    1. [BLANCHARD] Adm. #4, Search Engine for BLANCHARD-L Page
    2. Fletcher Blanchard
    3. I hope you are all taking advantage of the databases that are on the BLANCHARD-L Web Page at: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~blanch-l/blpref.html Many web masters are installing search engines on their web pages to make it easier for readers to retrieve information. Since our databases are all indexed, such an addition may not be necessary. However, a while ago, I had FreeFind.com index our site but I have not added the HTML to install the search feature. There is no charge to use these search programs, but the downside is that the program owners make their money by displaying ad banners on the searched pages. I would prefer not to have these distractions on our pages. Because the B-L page is part of our benefit as a RootsWeb Sponsor +, we do not have ad banners like those found on the Freepages at RootsWeb. In addition to the search engine, FreeFind provides several other features including a Site Map and a What's New list. Please let me know what you think about this. I believe that RootsWeb has been looking into offering a similar search engine that would be 'banner free' for RW supporters but I haven't seen anything definite. If you know more about this, please let me know. Fletch

    1. [BLANCHARD] Adm. #2, Vital Records of Braintreee, MA
    2. Fletcher Blanchard
    3. Thanks to Mary Daily for alerting us to David Blackwell's "Free Books Online Effort". I checked out his "Records of the Town of Braintree (Massachusetts) 1640 to 1793 and would like to offer the following comments. It appears that, compared to what Frank Dyer is in the process of accomplishing with his presentation of the Bates records, the overall efforts are a duplication. The differences are in the way the material is organized and the ease of accessing particular records and facts. [The Blackwell pages] Scanned pages appear to have been OCR processed and converted to HTML. All the web pages are based on pages from Bates plus additional pages that Blackwell prepared for the Indexes. CONTENTS TOWN RECORDS, Page 1 to 625 BIRTHS, MARRIAGES AND DEATHS, 628 to 890 INDEX OF NAMES ON TOWN RECORDS, 891 to 911 " SUBJECTS, 912 " TOWNS, 918 " LOCAL PLACES, 919 " MARRIAGES, 921 " INTENTIONS OF MARRIAGE, 925 " BIRTHS, 929 " DEATHS, 935 " TOWNS, &C. 938 ERRATA, 940 For example, the Marriage Index begins on Pg 921 where Blackwell has listed the surnames alphabetically along with links to all the Bates pages that have marriage information for that surname. You need to scroll through each linked page for marriage information on the surname. Births, Deaths, etc. are handled the same way. [The Dyer Pages] To date, you will find the following links: Births 1640-1793 Marriages 1640-1793 Deaths 1640-1793 These are three separate databases (files) that Dyer has prepared from the Bates "pages". They are displayed in table form, arranged alphabetically by surname first and given name second, with the following headers: Surname Given Gender Birth Date Father Mother Page Errata, Comments I suspect that Frank may eventually break up these threee large files into I suspect that Frank may eventually break up these three large files into a number of separate files to improve browser loading time and may prepare an Index that will, at least, permit linking from letters A-Z to the surnames that start with those letters. Or, he may provide an index of surnames that will link directly to the first record for that surname. Maybe the user should view both the Blackwell and the Dyer pages and then decide which format they prefer to use. Fletch

Bates' book itself contains surname indices, and the index pages here appear to be exact transcriptions of those originals. Please note that a surname- only index, while ideal for one-name studies, can be excruciating for other purposes. Dyer's approach is producing a compact, alphabetical listing, which is an excellent companion to the literal transcription (which was, in turn, intended to be an exact transcription of the original records). I would say there is room for both approaches. John Chandler

    3. Frank Dyer is transcribing the Vital Records of Braintree, Massachusetts (1640-1793), Edited by Samuel A. Bates in 1886. If you had early ancestors in this area, you might want to check this. Here is what Frank said in a note to me last week, "This entails putting all Births, Deaths & Marriages into separate databases, and arranging the Surnames & Given Names in alphabetical order. (They are all mixed together in the book). The Vital Records & the "Sprague Collection" compliment each other tremendously. I am uploading this to my web site as time & my health permit." Some of you are familiar with the work that Frank has done to prepare the Waldo Sprague's "cards" as a database. He already has >750K in the "Braintree Births' section of Bates. Both databases are found on Frank's main page: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~dyer/ Scroll down toward the bottom of the page. 1. [BLANCHARD] Adm. #1, Attached Files
    2. Fletcher Blanchard
    3. It has been a while since I posted some administrative type messages and I will post these individually from my accumulated list. Generally, file attachments to mail list messages have been discouraged by RootsWeb but I recently received an update to their current policy. Andrew Billinghurst, one of the RW staff members, in a note to Listowners-L on 16 Feb 2000 said, >Attachments are permissible when they are text only, and not HTML. >It is binary files (.exe, .jpg, .gif, ....) and html files that are caught by the >server. ['caught', meaning filtered by the listserver SW. ] >The original reasoning for blocking those sorts of attachments was >1)size of files >2) possibility of virus >3) comprehension of the messages It is my understanding that attached files are not archived and since the purpose of most genealogy lists is to share information now and in the future, there seems to be little need for them. If long, specially formatted messages are to be shared among list members, it is best to make arrangements beforehand and then send only to personal mailboxes. However, RW no longer has a ban on attached text files. Fletch

    1. Wm. Newton Blanchard ca 1812-1843 NC>AL
    2. Jolie Blanchard
    3. Those of us researching William Newton Blanchard in AL are beginning to despair. We have turned over every stone we can find in North Carolina and have not found him and his brothers as children in any of the Blanchard families. His exact birthdate is unknown, but is circa 1812-1820. According to a letter written by his son, Wm had two brothers: James and Thomas. We believe he was born in NC because of two sources: (1) the letter states: Wm is from NC; brother James stayed in NC; brother Thomas left NC to go to AK in the grocery business (we have not been successful in locating James in NC or Thomas in AK); and (2) the Talladega Co., AL Census records show William N. Blanchard b. NC. Related surnames: Hudson, Sumner, Tilden, and maybe Barnes. First names of William and Elizabeth Blanchard's children, which might give a lead to which Blanchard family they descend from: William Thomas, Mary F., John Harrison, Nancy, Franklin B., Jane E., Albert/Elbert B. (might be the same person as Richard Elbert or Uncle Dickie Elbert), Sarah "Sallie" C., George Washington, Rachael. Any thoughts or leads are much appreciated!
