    1. [BLANCHARD] Jeremiah Blanchard & Family, Graves
    2. Carol Carnahan
    3. Hello, All: Sue Winter told me of a cemetery listing at Plains, Luzerne Co, PA done by Tammy Lamb. She said: "In your record you list Polly Blanchard (d/o Jeremiah Blanchard, Jr and Martha Hutchins) as married to Jacob Schiff b. 1788, Conrad RI. You also have Jeremiah Jr and Martha as buried at Cooper Cemetery, opposite Wyoming Borough, NY. Polly Blanchard is my 4th GGM, and married Jacob Shiffer, native of PA, about 1810 in Luzerne Co, PA. Jacob is brother to Mary Shiffer, w/o Jacob Blanchard. Jeremiah Jr. and Martha Hutchins are buried in a recently discovered rural graveyard outside Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne, PA. I'll transmit the cemetery listing to you tomorrow. It is believed that the gravesites are located on the once Blanchard Estate. Jacob Shiffer's father, Conrad, is also buried there." Sue and I have about decided that this cemetery is the same one mentioned by Adelaide Blanchard Crandall in her book "Blanchards of Rhode Island" as the "Cooper Cemetery, across from Wyoming Borough, NW." There must have been some error in preparing her book. Anyway, you can see the cemetery transcription at the Luzerne County, PA USGenweb Archives: http://www.rootsweb.com/~paluzern/plainsvle.htm Tammy told Sue she's going to put in a reference to "Cooper Cemetery," to make this site easier to find for those who have read Crandall's book. 1. [BLANCHARD] Quaker Blanchards (Wynette Ford)
    2. The BLANCHARD Quaker connection referred to by Wynette is through Aaron and Ephraim (brothers of Benjamin) who lived in NE North Carolina (formerly Nansemond County, VA). I have seen no evidence that Benjamin was of the Quaker faith. The most likely father of these brothers is Robert Blanshard who received a land grant in nearby VA in 1683. This connection has not been demonstrated conclusively (to me). The Quaker history is best located through HINSHAW's Quaker Genealogy. Decatur Blanchard

    3. Welcome to the List, Edward. I made a quick check of the databases on our web page, but did not find your Elijah among the several that are there. I thought I would take this opportunity to suggest that you make a systematic search of our List Archives to determine if any member has discussed this family, during the past four years that the list has been operating. Elijhah, Edgar, Adelbert and Rhoda are not the most common names and should be good key words to use. The other suggestion, and reminder to all list members, posting your genealogy information to the list not only allows all the members to share this information, but it assures that it will be added to the List Archives at RootsWeb for anyone, members and nonmembers, to access. One more reminder - RootsWeb has been operating their PML (Personalized Mailing Lists) for almost 8 months. List managers who have signed on to PML, can submit "keywords" that are searched in all the List messages posted to the 10s of thousands of surname and regional genealogical mail lists that are served by RootsWeb. Whenever one of these keywords appears, the List manager is notified and receives a copy of the message containing the keyword. "Blanchard" is one of my keywords and I have archived almost all of my PML reports. I would like to share these with our List members but have not found time to organize them and decide which ones might be useful to you. I have tried to write my 'search strings' to weed out the obviously irrelevant 'hits' but still get a lot of messages about Blanchard OK, Blanchard, PA, Blanchard cemeteries, Blanchard as a given or middle name (though this might sometimes be of value), 'Blanchard' in a huge 'signature' list of surnames the poster is searching, etc. Recently, RootsWeb has offered to "Gateway" the PML responses to the Mail Lists - post all the PML notices to an appropriate Mail List rather than to just the manager. This is a good way to generate activity on the Lists, but so far, I have chosen not to set this up, primarily because there are so many messages of questionable value that I would prefer to be the one to suffer the frustration rather than all of you! However, because of PML, when you post a message to BLANCHARD-L, it will be shared with many more List managers/members who may have an interest in the names, places, etc. that are contained in your messages. If you have any thoughts or questions about PML, please let me know. Fletch

    1. [BLANCHARD] Elijah Blanchard 1817-1878
    2. Ed Blanchard
    3. Hi, My name is Edward Blanchard. I live in the upper peninsula of Michigan. My g-g-grandfather was Elijah Blanchard 1817-1878. He was born in either New York or Pennsylvania. He married Rhoda Tyler in 1842 at Bath, New York and moved to Michigan about 1850. They had four children: Charles, Ruth, Adelbert, and Edgar. Charles and Ruth were born in New York. Adelbert and Edgar were born in Michigan. Elijah and Rhoda moved to Mecosta County, Michigan in about 1865 and homesteaded there. I have found an Elijah Blanchard in the census records of New York, but the dates and spouse don't seem to match. I would appreciate any help, I'm at a dead-end. I would also be glad to share any information I have after they arrived in Michigan. I have quite a bit of information on the four children. a

