The word was passed down "on high" yesterday that the RootsWeb Archive Search pages are ready. I have had only a little time to inspect our BLANCHARD-L site but will pass along some comments. There are lots of things to be learned but this is a start! The "RootsWeb Mailing Lists -- Interactive Search" Page can be found at: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl Enter the name of the List that you wish to search and Submit. If you enter "BLANCHARD-L" (no quotes), you will reach the "Search the Archive of Messages for BLANCHARD Mailing List" Page. There are directories for 1996 and 1997. Select one and enter your search words. [You can also link to the "theaded message" search page that Marc Nozell has set up for BLANCHARD-L, by selecting the link: http://lists.rootsweb.com/~archiver/lists/BLANCHARD-L/ , just below the "Query area". ] _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Here is what I have learned from exchanges with Karen Isaacson and a few sample search trials. 1. If you enter "Moulton Blanchard" for 1997 messages, you will get 8 messages that have those words somewhere within the message and will have to sort through them if you are looking for a particular message. Enclosing the words in quotes seaches for both words in that order. 2. Retrieving individual messages or digests from the "Demonstration Search" page http://searches.rootsweb.com/example.html that I reported to you on 19 Nov., could not be duplicated with the new Search page!! When I asked Karen if we were going to be able to retrieve single messages or digests using our Index-Lines numbering system - [ examples: using date 1997 12 04 or the message number, latest /337 or digest number, volume 97/12 ], Here is what she said: "I don't think the search engine will do what you want. You could reindex using the Message-ID's -- I believe that they're all preserved..." Here is an example of a "Message ID" for a message sent by Carole Schauber on 30 Nov 1997 that is identified as latest /323 The ID on the <message sent to the List> is: "nKZHOC.A.5mD.64jg0"@fp-1.rootsweb.com but using this ID <will not retrieve Carole's message!!> The ID on Carole's <message in the RootsWeb archives> is: 34823E63.B5F953F4@mnsi.net and using this ID <will retrieve Carole's message>. Adding all <these> IDs to our Index-Lines would be a major major job and this only covers the messages at RootsWeb. This would require accessing each message in the RootsWeb archives and copying its ID to all the Index-Lines for that message!! The archived messages from Maiser <do not have ID numbers> on the original messages sent to the List or on the archived messages at RootsWeb !! 3. The mail message numbers, latest/xxx do not appear in the RootsWeb archived messages so they are useless to perform a search. 4. I learned today that it is possible to search on date; for example, you could retrieve Carole's message by entering "30 Nov 1997" as the search string (must use the quotes/) but all other messages posted on that date are also retrieved. 5. Searching a date will also work on the Maiser messages and retrieves all messages posted on that date. Be sure to include the quotes. 6. For single digit days like 5 Nov, messages for 15 Nov and 25 Nov will also be returned. _ _ _ _ _ That's enough for now. I suggest you play with the Archives Search and let me know your reactions. In the meantime, I will think more about Index-Lines and how we might be able to use them. When things become clearer, we should be able to summarize the Search procedures in a few paragraphs?? Please! Anything on New Jersey Blanchards!! Cynthia
Hello, It's been a while since I've been with you, and I hope everyone has been having a successful hunt. I have been busy researching the Oregon Trail experience and the Mexican War activities of JOSHUA PETTINGILL BLANCHARD (b.1820 VT-d.1884 OR). His wife REBECCA JANE RACE (1828-1921) was from OH. Now I turn to his parents and grandparents (AMOS and ASA, respectively.) AMOS BLANCHARD (b.1791 in MA-d.1836 in Barre,VT) married DOLLY PETTINGILL (1794-1870). ASA BLANCHARD (b1769 in Strubridge, MA-d.1850 in Wildersburg (Barre), VT) married LYDIA NICHOLS (1775-1859). There were an AMOS and an AMOS BLANCHARD listed in the Roster of Vermont Soldiers in the War of !812, but I have not been able to verify that they were "my" Blanchards. Anyone have any suggestions, other than NARA, which doesan't have their records. I would like to correspond with anyone who has connections/info on the Vermont BLANCHARDs. Please respond to my email address, as I have found it necessary to reduce greatly the number of lists I used to belong to. If I get significant response, I will rejoin the group and share what I find. Albert (skipb@nh.ultranet.com)
