I came across several mentions of Blanchards in the publication "New England Vital Records from the Exeter, N.H., News-Letter 1831-1840." Perhaps they will be of help to someone. Hi to all, I have been lurking in the background for the last 9 months learning all I can, and there is much to learn. This list is fortunate to have exceptionally knowledgeable contributors. I would like to first thank Rannie for his guidance, I was up that tree but didnt know which branch my twig belonged on. Sherry for her relentless digging and sharing I have enjoyed immensely, and Chandler for his patience, he never forgets that many of us are new to genealogy, computers and to Internet, his explanations and accuracy, especially those funny dates have helped me a great deal. Now for the questions. How do you keep all this data straight, what program, do you use? I desperately need some type of system for organizing everything. I have some in MS Word, some in Excel, some (direct lines) in family tree maker. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I would also be interested in any information on Amos Blanchard (the Andover schoolmaster, whose house is now the museum of Andover Historical Society) and his brothers and sisters, I believe two of his brothers John and Aaron came to Greenbush, Leeds County Ont. in 1800 Thanks to all the contributors for making this list interesting and fun. Fletch, hope you had a good holiday. I found this query while surfing the Net among Family Finders as Ad #7743 placed by Gale Billard. ------- BLANCH, Thomas What I know: Born: 1834 in England Married: in England Spouse: Marfell, Mary Ann Children: Enoch Blanch, Elizabeth "Lizzie" Blanch Other Information: Mary Ann Marfell born in 1828. Enoch was born in Gloucestershire, England in 1859. He imigrated to the USA in 1878. Enoch died in Peru, LaSalle County,IL in 1949. I think that Thomas' father was Cornelius Blanch and mother Esther, but I am not sure of this. What I would like to find out: Is anyone doing research on the Blanch line? I would like to prove the parents of Thomas (Cornelius & Esther ?) and go back another generation. Any Info appreciated. (9) Jotham, b. in 1784, and was about one year old when his parents removed to Nova Scotia. He settled at Pictou, N.S.; was a lawyer, who was "notable for discouraging litigation." He represented the county of Halifax in the Provincial Parliament in 1830, Pictou at that time being included in Halifax County. Mr. Blanchard while travelling in Scotland, married the widow Margaret Spears, a native of Scotland. Mr. Blanchard established in Pictou, the Colonial Patriot, which newspaper issued its first number on Dec. 7, 1827. His paper was too liberal for the times, and he was burned in effigy. Among those who attacked Mr. Blanchard most bitterly was Hon. Joseph Howe, in his paper, The Nova Scotia. "But the controversy helped to clear his (Howe's) mind as to the true principal of popular government." (See "Canada and Its Provinces," Vol. 13, pp. 276-277). F. E. Crowell Boston, Mass. ------------------------------- That's the article. I found some parts hard to follow as to who was whose child in the latter part but I guess that is "genealogy" talking. Myself I noted some new information as well as that some of the children were not mentioned. I also could see errors, such as: 1- The family of (7) Edward Sherburne consisted of twelve children, the twelfth being his son, William Henry, (my line) isn't there. 2- The above (9) Jotham was not a son of Jotham, but a grandson, being the son of (6) Jonathan whose name was spelled wrong. 3- (8) Nancy married Rev John Waddell not 'Joseph' 4- The name Wallenhaupt should have been spelled with an 'o', Wollenhaupt 5- (7) Edward Sherburne's wife has always been noted as Jean and sometimes Jane. This is the first I have seen it as Janet. 6- (6) Jonathan's wife's surname shown as Coggin has always been noted as Goggin. 7- The wife of James Fleming, son of (6) Jonathan, is surnamed Johnson where I have it as Johnstone 8- (2) Sarah's husband has been noted as Lipencutt, Lipencott, and either of these with a double 'p'. 