    1. [BLANCHARD] Elizabeth Blanchard born circa 1785
    2. Dear List, Now that I have the easiest parts of my genealogy fairly well researched, I'll start on the hardest, one of which is whether Elizabeth Blanchard was the mother of my second great-grandfather, Reuben Thorp Legg. Reuben's father, Caleb Legg, was born in Mendon, Worcester County, Massachusetts, 16 April 1779, the son of Reuben Legg and Elizabeth Fletcher. He is almost certainly the Caleb Legg who married Elizabeth Blanchard in Leicester, Worcester County, Massachusetts, 9 December 1802 (Vital Records of Leicester, Mass., published by Franklin W. Rice in 1903). Other Blanchards listed in this book include Barnard and Phebe Blanchard who had four children born between 1792 and 1800, and five Blanchard women, including Elizabeth, who married between 1768 and 1802. I don't know if Elizabeth's birthplace is Massachussetts; in the 1880 census, Reuben Thorp Legg gave his mother's birthplace as Connecticutt. Caleb moved to New York State some time after his marriage, settling first in Greene and Herkimer Counties before moving on to the Town of Caroline, Tompkins County. I have not found him in the 1810 census but in 1820, he is listed in Tompkins County with his wife and a boy and girl, both under 10, one of whom is Reuben Thorp Legg, born in 1817. In the 1850 census, Tompkins County, he is listed as living with Elsa, aged 58 (Caleb was 71) whose birthplace is given as Rhode Island. In 1860 and 1865, he lived with Reuben Thorp Legg, dying in 1866 at the age of 87. As his son and daughter were not born until at least ten years after Caleb's marriage to Elizabeth, it may be that Elizabeth died some time in their early marriage and Caleb married a second time. Does anyone on the list know anything of the Leicester Blanchards or have any information on the Elizabeth Blanchard who married Caleb Legg? Any information would be gratefully received. Ruth
