Could someone please look up William M. Blanchard (b. Jun 1851, TN). He married about 1890 to Sarah MURRAY (b. Jun 1874, TN), but I suspect he may have had a previous wife. I would be so grateful of help. Hi Sherry, John et al, I have several questions about Elizabeth Hills. I have noticed the past discussions about her but am confused by them. I have her born or baptized 21 Oct 1627 at Malden, Essex, England, the daughter of Joseph Hills and either his first wife, Rose Clarke, or his second wife, Hannah (Smith) Mellows. However, the Hill discussion group has the name of the first wife of Joseph Hills as Rose Dunster. The group has Joseph Hills born 3 Mar 1602 in Malden, England, and dying 1688 in Malden, Mass. The group has Rose Dunster born 1603 and dying 1650 in Malden, Mass. The date of marriage is given as 22/23 July 1624 in Essex, England. The discussion group gives Joseph Hills a second wife, Hannah (Smith) Mellows, and a third wife, Ann Lunt. Can you help me with this? Then I have Elizabeth Hills marrying George Blanchard about 1653 and marrying Dea. John Blanchard about 1658. Neither of these Blanchards are in my direct line but I would like to straighten out the relationships between Elizabeth Hills, George Blanchard and Dea. John Blanchard. I have also looked through Torrey, Savage and other sources and remain confused. I would appreciate any help that will straighten this out. Thank you in advance. jututtle@aol.com (JohnTuttle)

Hi all- Went to the Buffalo and Erie County Library all day Friday and Saturday to look up my RI Blanchard ancestry. Unfortunately for me, although there are many volumes of references to the MA Blanchards, there were only 2 references of my line. If you ever are in the Buffalo, NY area, you may request a lookup in the Blanchard files at no cost. The volumes are organized in 3 sections: Descendents of Thomas Blanchard Blanchard men A-Z Blanchard Women A-Z There are also misc. papers regarding the Blanchards that Mrs. Bethune had collected form various sources. For most of you, Much of this information is redundant. Basically Mrs. Bethune has consulted many of the resources we have ( ie NEGR, Prov Recolrds, Boston records, etc) and hand written them down in multiple volumes and scraps of paper. They wheeled out an entire cart load for me. It was overwhelming.. therefore, I was not able in this short period of time to do specific lookups. I have hard copies of the lookups you all requested and when I have another chance, will head back to look for you. Happy New Year to all- I'll be hunting again soon!- Susan
I write to extend an invitation to you all to have details of any of your UK Blanc/shard interests published in the newsletter of the Blanc/shard Family History Society. The next edition will be published in March - the copy deadline is February 15th. I will need snail-mail addresses since many of our members are not e-mail enabled. This is not a "commercial" but you can find out more about us at: http://www.blanshard.demon.co.uk/bfhs.htm We are nearly two years old and now have a membership of around 70 worldwide. In case you have not guessed, I am the newsletter editor! I will try and invite all Blanc/shard FHS members to state their interests and post this to the Blanchard list. This is however unlikely to happen for a few months yet. Good hunting in 1998! -- John Blanchard
HAPPY GENEALOGICALLY PROFITABLE NEW YEAR TO ALL! First allow me to beg your indulgence as I reword a query I believe I posted earlier. I am trying to "prove" that these two JOSIAH BLANCHARDS below are the same person. A lot is riding on this connection, and I have only Cutter's claim in "New England Families" (,with no source document cited) that they are the same person, I. (From the 1939 NEHG "Register" article by Hartman, p.232). <<JOSIAH BLANCHARD, b.at Concord,MA, 23 June 17333 married ELIZABETH PIERCE at Lincoln, MA, on 30 Jan 1755 and had son JOSIAH, Jr. b. at Lincoln on 9 May 1755>> and II.(From "New England Families" vol iv, p.2138 by Cutter) <<JOSIAH BLANCHARD,son of JOSIAH BLANCHARD was born in Concord June 23 1730(sic). He married first at Lincoln, MA,Jan 30 1755, ELIZABETH PIERCE. He removed to Sturbridge,MA, and married there second 7 April 1762 ELIZABETH HOBBS. In 1790 he was living in Sturbridge, and, according to the census had in his family two males over sixteen and four females. Children born at Sturbridge:MARY b.1763;ANN b.1765; ASA b.1769; ABIGAIL b.1771; BERNARD b. 1773; AMOS b.1775; *by wife Elizabeth he had a Lincoln: JOHN (sic) 9 May 1755. Perhaps other children* (I don't know why Cutter listed this "John"...Hartman has him as "Josiah" ...out of order like this and not right after the marriage to ELIZABETH PIERCE at the start of the paragraph and before Cutter has him moved to Sturbridge) He removed to Barre, VT, where died about 1800. Children not recorded at Sturbridge: ABIDIAH; BETSEY, 1779; LUCY,1779, died Sept 26, 1864, married DAVID RICHARDSON; RACHEL, 1781, married PETER NICHOLS.