Hi Rannie and All, I have just reviewed the History of Peterborough, NH (the location of my birth) to be certain that it was never known as Petersboro, and it was not. In addition I consulted a map done in 1791 by Jeremy Belknap and the 1761 map done by Joseph Blanchard, both of which confirm the name of Peterborough. It is sometimes now shortened to Peterboro, (as Hillsborough is Hillsboro) but I find no evidence of Petersboro. The history gives an account of Jotham being a prominent man in town affairs for the years and offices you mention. It then states that he mysteriously disappears without a trace from evidence or tradition. The account gives no information on his family, though it is in the genealogy section. The historian is baffled by the lack of information of his roots or wings. This history, as with several of the adjoining towns (see Lyndeborough, Hollis and Wilton Histories), discusses the anger of the residents at the boundary changes effected by Joseph Blanchards survey's, conducted with the authority of the government. Changes made appear to have benefited the Masonian proprietors to the detriment of the original proprietors and settlers. Regarding Peterborough in particular the changes took the center of town away from the Contookook River, an important consideration in those days. The original settlers were primarily of Scottish Irish, Presbyterian descent. In the accounts of several towns it is clearly mentioned that Blanchard family members then received choice allotments in the newly defined townships. This must have been an uncomfortable position to hold and I can not help but wonder if it added to the difficulties you discussed regarding the Legislative matters around land confiscation due to loyalties during the revolutionary times. Am I correct in understanding that Joseph the surveyor was Jotham's brother? Forgive me as I digress some, (my community psychology training is kicking in here), but I find it an interesting note that the history documents the lack of Indigenous People attacking Peterborough the way they did other frontier settlements. Having just worked with other Abenaki's to form the NH Abenaki Nation, it is interesting to note that Mount Monadnock was and is considered a very sacred place to the People. I have no doubt this explains the lack of warfare conducted there. Sherry Index: Joseph. 1761. NH 1997 . 11. 22. Index: Jotham. 1774 res. Peterborough, NH. 1997 . 11. 22.
Hello John. This is taken from my first pages of my NS research. If any error(s) appear let me know and a reference to quote. -Rannie ----- JOTHAM BLANCHARD (1744 - 18 MAR 1807), the tenth child of Colonel JOSEPH and REBECCA (HUBBARD) BLANCHARD, was born at Dunstable and died at Truro, Nova Scotia. He married at Middleton, Mass., on NOV 10, 1766, ELIZABETH TREADWELL (1738 - 05 JAN 1811). This TREADWELL family began with THOMAS TREADWELL and his wife, the former MARY TAYLOR, each aged thirty years, and with a son, THOMAS, aged one year, emigrated from London, in the "Hopewell" in July 1635. They purchased land in Dorchester, Mass. in 1637, sold it, and in 1638 were residing in Ipswich, Mass. Their third child, NATHANIEL (13 MAR 1637(8) - ), married his first wife, ABIGAIL, daughter of THOMAS and ABIGAIL (WARNER) WELLS. The seventh child of NATHANIEL and ABIGAIL was also named NATHANIEL (13 JUNE 1677 - 17 AUG 1723). The first child of this second NATHANIEL and his wife, HANNAH --?--, was JACOB (24 JAN 1699 - ), who married in 1721, SARAH, daughter of WILLIAM and ANNA (CARTER) COTTON, Jr. The second child of JACOB and SARAH was ELIZABETH who, as stated, married Colonel JOTHAM BLANCHARD. Colonel JOTHAM BLANCHARD, as well as his brother, JONATHAN, lived in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where the four of his children were baptised, until 1773, when JOTHAM removed to Petersboro, N.H. He was then styled Captain. He was active and prominent in Town affairs, was Moderator during 1774, 1776, 1777, 1778, 1780, 1781, and a Selectman for 1777, 1778, 1779, 1780, and 1781. He had signed in Petersboro, 1776, the Association Test pledging life and property in defence of the Revolution. He was a Representative of the New Hampshire House of Representatives, representing Petersboro and Temple for the legislative term beginning in December 1777. He attended all Sessions of the year, and occupied a prominet position, serving on many important Committees. He served on the Committee with JOHN WENTWORTH of Somerswont and SAMUEL CUTTS of Portsmouth in the preparation of the historic Act of Confiscation of estates and proscription of Tories. This Committee was to decide upon what action should be taken with regard to those who had not been active in the cause of the Revolution. Their report was resonable and moderate recommendation that those who had been active on the side of the British should be proceeded against, and their land confiscated, while no action should be taken against those who had been strictly neutral. JOTHAM, becoming more discontented with the cries of these carpetbaggers, and their disability to set the past