When I was discussing PML (Personalized Mailing Lists) at RootsWeb, yesterday, I thought something was not right but failed to act on my intuition. I dug out the original notice from RootsWeb about "gatewayed" messages and now realize that this applies only to GenConnect messages; <not> the PML messages! Many of you will recall that in Dec. 1998, no doubt resulting from increasing competition, and in an attempt to maintain and improve their share of the genealogists using the Internet, RootsWeb set up the GenConnect Boards, a 'suite' of seven sites specially geared to exchange information on the subjects of: Bible records, Bios, Deeds, Obits, Pensions, Queries, and Wills. Because they act more like bulletin boards than mail lists, they were called "Boards". BLANCHARD-L requested the management of the seven BLANCHARD Boards, to consolidate BLANCHARD genealogy at RootsWeb, and avoid having them administered by some group that had no connection with our List. There is no 'membership' requirement to post to these boards so anyone can post information and questions or they can reply to previous messages, all of which are maintained in "threaded" archives. There is relatively light traffic on these Boards and they require little supervision. Fewer than 60 posts have been made to all of our Boards and most of these are queries. If you want to view our GenConnect Boards go to the main BLANCHARD Resource Page at: http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/b/l/BLANCHARD/ and scroll down to the Boards. All post are reported to me as the list manager but I have not regularly reported these to BLANCHARD-L. Here is an example which was received yesterday. ________ Date: Sat, 29 Jul 2000 19:57:23 -0700 Message-Id: <200007300257.e6U2vNW22492@cgi.rootsweb.com> To: fab@klink.net From: genconnect@genconnect.rootsweb.com Subject: New BLANCHARD (BLANCARD, BLANCHER, BLANSHARD, etc.)Queries Post X-UIDL: <[A!!h3b!!Q!U!!L6~!! BLANCHARD (BLANCARD, BLANCHER, BLANSHARD, etc.)Queries A new message, "Norman Blanchard, Hannah Hicks," was posted by Gordon Blanchard on Sat, 29 Jul 2000 Surname: Blanchard, Posey, Fleming --- NAME: Gordon Blanchard EMAIL: gblanch@telusplanet.net DATE: Jul 29 2000 URL: http:// QRYTEXT: I am trying to locate any siblings of Norman Blanchard b. 1806 in Vermont. He was married to Hannah Hicks, born in Detroit Mi. They lived and farmed in Michigan. Their family was Charles W., Francis, Mary, Adaline and Alice. They were last known to have lived in Iosco County, East Tawas, Mi. in 1880. Charles W.,b. 1840 was my ggrandfather. He married Margaret Low b.1840,and they lived in St. Clair, Mi. Their children were Nina, Alice, Francis (my grandfather), Norman, Minnie and Gordon. I would like to know where in Vermont Norman was born, who his parents were and any info on siblings of Norman. I haven't been able to determine where Charles died and was buried. Margaret and several of their children are buried in St. Clair but no trace of Charles.. This is an automatically-generated notice. <http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/Blanchard?admin> _________ Here is what RootsWeb had to say in March, when they set up the "Gateways" - GenConnect boards can now be "gatewayed" to mailing lists. When a board is gatewayed to a mailing list, every message posted to the GenConnect board will be forwarded to the corresponding mailing list. The message sent to the list will contain the URL of the specific post to allow the list subscribers to respond directly to the message. In this manner, gatewaying will enable more effective communication between the mailing lists and the GC boards. _________ I apologize for the confusion and now correct my statement: If you think that all the messages posted to our GenConnect Boards should be "gatewayed" to BLANCHARD-L or if you have any questions about this process, please let me know. The issue of the PML messages still remains. I welcome your suggestions for if/how these should reported to our List Members. My ggrandfather, Joseph Elam was killed in a logging accident in 1919, at Camp #6 in Alba. I have been told that these camps were owned by the Antrim Iron Company. I am very much interested in finding where background info and records can be located. If anyone has any ideas, it would be most appreciated. __________ Many of these PML messages are long with 'Blanchard' buried somewhere in them. Fletch
