759 Family (1): Elijah Shoemaker Sr. (died in Wyoming Massacre) Child: Col. Elijah Shoemaker Jr. Family (2): (66) Laban Blanchard i. (33) Phebe Blanchard John, this is what I have on Laban/Leban Blanchard. I suppose it is possible that "Laban" (Daniel Shoemaker's son-in-law) and "Leban", born in Scituate, RI are two different people. Jane McDowell ties the two together, so there would have to be two Janes in that case, too. Since Jane's father, John McDowell, was an immigrant from Ireland, I doubt that. Moreover, the emotional connection between the Shoemakers, the McDowells and Laban was so deep, I find it hard to see how Leban and Laban could be anything BUT the same person. Leban's father, Joseph Blanchard, was (probably tortured and) killed by Indians shortly after the Wyoming massacre -- in which Elijah Shoemaker Sr., Jane McDowell's brand new husband, and father of her one-month-old son Elijah Jr., was born. Fatherless Leban/Laban married widowed Jane, and raised their family. Daniel Shoemaker later sold his property to his nephew Elijah Jr., and named his own son Elijah in honor of his slain brother. Further evidence that we are talking about one and the same Jane McDowell is in the fact that a Shaw also married one of Daniel's daughters (John McDowell had become the owner of a Mr. Shaw's properties in Cherry Valley, PA, and the mother of the Shaw that married Daniel's daughter had also been born with the surname McDowell. To thicken the plot even more, Daniel Shoemaker himself was married to Anna McDowell, Jane's sister. (see my bit about the Wyoming Massacre at http://www.pacwest.net/bigshoe/shoegen.html ) I was thrown for a loop for a while because Jeremiah Blanchard Jr. also had a daughter Phebe Blanchard, born in the same year as Laban's Phebe, but Jeremiah's Phebe was listed as married to Caleb Cooper: Hi, Leban, was the son of Joseph and Mary Page, Joseph was the son of Timothy and Mary Edmunds. Timothy had a brother, Theophilus who had a son Jeremiah. I am descended from Jeremiah and Theophilus. Captain Jeremiah Blanchard went to the Wyoming Valley at the same time Joseph did. He was Captain of Fort Pittston (Brown) at the time of the Battle of Wyoming. Have you seen the information on the Blanchard family in The Michael Shoemaker Book. Laban had a sister named Phebe born at Scituate, RI May 13, 1771. Jeremiah Sr. also had a daughter with Phebe Bates, his wife, named Phebe born about1776- 1851 who married Rufus Clark. This Phebe may have been born in PA since the Susquehanna Company records show Jeremiah, her father was in residence there in 1772 and maybe earlier. If she was in Forty Fort then I strongly suspect that she is either the daughter of Joseph or Jeremiah or a granddaughter. To my knowledge, Joseph and Jeremiah were the only Blanchards to settle in that area of PA at that time. Jeremiah, Jr. also had a daughter Phebe born 1787, but I have her spouse listed as Caleb Cooper. Do you have any information on the William, father of Timothy and Jeremiah. Or any infor on the Wickenden's or Steere's? Have you done any research in the Wyoming Historical Society? Are you on the Blanchard list? Good luck, Joyce Burns, Reading, PA Jeremiah's father, Jeremiah Blanchard Sr., was in command of Fort Brown, across the river from where Elijah Shoemaker Sr. met his demise. He was unable to help those settlers because the Indians had taken all his boats. I haven't checked since finding out that Laban was Phebe's father, but the census or tax rolls ought to confirm that there was only one adult Laban Blanchard in the county where they were married.
