Hi Fellow Blanc/shard Researchers, Some of you will know that I am the newletter editor for the Blanc/shard FHS here in the UK and very occasionally pop up on this list. One of our members spotted something recently which may be of interest to those connected to the Thomas Blanchard who once resided at Goodworth Clatford. At the end of the last century smallpox swept the UK and compulsory vaccination was introduced. In the interest of brevity (there is much more to this story) one Kate Blanchard of Clatford refused to have her children vaccinated and went to prison twice for her strong beliefs in 1896. So vociferous was her objection and that of others in the district that she became a sought after speaker in other areas of the country where there was campaigning against the law. My question is, does anybody know anything of Kate's husband and family. For my part I can tell you that a full account is given in "Look Back at Andover", Vol 1 no 8, September 1997, obtainable from Andover History and Archaeology Society c/o Andover Public Library, Chantry Way, Andover SP10 1LT, UK The cost is GBP 4 including postage - I doubt if USD would be appreciated for this small amount because of conversion/bank charges Regards John Blanchard john@jblanchard.demon.co.uk