9- (9) Jotham, Jonathan's son, never married Mrs. Spears in Scotland but in Nova Scotia. They met in Scotland after Jotham fell ill and she nursed him. After his return to Nova Scotia, his father went to bring Margaret to Nova Scotia. -- Rannie Index: John. 1767/8. This message is 3/4 of col. 4 in the article in 'The Yarmouth Herald', Vol. 96, on Tuesday November 20, 1928, pg 4, col. 3, 4, and 5, written by F. E. Crowell, of Boston, Mass. I shall post the remainder later. It deals with the children of Jotham and Elizabeth Blanchard and I noticed some errors. NEW ENGLANDERS IN NOVA SCOTIA (cont'd) ----- Jotham (4) Blanchard (Joseph 3, Joseph 2, John 1) b. in Dunstable, 1744-5. he removed from Dunstable to Portsmouth, N.H. where he was a captain in the Colonel Militia; removed in 1773 to Peterborough, N.H. where he took an active part in public affairs. He was moderator six years and a selectman five years. He was elected a representative for the year 1778, and was one of the most prominent members of the session of that year. The History of Peterborough says --"Jotham Blanchard -- This is almost the only notice we have been able to make of this individual aside from the town records. We know nothing of his family, or his antecedents, or the man any further than is recorded in the town records. He was a selectman in 1777, '78, '79; and moderator in 1776, '77, '78, '80, ' 81. He was elected a representative to a Convention held in 1783. With all these offices and honors of the town, not the least trace of him has been received in relation to him, as to where he came from, the time he first appeared, or whether he had a family or what became of him after 1783, when he disappeared." -- On March 5, 1778, Jotham Blanchard of Peterboro', was one of a committee of three to draft an act of prescription and confiscation of estates of Tories. He was one of the committee of safety in 1776, and the same year he joined the patriots of Peterboro', in signing the association test, pledging property and life in support of the Revolution. Sabine overlooked the record of Mr. Blanchard, misstates his residence, and erroneously says he "served in a Loyalist corps." -- Jotham Blanchard at the close of the war "was not in sympathy with the provisions of the State Constitution, adopted in 1783," and of which he was a member. His frequent election to office and appointments given him is certain proof he was never suspected of being a Loyalist. His Brother-in- law, Rev. Joshua Wingate Weeks of Nova Scotia, and his old friend of Peterboro', John Morrison, who had settled in Truro, may have had some influence in Mr. Blanchard's removal to Nova Scotia. Mr. Blanchard came to Nova Scotia in 1785; settled at Truro, where he bought the property of John Morrison; built a two story house in the Upper Village of Truro; carried on an extensive business in lumber; was active in all affairs for the promotin of the town, and was colonel of the militia. Mr. Blanchard was married in Middleton, Mass., Nov. 10, 1766, to Elizabeth Treadwell, b. in 1739, the daughter of Jacob and Sarah (Cotton) Treadwell of Portsmouth, N.H. The officiating clergyman at Mr. Blanchard's marriage, was his brother-in-law, Rev, Elias Smith, then stationed at Middleton, who had married his sister, Catherine. Mr. Blanchard died at Truro, Mar. 18, 1807, aged 62 years, and Mrs. Blanchard died there, Jan. 5, 1811, aged 72 years. Index. Jotham. 1744 b. Dunstable. 1997. 11. 28 Jotham. 1778. Hi All, You're probably wondering why my post, Reply From Pat Blanchard Curry, is showing up so many times on this list (three times so far; hope there's no more!). My original post got missent (I suspect that the rootsweb robot did this) to about 8 or 9 people who do not subscribe to this list. I thought that it would not appear on this mailing list so I resent it. Lo and behold, as soon as I resent it, the original transmission appears on the list. This last posting of that same message was done by one of the addressees who received it by mistake, thinking that she was the only one who got it (she was trying to be helpful by sending it on to BLANCHARD-L, the original addressee). Anyways, I apologize to all of you who have had to suffer through three separate postings of this long message. I'll certainly try to do better in the future! Tom Wilde wildeman@pilot.infi.net