>> As I wrote, it is critical that I find some verification that these two JOSIAHs are the same person. Before I start the arduous task of locating vital records and checking town histories, etc. I am sending out this note to see if this mountain has already been climbed by someone else and the task achieved. Anyone who has connections to this line or who has sources other than the two mentioned above is MOST welcomed to lend an assist. Hi all- Noticed the dicussion of the Phebe/ Laban thing. I was reading through the Blanchard of RI last night looking for my ancestors and noticed that there were four Phebes. Jeremiah had a second wife whose name oddly enough was also Phebe. Strange thing. Your writings are accurate if mine are. I am going to the Buffalo and Erie County Library this weekend. Have an appointment to look into the Blanchard papers. I am specifically looking for the Levi Johnson Blanchard, Son of Samuel II who was my ggrandfathers father. Then I will look for the William info. My line is from Moses/Ann Whaley whose lineage is not followed through in the Blanchard Bk. In my reading last night- saw the Shoemaker info- will send to list asap. From various sources on the net, I have gleaned alot of this family. I am trying to organize all data, then will post as I can. I am primarily focusing on the RI line- have not connected to MA line (Thomas) yet. Question- I read on the net that William was from Hesse, FR. Is this true? Can anyone document it, or is it just hearsay from Adalaide's bk? Thanks- Happy New Year all. Susan Blanchard Shaw
Happy New Year!
SEVENTH GENERATION 66. Laban/Leban Blanchard b. 1764 Scituate, RI m. (67) Jane McDowell 67. Jane McDowell b. ABT 1759 Family (1): Elijah Shoemaker Sr. (died in Wyoming Massacre) Child: Col. Elijah Shoemaker Jr. Family (2): (66) Laban Blanchard i. (33) Phebe Blanchard John, this is what I have on Laban/Leban Blanchard. I suppose it is possible that "Laban" (Daniel Shoemaker's son-in-law) and "Leban", born in Scituate, RI are two different people. Jane McDowell ties the two together, so there would have to be two Janes in that case, too. Since Jane's father, John McDowell, was an immigrant from Ireland, I doubt that. Moreover, the emotional connection between the Shoemakers, the McDowells and Laban was so deep, I find it hard to see how Leban and Laban could be anything BUT the same person. Leban's father, Joseph Blanchard, was (probably tortured and) killed by Indians shortly after the Wyoming massacre -- in which Elijah Shoemaker Sr., Jane McDowell's brand new husband, and father of her one-month-old son Elijah Jr., was born. Fatherless Leban/Laban married widowed Jane, and raised their family. Daniel Shoemaker later sold his property to his nephew Elijah Jr., and named his own son Elijah in honor of his slain brother. Further evidence that we are talking about one and the same Jane McDowell is in the fact that a Shaw also married one of Daniel's daughters (John McDowell had become the owner of a Mr. Shaw's properties in Cherry Valley, PA, and the mother of the Shaw that married Daniel's daughter had also been born with the surname McDowell. To thicken the plot even more, Daniel Shoemaker himself was married to Anna McDowell, Jane's sister. (see my bit about the Wyoming Massacre at http://www.pacwest.net/bigshoe/shoegen.html ) I was thrown for a loop for a while because Jeremiah Blanchard Jr. also had a daughter Phebe Blanchard, born in the same year as Laban's Phebe, but Jeremiah's Phebe was listed as married to Caleb Cooper: Hi, Leban, was the son of Joseph and Mary Page, Joseph was the son of Timothy and Mary Edmunds. Timothy had a brother, Theophilus who had a son Jeremiah. I am descended from Jeremiah and Theophilus. Captain Jeremiah Blanchard went to the Wyoming Valley at the same time Joseph did. He was Captain of Fort Pittston (Brown) at the time of the Battle of Wyoming. Have you seen the information on the Blanchard family in The Michael Shoemaker Book. Laban had a sister named Phebe born at Scituate, RI May 13, 1771. Jeremiah Sr. also had a daughter with Phebe Bates, his wife, named Phebe born about1776- 1851 who married Rufus Clark. This Phebe may have been born in PA since the Susquehanna Company records show Jeremiah, her father was in residence there in 1772 and maybe earlier. If she was in Forty Fort then I strongly suspect that she is either the daughter of Joseph or Jeremiah or a granddaughter. To my knowledge, Joseph and Jeremiah were the only Blanchards to settle in that area of PA at that time. Jeremiah, Jr. also had a daughter Phebe born 1787, but I have her spouse listed as Caleb Cooper. Do you have any information on the William, father of Timothy and Jeremiah. Or any infor on the Wickenden's or Steere's? Have you done