Bates' book itself contains surname indices, and the index pages here appear to be exact transcriptions of those originals. Please note that a surname- only index, while ideal for one-name studies, can be excruciating for other purposes. Dyer's approach is producing a compact, alphabetical listing, which is an excellent companion to the literal transcription (which was, in turn, intended to be an exact transcription of the original records). I would say there is room for both approaches. John Chandler