The following article appeared in 'The Yarmouth Herald', Vol. 96, on Tuesday November 20, 1928. Among the 10 pages of the issue, this article was on page 4, columns 3, 4, and 5, written by F. E. Crowell, of Boston, Mass. This is the first column. NEW ENGLANDERS IN NOVA SCOTIA --- An Historic Sketch of Their Ancestry and Their Settlement, First in New England States and Later in Nova Scotia, Locating in Yarmouth, Shelburne and Other Counties --- No. 41 BLANCHARD Deacon John (1) Blanchard lived in Dunstable which was in Massachusetts until 1741, when a revision of the Province line transferred the greater part of the original grant to New Hampshire, where to-day it is the most densely settled part of the city of Nashua. It has been stated in print that Dea. John Blanchard of Dunstable, was the son of Thomas Blanchard, an American ancestor of a numerous family of Braintree and Charlestown, Mass. Evidence recently discovered by Mr. Stearns, author of "Founders of Old Dunstables" and others, established the fact that Dea. John was a son of 'widow' Ann Blanchard, who died in Chelmsford, Mass, June 24, 1662. It is thought that William Blanchard of Boston, the tailor, was a brother of Dea. John and that they were probably nephews of Thomas. Dea. John Blanchard married about 1657, Elizabeth Hill, b.1627, daughter of Joseph Hill of Malden, Essex Co., England, and Charlestown, Mass., by his first wife (he had four) Rose Clarke. The 500 acres of land in Dunstable, which was granted to Joseph Hill, is in his will, bequeathed to his granddaughters, Hanah and Elizabeth Blanchard of Dunstable. Elizabeth, wife of Dea. John Blanchard, died about 1662, and he m. (2) Hannah (Brackett), b. in Braintree, Mass., in 1634, daughter of Dea. Richard and Alice ( --- ) Brackett, and widow of Samuel Kingsley. Deacon Blanchard was one of the founders and first deacon of the church of Dunstable, and one of the most active and useful citizens of that town. He died in 1694. His widow Hannah, her daughter Elizabeth (Kingsley) Cummings, her son Nathaniel Blanchard and his wife Lydia, and their daughter Susanna, were all slain at Dunstable by the Indians, July 3, 1706. * * * * * * Capt. Joseph (2) Blanchard (John 1) b. Nov. 1, 1672. He has been described as a man of character and ability, and prominent in the affairs of Dunstable. He was town clerk, proprietors clerk and selectman. He m. May 25, 1696, Abiah Hassell, b. at Concord, Mass., May 13, 1673, daughter of Joseph and Ann (2) (Perry) Hassell (William 1) of Concord, and grandau. of Richard Hassell, b. 1622; settled in Cambridge, Mass., before 1643, where he and his wife Joan were early members of the church. He removed to Billerica, Mass., in 1676, where he was chosen "to inspect the lads on the Sabbath days." He removed from Billerica to Dunstable in 1679. Abiah's sister, Anna Hassell, m. John Lovewell, and were the parents of Capt. John Lovewell, the Indian fighter, who was killed with eleven of his men and buried on the field of battle. Abiah's brothers, Richard and Benjamin Hassell, were slain by the Indians. Mr. Blanchard died in 1727, and Mrs. Blanchard died Dec. 8, 1746. They were the parents of nine children. * * * * * * Col. Joseph (3) Blanchard (Joseph 2, John 1) b. in Dunstable, Feb. 11, 1704; m. at Groton, Mass., Sept. 26, 1728, Rebecca Hubbard, b. at Concord, Mass., Feb. 11, 1710/11, daughter of Major Jonathan and Rebecca (Brown) Hubbard. Mr. Blanchard was commissioned a Colonel of the regiment of militia from 1744 until his death, and maintaining intimate relations with Gov. Benning Wentworth he was entrusted with the assignment of troops from his regiment to exposed points at the north and west of Dunstable. In 1755, he commanded a regiment in the expedition to Crown Point. In 1749, he was appointed a Justice of the Superior Court and held the commission until his death. He was the trusted agent of the Masonian Proprietors, and as attorney, he made grants of several towns and his activities moulded the early history of many communities. His tombstone in the old town of Dunstable says -- "The Hon. Joseph Blanchard, Esqr. deceased April the 7th 1758, aged 53". His widow, Rebecca, died Apr. 17, 1774. They had thirteen children. * * * * * * ----- Index. John . 1694 d. 1997. 11. 28. Index. Ann . 1662 d . Chelmsford,Mass. 1997. 11. 28. Index. Elizabeth (Hill). 1627 b. 1997. 11. 