behind them and moving onward, sold his property in Petersboro and moved to Truro, in the British province of Nova Scotia, in 1785. JOTHAM was commissioned a Colonel. JOTHAM was the recipient of Grants of Land of 200,000 acres, in what were the Counties of Sydney and Halifax, which, at the present time, are the Counties of Pictou and Antigonish. Failing to get settlers he hoped for the area, the grant was reduced to 23,000 acres on April 19 1796. JOTHAM never lived in either County, but his son, JONATHAN, lived in Pictou, and his son-in-law, NATHANIEL SYMONDS, settled in Antigonish in 1804. In the House of Assembly, on March 30 1790, the petiton of JOTHAM BLANCHARD was considered and resolved, the sum of fifteen pounds to be granted and paid the petitioner, as a bounty on three tons of potash manufactured and shipped by him in 1788, in a vessel called the "Truro". JOTHAM and ELIZABETH are both buried in Truro Cemetery, Truro, NS. JOTHAM and ELIZABETH had eight children, two of whom never came to Nova Scotia and one who came after Jotham had. 1. JOHN (1767 - ) Never came to Nova Scotia. 2. SARAH (1768 - ) Married JACOB LIPPENCUTT. 3. ELIZABETH (1770 - 1808) Married Dec 29 1791, NATHANIEL SYMONDS 4. It is said that the new name was suggested by the late DONALD CHISHOLM, father of the late C.P. CHISHOLM (1854 - 1934) M.L.C. 1916 - 1928. The original name of the district rose from the fact that the first settlers were from New Hampshire. In April 1796, JOTHAM BLANCHARD, New Hampshire, received a grant of 23,000 acres at the foot of the present Brown's Mountain. A few years later, two other New Hampshire men, ROBERT CAMPBELL and MOSES TOWNS, with their families, started clearing farms out of the woods in the grant." Index: Joseph. 1997 . 11. 21. Karen wrote: >There were 2 other stones I could read: "Aaron Blanchard, born in Monson, Mass. > Nov. 6, 1795, died Feb. 13, 1880" There were two Blanchard families in Monson at that time: Chester and Jonathan. Both were listed in the 1800 census for Monson, Chester with two sons under 10 and Jonathan with one. The chances are good that this Aaron was the son of one of these, but I can't say which. I would guess, too, that Chester and Jonathan might have been brothers and that their father was the Jonathan Sr also listed in the 1800 census at Monson. There is a small cemetary on my father's farm in rural Harpersfield, Ohio (Ashtabula County) with a few Blanchard markers. The main monument is so badly weathered I could only read a name on one side - "Abigail Blanchard". Maybe I can do a rubbing in better weather for more information; there appeared to be writing on 3 sides. There were 2 other stones I could read: "Aaron Blanchard, born in Monson, Mass. Nov. 6, 1795, died Feb. 13, 1880" and "Andrew P. Blanchard 1848 - 1896". Hope this helps someone. Sherry asked what happened to Nathaniel B., b. 9-12-1705. My records show that he died before 1709 (I don't know the source at the moment). I also found this note about his father, "Nathaniel, his wife Lydia, daughter Susannah, his mother Hannah Brackett and her daughter by a previous marriage, Elizabet Kingsley Cummins and several soldiers were all killed by indians. Five others were wounded before the indians were driven out of the house, one indian was killed. Nathaniel was the son of Deacon John and Hannah Brackett. Paul
I notice in the census that there was a John Blanchard listed in Concord, NH in both 1790 and 1800. The family structure is a little tricky: the 1800 tally is 21011-10110, and 1790 is 212--, which leads me to guess that John was born 1750 or earlier, had a son c1773, dau c1777, son c1784, and then three more children 1790-1800. There were presumably others filling in those gaps, but who died before 1790. His wife as of 1800 could have been the mother of all the children if she was born close to 1755. Does anybody know who these folks were? For example, I have a record of a John born 1743 Jul 24 in Billerica, but no further info. I have just sent another message to RootsWeb asking if we will be able to retrieve messages from the new Archives, based on the group (day, week, quarter) identifications for the old MAISER messages and the individual (latest/xx) identification for RootsWeb messages. An answer will help us decide the future of Index-Lines. In the meantime, please continue to supply Lines with your messages, according to the Guidelines that you all have received. I don't want to make a big issue about this, especially if it turns out that we will be unable to access messages based on the Index-Lines database, but if we will have this capability, we should all help to make the database as complete as possible. An updated Index-Lines file through 11/16/1997 is available as an attachment, either the full file or as a zipped file. If any members (AOL?) are still having problems reading the attached file, let me know and I will try to get more help on this. Have John Tuttle's suggestions, posted 10/6/1997 in latest/198, helped any of you AOL users? Fletch