any research in the Wyoming Historical Society? Are you on the Blanchard list? Good luck, Joyce Burns, Reading, PA Jeremiah's father, Jeremiah Blanchard Sr., was in command of Fort Brown, across the river from where Elijah Shoemaker Sr. met his demise. He was unable to help those settlers because the Indians had taken all his boats. I haven't checked since finding out that Laban was Phebe's father, but the census or tax rolls ought to confirm that there was only one adult Laban Blanchard in the county where they were married. Dick, I got the following from a certain John Hover. It confirms that Phebe, first wife of my ancestor Elijah Shoemaker, is the daughter of Laban Blanchard. It also has information about Daniel Shoemaker's ancestry (given in the first few lines) which I believe is incorrect, based on the lineage you worked out, with much verification, to the Ulster Co., NY Schoonmakers. Please let me know what you think of it. p.281 Benjamin Shoemaker came to America from Holland, in the decade of 1620-30, and settled near Philadelphia. His son Benjamin, who is buried, and whos will is on record at Easton , Pa., (???) was the father of Daniel Shoemaker, who settled just west of the Water-gap in Pennsylvania -- now called Broadheads-where he owned a custom and flouring mill. About the year 1797, he visited Big Flats, in Chemung county, and Painted Post, in Steugen county with the intention of selttling there where large tracts of land p.282 were offered him for ninety cents and acre. But there being nothing but an Indian trail from Athens, Pa., to that territory, he returned and purchased about 1,000 acres of land in this town, mostly squatter claims. He had but one brother, Elijah, who settled in the the Wyoming valley, and who was tomahawked by Windecker (See my web page at http://www.pacwest.net/bigshoe/SHOEGEN.HTML) at the massacre of Wyoming. Daniel married Anna McDowell, by whom he had seven children, born as follows: Hannah, February 7, 1777, who married Isaac S. Swartwood; Elizabeth, January 22, 1779, wife of George Nyce; Benjamin, February 8, 1781; John, March 22, 1783; Robert, May 20, 1785; Sarah, May 26, 1787; Elijah, July 28, 1789, once sheriff, and afterward associate justice of Tioga county; Nicholas, January 27, 1792, who settled where his son William R. now lives; Daniel McD., Fegruary 24, 1795; who occupied the homestead of his father, where the cottage of John Bensley now stands; Anna, July 8, 1797, wife of William ross. Benjamin, who settled on Wappasening creek, in Pennsylvania, married Eunice Shaw, by whom he had seven children, viz.: Richard, Mary, elijah, Samuel, Daniel, Anna, and John. Elijah, son of Daniel Shoemaker, married first, Phebe daughter of Laban and Jane (McDowell) Blanchard, by whom he had seven children, viz.: Jane, widow of Washington Smith; George N., Nicholas, Charles McD., and Elijah B., deceased; Jonathan Platt, and Phebe, also deceased. He married second, Cathararine Floyd, of Chemung, N.Y., by whom he had two children, Hannah Shoemaker, A.M., who is preceptress of Hamlin university, Minn., and Capt. Thomas Floyd Shoemaker, of California. Nicholas married Hannah Blanchard, by whom he had five children: James and Anna, deceased; William R., and Edgar, of Nichols: and Caroline, wife of Col. Fred M. Shoemaker, of Wilkesbarre, Pa., now deceased. Daniel McD. amrried Maria Thurston, who was born in New Marlboro, N.H., may 19, 1797, and by whom he had five children, viz: Hiram W., Elizabeth N., Horace A., who died in infancy; Horace A., 2d, and Lyman T. Edgar, son of Nicholas Shoemaker, born February 23, 1837, married Laura A., daughter of Zina Goodsell, of this town, by whom he has had seven children, viz: Caroline, Edgar, Stella, Zina, Mary A., who died at the age of two years; May, and Fannie Maud. Horace A., son of Daniel McD. Shoemaker, received his early education at Kingston, Pa., and at Little Falls, N.Y. He studied for the frofession of Civil Engineer, which profession he followed for nine years, during which time he was engaged on the N.Y.L.E. & W. R.R.; on the blue Ridge & p.283 Pendleton R.R., and on the West Branch canal. He married Hester L., daughter of James Comfort, of Lanesboro, Pa., by whom he has three children, viz. Rev. Hiram R., now located at Naverino, N.Y., George Winthrop, a physician and druggist at Billlings, Mont., and Marth E., preceptress of the Middleburgh academy, Shoharie county, N.Y. -- "Historical Gazetteer, 1785-1888 and Directory, 1887-1888 of Tioga County, New York" compiled and Edited by W.B. The town records in Billerica show a daughter Martha born 1757 Aug 2, while the the church records show the baptism of a son Nathaniel on the Sunday following. I believe the church record to be in error, since there is no further record of any such Nathaniel, but Martha is known to have grown up and married Benjamin Blanchard of Wilton. John
