Am new to this list and apologize if you have already done the Ontario Blanchard family to death.. but Stephen Blanchard (1786-1875) of New York State (Albany?) married. 1. Nancy Yager (1792-1826) 2. Susannah Howard (1801-1876) They lived in Sidney Township, Hastings Co. Ontario. By second wife had children 1. William Blanchard (1827-1879) m. Mary Lawrence 2. Thomas Howard Blanchard (1830-1901) m. Anne Deacon. Who were Stephen Blanchards parents? Does anyone know of any other descendants? Eric Bowler, Toronto.
Hi Martha, Thank you so much for responding so promptly to my email. All I know about my g-g-grandfather George Blanchard is: 1) He was born c. 1824 in Clinton County, New York 2) He was married to a woman named Margaret who was born c. 1831 also in Clinton County, New York 3) In 1860 he was living in Buffalo, New York with his wife and four children (Harriet, George, Charles, and Mora), working as an engineer. 4) His father was born in Canada and his mother in New York. I am currently working on the possibilities that either a) his father was Acadian or b) his father was of Irish descent and his family came into Canada through Quebec. The Charles Blanchard listed is Kathi's posting is a candidate for George's father: - he is the right age - he is from Canada - his wife is from New York All we know about this Charles Blanchard is in the listing. Clinton County is in the northeastern corner of New York state. Fort Ann is on the eastern side of Clinton County on the Vermont border. By the way, have you corresponded with Ranald (Rannie) Blanchard (ai020@chebucto.na.ca)? He lives in Mt Uniacke, NS and may be a resource for you. His Blanchards are not Acadians but descended from the Thomas Blanchard who landed in Massachusetts in the 17th century. I would suspect that the George and Charles Blanchards from Truro, NS that you mention may be related to his New England Blanchards. I would be very excited (and surprised) that either of these two men were related to me since I've found no English connections so far. Sincerely, Dave Schuler Chicago, Illinois

The above Edward and Jean (ARCHIBALD) BLANCHARD are my grt. grt. grt grandparents. Edward was not of Acadian descent. He was the son of Col. Jotham and Elizabeth (TREADWELL) BLANCHARD who came to the Truro, NS area in 1785 from southern New Hampshire area. On page 257 of Miller's "History and Genealogical Record of Colchester County", Edward's family is as follows: Edward Sherburne Blanchard, the third son of Jotham and Elizabeth Blanchard, was born in New Hampshire, February, 1778. He was brought by his parents to Nova Scotia in the year 1785, when he was seven years old. He was married to Jane [*Jean*], the fourth daughter of Matthew Archibald, Esq., and Janet Fisher, February 18th, 1802. He resided for a time in a house that was owned by John Smith, which stood between the house that Mr. Smith then resided in and the place which Mr. Robert Smith now resides. After this, he built the house, which is still standing, on the north side of Salmon River, at the mouth of the old road leading to Pictou, where he spent the remainder of his days. At this place, he kept an inn until the year 1832. He then gave it up, and subscribed his name to the rules of a temperance society; and, after this, he was an active advocate for the cause of temperance. He filled the offices of Justice of the Peace and Commissioner of Schools for a long time, and took a deep interest in the education of the young. He died Dec. 24th, 1856, aged 78 years and 10 months, His widow died February 9th, 1873, aged 90 years. Nancy Blanchard, their eldest daughter, was born in Truro, Feb'y 5th, 1803. She was married to Isaac McCurdy, Esq., of Onslow, January 21st, 1828. they had five sons and two daughters. Jane Blanchard, their second daughter, was born July 1st, 1807. She was married to Dr. John Waddell, June 25th, 1844. They had one son and two daughters. Charles Blanchard, their eldest son, was born December 22nd, 1809. He was married to Nancy, the second daughter of John Blair, 3rd, and Elizabeth McNutt, January 30th, -> PAGE 258 -> 1845. They had two sons and three daughters. He has been Sheriff of the County of Colchester since 1841. George Augustus Blanchard, their second son, was born Sept. 6th, 1811. He was married to Jane Robson, daughter of the Rev. Mr. Robson, of Halifax, October, 1840. They had two sons and three daughters. He filled the office of Judge of the Court of Probate of King's County for a number of years. Jonathan Blanchard, their third son, was born July 26th, 1813. He was married to Sarah Story, of Halifax, May 21st,1849. They had one son and two daughters. Mrs. Blanchard died in Halifax, June 21st, 1857. James Flemming Blanchard, their fourth son, was born November 8th, 1815. He settled for a few years in Miramichi, and was married there to Jessie Johnstone, Sept. 3rd, 1838. They had five sons and five daughters. He is now doing business as a merchant in Truro. He has filled the offices of Justice of the Peace and Prothonotary of the Supreme Court, for a number of years, in the County of Colchester. Elizabeth