I have now gone through the 1800 census to verify the information on Blanchards in Rhode Island. Not surprisingly, there weren't very many, and I am posting the whole list here. The format is the same as my previous 1800 posting(s), except that the entries are grouped by town this time. I didn't find any errors in the information supplied by the index, and I didn't see any Blanchards omitted from the index. The only information I added is the names of the towns. I hope this is helpful. Holday Greetings! December 1 has come and gone and the new archive system has not been implemented at RootsWeb. On or about 01 Dec, Karen Isaacson reported to the Listowners that it might be another two weeks before the Archives were ready. Yesterday, Marc Nozell (who has been developing the "threaded message" archives) notifed Listowners that: >Currently 542 lists have requested that they be archived on the web. >To date, only 487 have had any messages sent to them since they made >the request, so there are slightly fewer mailing lists found on: > http://lists.rootsweb.com/~archiver/lists/ A brief visit to this page, confirms the following: BLANCHARD-L is one of the 500+/- lists at Marc's site. At present, only messages from Nov/Dec 1997 are available and these are not identified by their latest/xx number. The archive is set up with monthly directories (Nov, Dec 1997, at present) Messages are arranged approximately by posting date but neither date or message # (latest/xx) have been used to order the messages. Messages are identified by Subject: and, if you visit the BLANCHARD-L site, you will see the importance of using meaningful and consistent Subject: lines. If you go to the Thread Index, you will find the messages grouped somewhat according to message subject or thread. Here again, you can see the importance of entering a new Subject: line or, if your message refers to a previous message, use something like: Re: James Blanchard, Rutland, VT. _ _ _ _ _ I was waiting to hear more about the final RootsWeb Archive/Search situation so I could give you as accurate a review as possible. However, as long as we are talking about archives I'll throw in a few observations about the demonstration mail list search page at: http://searches.rootsweb.com/example.html that I described briefly in "RootsWeb Archives report" (latest /295) on 19 Nov. It <have> been able to retrieve separate list digests but <not> separate mail messages. For example, if you search the Keithley List, and enter "digest v/97/11" in the search window, you will retrieve Digest #11 for 1997. However, if you enter "latest /50" or "mail latest /50", you <will not> be able to retrieve mail message #50. Perhaps I do not have the correct syntax and must wait until Karen gives us a set of instructions. At least it appears that, if we know what Digest a message is in, we can retrieve the Digest and then sort through to find the message. I hope that the final search procedure will be able to do better than this! Brief Summary: It still appears that there will be <two> archive/search web sites 1. One as represented by the demo mail list search page (Rev. War, Keithley, et al) and 2. Another separate site as represented by Marc Nozell's site which now has 500+/- mail lists on it. If this is true, please don't ask me to explain why there will be two web sites rather than a single site and an e-mail access like the present SmartList. I haven't seen any new information about the status of the old MAISER list message archives. All we know is that they exist somewhere at RootsWeb but how they are to be integrated with the RootsWeb archived messages, is a mystery. If any of you BLANCHARD-L members / Listowners out there have new light to shed on the Archives situation, don't hesitate to share it with the List. Final word: I really can use your help with the Index-Lines database. Until we decide that the new RootsWeb archive/search procedures will meet our needs and Index-Lines are no longer required, I'd like to continue maintaing the database. If each member supplies Lines for their posts, it is much easier for me to add them periodically to the database. Thanks. Fletch

