He was the first to person cross the English Channel in a balloon (in 1785.) He also may have made the first balloon flights in America. I have no idea what the genealogical connection of Jean Pierre is to all the American Blanchards. Maybe somebody else knows? If you ever have a chance to visit the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington, check out the puppet-show depiction of the Channel crossing. It's quite amusing. Jim Blanchard Ellicott City MD

    3. I don't know if this will have any meaning for any of you Blanchard searchers, and perhaps you already have information on Claude Blanchard, but I found the following in a volume by Mary Ellen Loughrey, FRANCE AND RHODE ISLAND, 1686-1800, New York: Morningside Heights, Kings Crown Press, 1944. Loughrey discusses all of the early French influences in RI, including that of the French who assisted in the American Revolution. On page 121-2 is recorded the following: "One of the most comprehensive journals was that of Claude Blanchard, the commissary in chief of the French army. It covered practically every subject imaginable---food, money, climate, products of the soil---even a picnic at which a three-hundred pound turtle was the piece de resistance. Blanchard was not favorably impressed by Rhode Island weather. . . . Blanchard's work as commissary took him frequently to Providence, which city he preferred to Newport, although he considered the latter 'small, but handsome'. Providence, however, seemed 'more lively, more addicted to commerce, more supplies are to be found there." "With regard to the people, Blanchard declared: 'We live on good terms with the inhabitants. . . . They are affable, well clad, very cleanly, and all tall. The women enjoy the same advantages, have fair skins, and are generally pretty. . . . Americans are slow and do not decide promptly in matters of business. . . . They love money and hard money. . . . In many of the houses there are carpets also, even upon their stairs. In general, the houses are very pleasant, and kept with extreme neatness. . . . Their education is very nearly the same; so that a merchant is often called to their assemblies, where there is no distinction'. . . ." For the above material she lists the source as: Blanchard, Claude. Journal of Claude Blanchard, Commissary of the French Auxiliary Army sent to the United States during the American Revolution, 1780-1783. Translated by William Duane. Edited by Thomas Balch. Albany: J. Munsell, 1876. Pp. 207. In an earlier chapter on pages 63-4 Loughrey discussed matters of a scientific nature which were printed from time to time. There was mention of Montgolfier's balloon flights in Paris, and also flights by Messieurs Charles and Robert. In addition, "In the (Newport) Mercury of May 8 appeared an account of an experiment by M. Blanchard with a balloon ascension, and the issue of September 4 published a description of his second trip in a 'batteau volant'. The Providence Gazette of November 27, 1784, printed a translation of M. Blanchard's observations during his third 'aerial voyage'." In this instance she does not report Blanchard's first name. I wonder if it was Claude, referred to above, or perhaps another of the early Blanchards, but one whose words needed to be translated. These flights are presumed to have occurred in Rhode Island. Forgive me if this is of no interest, but I am still trying to get information on the RI Blanchards. P.S. I have just looked at the index of the book again and Loughrey does not list this second Blanchard under the listings for Claude. I presume him to be a different person, but his first name is not given. The initial M. I would guess stand for Messieur and I will so list him in the index line. Index: Claude 1780-81 RI 1997 11 09 Messieur 1784 RI 1997 11 09 Sincerely, Bob Letson Tucson, AZ

    3. Hi John and All, I have wondered what became of Nathaniel, b 9/12/1705 in Dunstable? The census shows a Nathaniel in Dunstable, NH in both 1790 and 1800, and I feel sure that was the Nathaniel who married Sarah Butterfield there in 1792 and had sons Simon, Nathaniel, and Jonathan between then and 1800, as shown in the first book of Dunstable vital records and as indicated in the 1800 census. There are two questions, though: who was the female living with Nathaniel in 1790 (and was perhaps still there in 1800, aged 16-26), and how does this Nathaniel fit into the grand scheme of Blanchards? The only unaccounted-for Nathaniel I've found in the right age group was the son of Nathaniel and Elizabeth, baptized in Roxbury, MA in 1769, and I don't know the father of that Nathaniel Sr either. Question: was this list of Nathaniels a complete sample of Nathaniel births in the NH state records up to 1800 or some such date? Or was it just a selection? Incidentally, those births in Dunstable are all included in the published vital records of Dunstable, Mass (with the notation "N.R.", meaning "1st book of vital records at city hall in Nashua, NH"). I presume the NH state archives also copied their records from the same source. John