28. Index. Good Evening: I am Harold Davis Hilton of Chicago, and am happy to join this list. My Blanchard connection is to Hannah b. 1690 at Woburn MA m. 1713 to Jonathan Hartwell b. ca 1686. I think Hannah was a daughter of Thomas Blanchard b. 1668 and Tabitha Leffingwell b. 1661; Thomas being a son of Joseph b.? I have found reference to Joseph arriving in North America in 1637 and dying that year in Oct. Any corroboration of the persons and dates mentioned will be appreciated. Through Leffingwell to Hartwell, then to Melvin and Eaton, my mother's father's family. I am currently researching HILTON, NORTON, MONTZ, NOFFSINGER on may dad's side and DAVIS, EATON, TREAT, and SISTY on my mom's side. I am looking forward to hearing from Blanchard, Leffingwell, and HArtwell cousins. Thank you. hdhilton

Hi all, I sent this message Monday. It was delivered to four unknown addressees who didn't know why I sent it to them (I didn't! I sent it to BLANCHARD-L). It obviously did not get sent to this list. I don't know why. Maybe my mail server goofed or maybe the rootsweb robot made an error. Anyway, I'm reposting it to the list for your information. The entry for 1704[/5] is torn and does not have the name of the child anymore, but is probably for Joseph Abbot, who married Deborah Blanchard, a younger sister of the Joseph Blanchard above. Sarah's death record shows her age in 1757 as 55, so she was evidently born in 1702 or so. John Index: Joseph 1701 b Andover, MA 1997 11 25

The only big change I know of was the new province line of 1741, which indeed benefited the Masonian proprietors to the detriment of the orignal proprietors, but that line was surveyed by Richard Hazen, not Josaph Blanchard (who was only 12 then, after all). I suppose this must refer to surveys of townships that had existed before 1741 and were regranted and resurveyed under the new regime? John

(The marriage is on record in Boston as being in "1742", and I'm forced to make an assumption about the year because some helpful clerk alphabetized the records for each year and threw away the originals.) MB says Samuel was born in Littleton, but there is no record of the birth there, nor in Sutton, where the second son Joseph was born for sure. I have not yet seen any indication of when Joseph Sr died, but there may be some probate records. Sutton shows the death of an unnamed "wife of Joseph" in 1780 at age about 60 -- this is probably Abigail, but I have no proof. > M: Susanna Tenney b. d. MB makes no mention of this Abiathar, and he doesn't appear in the vitals. There is, however, an Abiathar who died in Palmer in 1848 aged 53 who was born in Oxford, *and* it just so happens that the Oxford vitals show a Susanna Blanchard born in 1799 to Samuel and Susanna. That is really pushing the limits of childbearing age, so maybe there were another Sam'n'Sue? Thank you Sherry for catching my spelling error. You asked: >Am I correct in understanding that Joseph the surveyor was Jotham's brother? Yes, according to the J.C. Hartman article in the NEGHR which has Joseph on pg.234 and Jotham on pg. 236. I should add this article and page for reference. One thing I truly missed out on was last summers get together and looking into the Histories of the various towns in the area. I should also have referenced "History of the Town of Antigonish", by 3391. D.G.Whidden. The number '3391' is his lineage from Jotham, thru Jotham's 3rd child, Elizabeth, then her 3rd child, Harriett, then her 9th child, Charles B., and his 1st child was D.G. Whidden. -- Rannie
Hello Ron. Thomas BLANCHARD, the inventor of the lathe for turning gun stocks, ax-helves, etc., was a cousin of Anna BLANCHARD, wife of Heil HUNT, the daughter of Lemuel Blanchard who married May 29, 1773, Mary Littlefield. LINEAGE:Anna-7, Lemuel-6, Samuel-5, John-4, John-3, Nathaniel-2, Thomas-1 So Thomas would be the son of one of Lemuel's brothers: Samuel, b Nov. 1744; William, b Aug. 31, 1747; Elisha, b Aug. 17, 1752; Joseph, b 1756; or Jonathan, b 1759. In this case, Samuel would be the father then. In the Dictionary of American Biography, Volume II, 1929 edition, some references for this Thomas are: - "Biog. Sketch of Tho. Blanchard and His Inventions" (1878) by Asa H. WATERS - "Boston Evening Transcript", April 18, 1864 I haven't seen these documents. -- Rannie