I am in the process of trying to understand the status of the archives and search procedures at RootsWeb. There has been considerable discussion about the pros and cons of having the archives accessible from a web page rather than via e-mail. RootsWeb intends to go with the web page and toward that end, they have set up a demonstration page at: http://searches.rootsweb.com/example.html Here you will find eight lists that you can play with. This page will only be active for a short time, or possibly until all the 2000+ lists are available (target date is 1 December 1997).. You can do single word searches or combinations using 'boolean operators'. Examples of these are: enter: Ebenezer & Avery if you want to locate all posts to a particular list that have both words, Ebenezer <and> Avery; enter Blanchard | Saratoga if you want posts with the word Blanchard <or> the word Saratoga; etc. As soon as a complete set of instructions for searching the Archives is available, I will report it to our List. Here is a summary of information received from Karen Isaacson at RootsWeb and a few other sources, through 16 Nov 1997, along with my personal comments. 1. Archives for the 2000+ lists have been moved from the 'lists' server to the 'searches' server and are being indexed. Once the new web-based system is on line, the old (e-mail based) system will be turned off. <All> list archives are available from RootsWeb to any listowner who wants to set up their own FTP site. I'm disappointed about this decision since some of you may not have ready web access and we will have to come up with some plan for you to be able to intereact with the Archives. I also have a complete set of message files (hard copy, as well) which are available in an emergency. 2. Any List can choose not to have their archives indexed and available on the web site. BLANCHARD-L <will request> that our Archives be assigned a web site and each participating List will have its own site. 3. After considerable discussion about password pros and cons, RootsWeb, at least for now, has decided that no passwords will be required to access an Archive web page. 4. Here is Karen's description of the appearance of the page returned by a search of the Archives, "if a 'hit' is on a message sent while the list was at RootsWeb, only that message will be displayed. If the 'hit' is on a message sent while the list was at MAISER [our old server, prior to about 3 May 1997], the entire file (such as a weekly archive) is returned and you'll need to use the "find" feature of your web browser to hone in on the message you want. I intend converting the format of these files so that only the matching message is returned, but it may be awhile, and I thought too much was better than none at all, in the meantime." 5. Another parallel but related archive effort has been pursued by Marc Nozell, whom some of you probably know. My understanding is that this archive will be for current "threaded" messages and will allow you to follow a message backward and forward. The RootsWeb Archive web pages will offer access to all the archived files (RootsWeb and MAISER), and a link to Marc's archive of more recent, threaded messages. 6. RootsWeb listowners will have no editing capability for their Archives, at least for now. Any cases of "egregious copyright violation", grossly inappropriate messages, spam, etc. will have to be manually removed at RootsWeb but Karen and Brian are not encouraging these requests. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ I still do not see how our Index-Lines Database fits into the new archive plan, if at all. Nothing suggests that we will be able to retrieve specific messages, based on our Index-Line identification system. If you have a different or better understanding of the new archives procedures, I would appreciate your input. I will try one last time to get a reply to my personal e-mail to Brian at RootsWeb. I need information about the children of Isaac S. Blanchard listed in the 1860 census in Cocke Co., TN and the children of Stephen Blanchard listed inthe same census in Benton Co, TN. Isaac was also listed as "Blanchet" in the 1850 census in Cocke Co, Tn. I am particularly looking for a William S. Blanchard (b. Jun 1851, Tn). I am really deadlocked with William S. and would greatly appreciate any help. Beryl index: Isaac S. 1860 Cocke Co., TN 1997 11 18 index: Stephen 1860 Benton Co. Hello to the Group. I have found a 'Certificate of Merit in Genealogy' made out to H. Percy Blanchard, the date seems to be Dec 29, 1938. It reads: 'In Recognition of Original Research and a meritous Contribution to the Archives of American Genealogy. Awarded by The Institute of American Genealogy, the National Clearing House for Genealogical Information, Chicago, Illinois.' The signature of the President is hard to make out, it appears to be F. A. Vickers(?) and the signature of the Secretary is M. R. Ferris. Would anyone know just what this institute was? Has it changed its' name to something else? Any info may be helpful to understand just what was involved, assumed to be his McCurdy research. Under 12" of new snow, digging the driveway as well as the past - Rannie.