    1. [BLANCHARD] Ella and Emma Blanchard
    2. Fletcher Blanchard
    3. Brenda Caldwell inquired about Ella and Emma Blanchard who were born July 4,1865, possibly in Roxbury, VT or Ogdensburg, NY. A quick check of our web page databases did not find either of them. I suggest a search of our BLANCHARD-L archives for each of the four years we have been in operation. In addition to checking NY and VT Census Records, some queries submitted to the county GenWeb Pages (Washington Co. for Roxbury, VT and St. Lawrence Co. for Ogdensburg, NY) might be worthwhile. The NYGenWeb Page is http://www.rootsweb.com/~nygenweb/ The VTGenWeb Page is http://www.rootsquest.com/~usgwvtus/ Start with the State pages and locate the county (counties) of interest. Both of these counties have Mail Lists hosted by RootsWeb, VTWASHIN-L and NYSTLAWR-L. I don't know how active these two lists are but many of the county lists are a great source of information and are monitored by some very knowledgeable and helpful people. If you are not familiar with mail lists, those at RootsWeb are 'closed' which simply means that you must subscribe in order to post messages. The procedure is simple, send e-mail to the "request address"; for example, to subscribe to the Washington Co., VT Mail List, send an e-mail message to: VTWASHIN-L-request@rootsweb.com with the word subscribe in the message Subject: and body, nothing more. You will receive confirmation of your subscription and information about how the list operates. ________ I thought this was a good opportunity to remind list members of some of the ways to focus their attempts to locate genealogical information. I have a possible match, but the age is a little bit of a stretch. There was a Hannah Reed of Scituate, Mass who married David Blanchard of Abington on 1816 Aug 1 at Abington. If she is the same Hannah that shows up in the census in Madison, then she was either fibbing about her age in 1850 or was very young to be marrying in 1816. There are scads of David Blanchards who were born in the 1790's in New England, but I don't know of one in particular who would have been living in Abington in 1816 and then moved to Maine. I have also looked around for a Hannah Reed born in the Scituate area in the 1790's and didn't come across one. Maybe if I changed the time range to include 1800 and 1801 I might find someone, but the marriage and the intention filed at Scituate are all I have at the moment. John

    3. Subject: BLANCHARD/CURRIE/WEEDON/MEREDITH/SHEPHERD Any Australian descendants out there for these families? Have gone almost as far as I can go. I am in contact with relatives of their ancestors' overseas. BLANCHARD's were French Huguenots. Fled to England. Emigrated to Boston, Mass., (USA) in 1637. From there to New Hampshire and on to Nova Scotia, (Canada). WILLIAM EARLE BLANCHARD & wife ELLEN CURRIE/CURRY came to Victoria, Australia circa 1850s, & lived at EMERALD HILL "Tent City" at South Melbourne for a while. Most of the family seems then to have gone to settle in Sydney, New South Wales area. Son JOTHAM BLANCHARD went to Queensland. Married LIZZIE WEEDON born Warwickshire, England in 1868. Settled in MARYBOROUGH Queensland, area. His son SAMUEL THOMAS (TOM) BLANCHARD, married PHOEBE ELIZABETH MEREDITH/MERIDETH in 1902. Phoebe's parents were EDWIN MEREDITH & ELIZABETH SHEPHERD. Both from Staffordshire in England, married Shropshire, England, 1862. Have never found either family's shipping record into Australia. Be glad to hear from any descendant and swap information. 3. Hello Wynnette. Nice to hear from you again and welcome to the list. I still have not made much head way with the New Brunswick search other than what I obtained recently off of the Net. For the interest of other members, William Earle Blanchard, born Truro, Nova Scotia, was a grandson of Col Jotham Blanchard who came to Nova Scotia from New Hamsphire about 1785. According to the online 1851 census of Northumberland County, New Brunswick, there were six Blanchard families in the Chatham parish. In the same county, there were ten Currie families in the Newcastle parish, twelve Curry families in what appears to be the Northesk parish, and four Curry families in the Chatham parish. I did not find any 'marriage record' there for William Earle B., but there were two Currie females married, Margaret, of Bathurst/Chatham area who married on Nov. 1, 1836 to Thomas BALDWIN, and the other being Jane, of Newcastle, who married on April 4, 1837, Robert STEWART. Miller's book had stated William moved to Miramichi, New Bruswick, and married Eleanor CURRY. They later removed to Australia. At first, I had thought William had left for Australia after the 1825 fire in the Miramichi area which damaged over 6,000 square miles of land. This fire was fanned on by a hurricane and destroyed about 15,000 homes. So as some of you can see, I was delighted when I got my first e-mail from Wynnette with myself having barely anything to go on. Also, I have in my notes that New Brunswick became a separate province in 1784 and in 1848 Great Britain granted 'almost' complete control over its own affairs.