    3. Hi John and All, I'm losing power in this storm and just lost all my documentation on this guy. I was on the last three indexes!! I'll post a brief note about him now and get it off before I lose power again. Jeremiah was born 6/1733 in Andover, MA to Joseph (Thomas, Samuel, Thomas) and Sarah (dau of Nathaniel Abbot of Andover) Blanchard, (Andover VR's) He married Dorothy SMITH 5/17/1759 and Susanna MARTIN 8/?/1772 (Andover VR's). Children born Andover to Jeremiah and Dorothy, (Andover VR's): Jeremiah 10/10/1759 Peter 8/12/1767 Eber 1/14/1769 Wilton History (pp 318-319) gives the following children stating the last five births are recorded in Wilton: Jeremiah 9/17/1761 Peter 8/12/1767 Eber 1/14/1769 Sarah 11/2/1774 Dolly, or Dorothy 11/2/1776 Judith 10/15/1778 Henry 3/30/1781 John 11/26/1782 Hannah 3/27/1785 William 2/10/1778 Aaron 7/20/1791 Sarah, Dolly, or Dorothy, Judith, Henry are all listed in the Andover VR for bp dates to Jeremiah only. The last four are not listed in Andover. Wilton History tells that Jeremiah and s Jeremiah served in the Rev War and the elder "served in the French and Indian war, was at the siege of Fort William Henry, taken prisoner and escaped." As a matter of fact, I did, and rejected him, though on insufficient evidence it seems... > The "History of Wilton, N.H." ... > The births of his five youngest children are recorded in Wilton. This is the interesting part. I had gotten the information on Jeremiah's later children from an article in the Essex Antiquarian, which was a bit vague about locations, though its focus was on events in Andover. There was a notation that child #7 Henry was born in Wilton, but there were a number of people who moved north only to return to Andover, so I assumed the lack of further notations of birthplace meant this Jeremiah had done that as well. Indeed, I have tentatively identified Henry as marrying Polly Crosby in Billerica in 1807, with intention declared in Andover. If Jeremiah actually stayed in Wilton, then the census mystery is solved. Thanks! (Of course, that leaves a new mystery of why Henry then moved back to Andover...) > 6. Judith, b. Oct. 15, 1778; m. Benjamin Steele. See Steele gen. This is suspect. She was baptized on 1779 Jun 13 in the South Parish of Andover, and the Essex Ant. article says she was born that Jun 2. For events in Andover, I figure that article is more likely to be correct than the History of Wilton. Suffice it to say, though, that the Andover VR do not show that birth. John Chandler

I have nothing against New England (even though I am a southerner), it is just that my BLANCHARD's came from North Carolina and stayed primarily there and in Texas My immigrant (great grandfather) was John L.BLANCHARD (born 1823, Abingdon ENGLAND; died August 9, 1885, Woodville, Perquiman Co.NC). He came to the northeast part of North Carolina circ.1850. He married 1st (or maybe 2nd) February 9, 1954, Lucy Ann (STOKES) MORGAN, a widow, (born August 25, 1827, Pasquotank Co.NC; died November 22, 1900, Woodville, Perquiman Co.NC). John L.BANCHARD may have been married earlier to a GOODENOUGH, but I can find no records. This mariage may have happened in England before his emigration, or after his arrival in America. He may have had a daughter, Nannie, by the "1st" marriage. He may have also immigrated earlier to the Baltimore MD area with a brother. Lots of mays. I do know all of his family with Lucy Ann STOKES. I have a nearly complete detailed listing of all his descendants to current date. I won't list all these details here, but will give his children's names and spouses. But Kathie got in touch and we are corresponding. > John is a descendant of Hollis BLANCHARD (1839-1898) Nope, I am a great grand nephew of Hollis BLANCHARD. But this gives me an excuse to run my write up on his tragedy. The tragedy of the steamer Portland Hollis H. Blanchard, captain of the ill fated sidewheeler steamship Portland, is a Great Grand Uncle of John Chandler Clement. The steamer he commanded was destroyed by the legendary gale that claimed more than four hundred vessels off the New England coast. The 1898 storm was remembered as the Portland Gale because of the great loss of life from the Portland. Before commanding the Portland, Blanchard captained the Schooner Mary A. Coombs, Brigantine R.S. Hassel, Steamship William Tibbetts and a number of coasters and vessels in the West Indies trade. Like a child's game of telephone, a story told over and over, grows less and less trustworthy. For that reason, there are conflicting accounts of what happened Saturday, 26 November 1898; even Captain Blanchard's name changes from Hollis to Horace on occasion. However, in the December 1989 issue of Yankee Magazine, Susan V. Seligson accumulated what she calls the least-shakable details. The Portland, a wooden-hulled sidewheeler, 281 feet long with a 42-foot beam sailed from Boston bound for Portland, Maine on Saturday at 7:20pm. Though the day began fair with a light west wind, by late afternoon several storm warnings were issued and sky was overspread with a yellow light, similar to that seen before the hurricane of 1938. Whether Captain Blanchard was advised by a superior not to sail that day remains in dispute. At the mouth of Boston harbor, a keeper of a light house waved to the Portland passengers and remarked to his wife, "There will be many seasick people about that ship tonight." As the Portland turned toward the open sea, she exchanged whistle signals with the Kennebec, which had sailed earlier but was returning to the shelter of the harbor. The sky was then overcast with a fresh northeast wind blowing and soon thereafter snow commenced to fall. After the Kennebec, the Mt. Desert entered the harbor with the occupants of the pilot house looking astern expecting the Portland to come about, but she continued seaward. At about 11:00pm, the Portland was seen by the schooner Grayling and the Grayling Captain reported the Portland was rolling and pitching badly. Despite her 1,400 horsepower engine, the Portland was still only about fifteen miles southeast of Gloucester when she was seen again at 11:45pm; the captain of the vessel sighting her reported she was damaged and without lights. What happened after that is unknown, but the following afternoon, the Portland's grim debris began washing up along the Outer Cape. Later in the evening, patrolmen came upon great masses of broken beams, furniture, barrels of freight and several bodies. Conflicting reports say 60, 38 and 35 bodies were found. In any event, there were no survivors among the estimated 160 to 191 passengers and crew. Using advance technology, the hulk of the Portland was discovered in 1989, ninety-one years after she went down, twenty miles north of Cape Cod in 300 feet of water. The History of Weymouth says this James settled in Quebec. Also, a message I just got from Pauline Blanchard gives the death of James Moulton Blanchard as 1868 Mar 23 (age 83y2m27d) in Sinclairville, NY. By my calculation, that makes his birth date 1784 Dec 25. John Index: James Moulton 1868 d Sinclairville, ChatauquaCo, NY 1997 11 12
