Hi folks! Sorry, I checked my data base and could not locate any connections to the "BLANCHARD" family you are researching. I suspect , from the spelling of the names, that your group is from the "British" side of the house which is very bulky in content. I try to restrict my data base to the French-Acadian side of the house. May I suggest you post your query on the Acadian List ....Acadian-Cajun-L@rootsweb.com and also the Blanchard List.........Blanchard-L@rootsweb.com Good luck with your research!!!! -----Original Message----- From: Graeme & Wynnette Ford <wynngrae@globalfreeway.com.au> To: eblanch@nbnet.nb.ca <eblanch@nbnet.nb.ca> Date: Thursday, June 08, 2000 1:33 AM Subject: BLANCHARD Jotham >Saw your submission in rootsweb. Hello List, I am seeking contact with anyone descended from RICHARD BLANCHARD and ELIZABETH COLLYNS PRIDHAM. The only information I have of these two is that Elizabeth was born 01 August 1799, Topsham, Devon. England and they were married at that venue on 01 August 1822 and that Richard was a Solicitor, practicing I think, in London. Their known children were... Richard Edward BLANCHARD (B) 13 Nov 1823 Topsham, Devon, England Not known if married or to whom.. Henry Pridham BLANCHARD (B) 21 Oct 1829 Winchester, Southampton, England, (D) 19 Jun 1885 Fairfield Terrace, Worcester, Sth East, Christchurch, New Zealand (M) Caroline SHALDERS 10 Oct 1858 Christchurch, New Zealand. I have nearly all of this line. Elizabeth Sophia BLANCHARD (B) 25 Jun 1834 South Stoneham, Hampshire, England. Margaret Lucy BLANCHARD (B) 07 Jul 1836 South Stoneham, Hampshire, England. William Gilbert BLANCHARD (B) 17 Jan 1838 All Saint's, Southampton, Hampshire, England (D) 20 Feb 1876 in Auckland New Zealand. Does any of this lineage appear in anyone's tree? If so please email me. It's a long time since I posted anything to the list, but have two things to say. Firstly I saw Fletch on Saturday at the Blanc/shard FHS annual meeting. He appeared to have recovered from jet lag and was happily taking notes and photographs galore. Also I know there is a big following on the list of Thomas Blanchard and his origins at Goodworth Clatford, England. I wanted to know if anyone has researched the family he left behind. Here is an interesting newspaper cutting: >From the Andover Advertiser Friday, 25 March, 1875 Damaging Underwood Jane Blanchard, wife of Charles Blanchard, of Goodworth Clatford, was summoned by Mr F.R.Loscombe, agent of William Henry Iremonger, esq.,of Wherwell (he was one of the largest landowners in the area at the time) for unlawfully damaging certain underewood growing in Wherwell Wood,on 25th January last. Mr Loscombe deposed:" I am a steward to William Henry Iremonger, esq. On the 25th January last I saw the defendant in Wherwell Wood, which belongs to Mr Iremonmger, with a large bundle of underwood. The underwood was fresh broken off from the stem. I have frequently cautioned the defendant." The defendant admitted the charge, and also that she had twice previously been convicted of a similar offence. She was fined 5/- with 10/6 court costs or in default to go to prison for 14 days with hard labour. She was allowed two weeks to pay the fine. (I do not know if the fine was paid)." Looking for ancestry of both members of this couple: Nicolas Adam b. 12 Oct 1714 in Acadia married to Maria BLANCHARD (no further info). They had a son Augustin Joseph b. 19 Mar 1757 in LaRochelle. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Banks
I'd like to thank all of our members who have sent me good wishes for my visit to England next week. With the help of some of our B-L members in England and members of the Blanc/shard Family History Society, my plans are nearly complete and it should be a most interesting experience. One of my goals is to discover new information about some of our early BLANCHARDs and I will give a full report to B-L. Fletch

Fletch, Have a very wonderful, and lets hope fruitful trip. Give Fred a big hug for me! With the help of several contacts in England, my plans are taking shape. On 19 May, I will meet with Fred Hartley, from Hayes, Middlesex, who has provided much valuable information and guidance in our discussions of the Thomas BLANCHARD family. The next day I will meet Colin Blanshard Withers for our drive to Lincoln and the Annual General Meeting of the BLANC/SHARD Family History Society. I look forward to meeting the Society members and the opportunity to extend greetings from BLANCHARD-L. After a couple of days in the Netherlands with a 'cousin', searching our common Dutch line, I will spend much of the rest of my time at the Hampshire Record Office in Winchester, looking for more BLANCHARDs. Of course, I plan to visit nearby Goodworth Clatford, the earliest known residence of Thomas B. Marshall Blanchard of Wilton, CT, has provided me with a copy of his research of early Blanchard Wills in England and several of our list members have given advice and counsel. I will be checking my e-mail periodically but if any questions arise, I may not be able to respond until I return the end of May. Dear List, Now that I have the easiest parts of my genealogy fairly well researched, I'll start on the hardest, one of which is whether Elizabeth Blanchard was the mother of my second great-grandfather, Reuben Thorp Legg. Reuben's father, Caleb Legg, was born in Mendon, Worcester County, Massachusetts, 16 April 1779, the son of Reuben Legg and Elizabeth Fletcher. He is almost certainly the Caleb Legg who married Elizabeth Blanchard in Leicester, Worcester County, Massachusetts, 9 December 1802 (Vital Records of Leicester, Mass., published by Franklin W. Rice in 1903). Other Blanchards listed in this book include Barnard and Phebe Blanchard who had four children born between 1792 and 1800, and five Blanchard women, including Elizabeth, who married between 1768 and 1802. I don't know if Elizabeth's birthplace is Massachussetts; in the 1880 census, Reuben Thorp Legg gave his mother's birthplace as Connecticutt. Caleb moved to New York State some time after his marriage, settling first in Greene and Herkimer Counties before moving on to the Town of Caroline, Tompkins County. I have not found him in the 1810 census but in 1820, he is listed in Tompkins County with his wife and a boy and girl, both under 10, one of whom is Reuben Thorp Legg, born in 1817. In the 1850 census, Tompkins County, he is listed as living with Elsa, aged 58 (Caleb was 71) whose birthplace is given as Rhode Island. In 1860 and 1865, he lived with Reuben Thorp Legg, dying in 1866 at the age of 87. As his son and daughter were not born until at least ten years after Caleb's marriage to Elizabeth, it may be that Elizabeth died some time in their early marriage and Caleb married a second time. Does anyone on the list know anything of the Leicester Blanchards or have any information on the Elizabeth Blanchard who married Caleb Legg? Any information would be gratefully received. Ruth
Complying with our sysop's request, I am posting here my take on how I am descended from a Blanchard. The resources provided by this maillist already have essentially confirmed what I had from the sources cited below, for which I am grateful. Perhaps my only revision would be to put quotes around "Joseph". For what it may be worth to other readers, I have outlined briefly where this line connects with one of my main lines (my mother's family). Oh yes, I do have blanks as yet for the ancestry of Ruth Adams, Kendall Nichols, Hannah Simonds, and only a bit on Elizabeth Shattuck. If anyone feels the urge, please share what you know.