There is a Richard Blanchard who appears in Northfield, NH, both in 1790 and 1800. It appears that he and his wife were both born before 1755, and they had a goodly number of children, and maybe even a grandchild living with them by 1800 (but that's just speculation). Does anybody know who he was? It seems quite possible that he was the same Richard who appeared in the Canterbury tax lists in 1770, which would push his birth back before 1750 or so. (Bear in mind that Northfield was set off from Canterbury in 1780.) That still leaves open the question of who he was... John
Here is a list of all the Blanchard households in the 1790 census for Rhode Island. The tally columns are: 1. free white males >16, 2. ditto <16, 3. free white females, 4. other free, 5. slaves. I hope this is of use to somebody. For comparison, I note that the 1782 Rhode Island census showed only 3 Blanchard families: Moses and Samuel in Coventry and Benjamin in Cranston. I believe the latter wound up in Coventry in 1790, but it's hard to be sure. In any case, that's not much overlap for two censuses taken only 8 years apart. In the 1 March 1939 Denver Post, Ripley's Believe it or Not featured Captain BLANCHARD "had seven sons who were sea captains and all sevens sons were lost a sea - each son went down with his ship." Ripley's was a syndicated cartoon, and probably appeared simultaneously in other newspapers. Ripley explains further, quote: The father of captains - James BLANCHARD, Maine shipbuilder, was the father of (1) William H., (2) Raymond, (3) Jubilee, (4) Elbridge, (5) Lock, (6) James, (7) Shepard. All seven sons were ship captains and all were lost at sea. Of his four grandsons, who were likewise ship captains, one Fred P. BLANCHARD, was also lost at sea. Numerous other bearers of the BLANCHARD name were shipmasters, being more distantly related to the subject of my cartoon. Unquote. Ripley didn't get it exactly correct. According to "Ancestors and Descendants of James Blanchard, Jr., Thomas Shute Blanchard, Shepard Blanchard" by William H. Pendleton [Searsport, Maine : W.H. Pendleton, 1983]: Captain James BLANCHARD (1798-1859) was a ship carpenter and a master ship builder; he was also a part time farmer according to the Searsport, Maine tax records. Pendleton believes it is true that seven sons were lost at sea but he can only document six -- and they were not all shipmasters when they went down. 1. Raymond Smith BLANCHARD, lost at sea 1863 as first mate on the bark Sarah A Nichols. 2. William Houston BLANCHARD. As a retired Captain, he took a voyage with his son Captain Frederick P. BLANCHARD. The bark Willard Mudgett left Norfolk, Virginia on 10 Sep 1904 and was never heard from again. 3. John Clifford BLANCHARD died at sea on the ship Wachusetts, 10 Dec 1879. 4. Elbridge Gerry BLANCHARD was lost at sea 1877/88 while in command of the ship B.F. Metcalf. 5. Jonathan Locke BLANCHARD was lost at sea in 1866 as first mate on the ship Bosphorus. 6. James Mossman BLANCHARD was lost with wife and child on the bark Travatore, 6 Dec 1870. 7. Edward Payson BLANCHARD is believed to be have been lost at sea in 1867. Sharing this info in case it might help someone. Just found and bought a 1977 reprint of "One Hundred and Sixty Allied Families" by John Osborne Austin (1893) - at a used book sale at Chicago's Newberry Library.