Hi, again, Continuing from my previous messages, I also came across the mention of Blanchards in the publication "New England Vital Records from the Exeter, N.H., News-Letter 1853-1858." These included: Destruction of a steamer by fire. -- Thirty or Forty Passengers missing. -- Buffalo, July 17 -- The Steamer Northern Indiana took fire about 11 o'clock this morning, while on her voyage to Toledo, and burned to the water's edge. Hello.... I'm another BLANCHARD researcher whose been watching from the wings for some time now with the hopes that I just might see something that would tie with my Blanchard lines. I'm trying to find a link to my g-grandfather James Milton. According to Union Army records, he was born in Exeter, Maine in 1844, joined the army in 1862 and served with the 20th Main Infantry. Does anyone out there have any information that might tie in with what little I have? I'd love to get beyond James Milton. Thanks for your help, Jean (Blanchard) Day P.S. If anyone would like to contact me via snail mail, my address is: P.O. Box 421,Cedar Ridge, Ca. 95924
Continuing from my previous message, I also came across the mention of Blanchards in the publication "New England Vital Records from the Exeter, N.H., News-Letter 1847-1852." However, there was a different Amos who was born in Andover in 1777 and died in Tewksbury in 1817, who had brothers named John and Aaron that might match. I am stymied with my great grandparents and desperately need help. All that I know is William M. BLANCHARD (b. Jun 1851, TN) m. Sarah MURRAY (b. 1874,TN) and their two children, Nettie Eujanie (b. 1892) and Robert (b. 1895) were born in MS. William and Sarah showed up on the 1900 Census for Ascension Parish, LA. The census shows that William's parents were from TN and Sarah's father was from France and her mother from MO. I would appreciate any leads that could help be find William M.'s parents. This list is fortunate to have exceptionally knowledgeable contributors. I would like to first thank Rannie for his guidance, I was up that tree but didn't know which branch my twig belonged on. Sherry for her relentless digging and sharing I have enjoyed immensely, and Chandler for his patience, he never forgets that many of us are new to genealogy, computers and to Internet, his explanations and accuracy, especially those funny dates have helped me a great deal. Now for the questions. How do you keep all this data straight, what program, do you use? I desperately need some type of system for organizing everything. I have some in MS Word, some in Excel, some (direct lines) in family tree maker. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I would also be interested in any information on Amos Blanchard (the Andover schoolmaster, whose house is now the museum of Andover Historical Society) and his brothers and sisters, I believe two of his brothers John and Aaron came to Greenbush, Leeds County Ont. in 1800 Thanks to all the contributors for making this list interesting and fun. Continuing from my previous message, I also came across the mention of Blanchards in the publication "New England Vital Records from the Exeter, N.H., News-Letter 1841-1846." Perhaps they too will be of help to someone. These included: Marriage -- In New York, by Rev. H.W. Bellows, A.W. Blanchard, Esq. of Boston, to Miss Sarah Jane, daughter of the late Hon. Samuel Smith of Peterborough. -- Vol. XIII (No. 29) 6 Nov. 1843. Marriage -- In Hopkinton, Hon. Horace Chase to Miss Lucy Blanchard. -- Vol. XIV (No. 12) 8 July 1844 (Also Vol. XIV (No. 16) 5 Aug. 1844.) Marriage -- In Nashville, Capt. Eliphalet S. Nutter, of Barnstead, to Miss Sylvania M. Blanchard of Lowell. -- Vol. XIV (No. 48) 17 March 1845. I have been sitting back and reading all of your e-mails regarding Blanchard geneaology and have not been able to link my Blanchard to any yet. So I thought that I should put my "stuff" out there and see what shakes out. I am searching Blanchards from Rutland, Vermont. So far I have found from Census information the following: BLANCHARD, STILLMAN R. b. June 1847 married to Julona K. b. May 1850 in New York Son: SMITH B. born Dec 1883 in Minnesota Son: FRED L. born Dec 1898 in Rutland, Vermont I have also found a STILLMAN BLANCHARD born Jan 1813 born of BENJAMIN BLANCHARD and PATTY ROWE, who came from ABEL BLANCHARD of Peacham, Vermont. Since STILLMAN is an uncommon name, I think that STILLMAN (1847) is probably descended of STILLMAN (1813), but I have not made the connection yet. So you can see that I have some puzzle pieces but cannot put them together yet. There was also mention on a research CD of a STILLMAN BLANCHARD from Maine. Does anyone have any information on these unusual names, STILLMAN or SMITH?
