    3. It has been a while since I posted some administrative type messages and I will post these individually from my accumulated list. Generally, file attachments to mail list messages have been discouraged by RootsWeb but I recently received an update to their current policy. Andrew Billinghurst, one of the RW staff members, in a note to Listowners-L on 16 Feb 2000 said, >Attachments are permissible when they are text only, and not HTML. >It is binary files (.exe, .jpg, .gif, ....) and html files that are caught by the >server. ['caught', meaning filtered by the listserver SW. ] >The original reasoning for blocking those sorts of attachments was >1)size of files >2) possibility of virus >3) comprehension of the messages It is my understanding that attached files are not archived and since the purpose of most genealogy lists is to share information now and in the future, there seems to be little need for them. If long, specially formatted messages are to be shared among list members, it is best to make arrangements beforehand and then send only to personal mailboxes. However, RW no longer has a ban on attached text files. Fletch