Blanchard, their third daughter, was born October 3rd, 1819. She was married to the Rev. James Waddell, September 23rd, 1837. They had three sons and four daughters. They appear among the Waddells. Mr. Waddell died in Halifax, March 14th, 1870, aged 65 years. John Blanchard, their sixth son, was born March 24th, 1822. He was married to Gertrude Woollenhoft, of Windsor, 1845. They had four sons and three daughters. He is settled in Kentville. Edward Blanchard, their fifth son, was born October 10th, 1817. He was married to Margaret Metzler, June 4th, 1864. They had two sons and one daughter. He inherited a large part of his father's farm. Sarah Blanchard, their fourth daughter, was born December 23rd, 1823. William Henry Blanchard, their seventh and youngest son, was born June 16th, 1827. He studied law, and settled in Windsor. He was married there to Maria Timlen, July, 1847. They had two sons and one daughter. Mrs. Blanchard died, and he was married again to Hannah, daughter of David McCurdy, of Onslow, and Mary Archibald, widow of the late Angus Tupper, October, 1867. David from Chicago: I have one Georges Augustin BLANCHARD from an LDS disk of Acadian BLANCHARDs that is unrelated so far to my BLANCHARD line. Bapt or b. 6 Sept 1811 in Truro, Colchester, NS, Son of Edouard & Jean ARCHIBALD, who had 11 children. Do you know who your g-g-grandfathers (George BLANCHARD, b. 1824c), father was? - - - - - - - - - - - Kathi: Re: Charles BLANCHARD, age 53 & born in Canada (Fort Ann 1855 census). Do you know where in Canada he was born? Do you know if he was Acadian or British? Where is Clinton Co? Where is Fort Ann? I figure, Charles was b. 1802c (you say Canada) & m. 1827-1833 likely in VT, since first listed child, Margaret was born 1834c in VT. I have names of two Charles BLANCHARDs (unrelated at this time) from an LDS disk on Acadian BLANCHARDs. I have no other information on the following: Charles BLANCHARD, bapt 22 Dec 1809 in Truro, Colchester, NS. Son of Edouard (Edward) Sherbune BLANCHARD & Jean ARCHIBALD, who had 11 children. Charles Amand BLANCHARD, bapt 2 Nov 1827 in Pubico, Yarmouth, NS. Son of Jean BLANCHARD & Claire MUIS, they had 8 children. - - - - - - - I am researching, mostly, the Acadian BLANCHARDs of Caraquet, New Brunswick, Canada. They migrated or escaped there after the 1755 Deportation from Port Royal & other areas in Acadia (now Nova Scotia). Ancestral lineage goes to Guillaume BLANCHARD b. 1590c in Martaize, France who came to Acadia 1640c with wife Hughette POIRIER. Happy hunting, Martha from Calgary, Alberta.
Martha, Thanks for your info. At this time, I too am stuck as to what my Charles Blanchard was-Acadian or British. I can tell you , however, that Clinton County is in northern NY state near the Canadian border and Fort Ann is in Washington County, NY on the bottom of Lake Champlain, I believe. That would have made travel easy. Any idea where to turn next?? Dave and I could use a break! Thanks, Kathi from MA
Hi Kathi, You wrote: > Here is some information from a Fort Ann 1855 census I have: >Blanchard, Charles 53 b. Canada > " Mary 50, b. Wash. Cty. Although one interpretation of the differing birth places is that they moved a lot, another is that they are, in fact, different families (although probably related). Note that Mary would have had to to 49 when the youngest, Catherine, was born. Not impossible but doubtful. Charles + Mary .Charles + Margaret ..Catherine .Julia .Amos .Edward .Noel .Betsey or Charles + Mary .Margaret (husband absent or deceased) ..Betsey ..Catherine .Julia .Amos .Edward .Noel or children of Charles and Mary: Charles, Edward, Noel someone else's children (a brother or sister, perhaps): Margaret, Julia, Amos, Betsey Catherine may be the child of Mary, Margaret, Julia, or someone else. After checking the 1830 Federal Census for New York I found a single Charles Blanchard in Clinton County but the ages do not seem to fit: Charles (head of household) < 5 5-10 10-15 15-20 30-40 40-50 Males 1 1 1 1 Females 2 1 1 1 My g-g-grandfather George Blanchard (who claimed Clinton County as place of birth) would have been born around 1824 and, therefore, could fit into this family as the 5-10 year old boy. I tried the 1840 Federal census for Vermont (where Margaret and Julia should show up as children). There are two Charles Blanchards shown in that census (one in WIND, another in CHIT). Neither seem to fit the family you show in the 1840 time frame. To me this further supports the notion that the family you show is, in fact, multiple families. If you (or anyone on the Blanchard list) can supply any more info I would very much appreciate it as I am stuck here. Sincerely, Dave Schuler Chicago, Illinois

Here's another installment. As I remarked earlier, the published AIS index for Vermont doesn't show the page numbers, just the town names, so I put off doing 1800 for Vermont, but I finally got around to it. It turns out that many of the town listings are either (A) sorted by the first letter of the surname or (B) only a page or two anyhow, so it wasn't as tedious as I feared. As before, I looked in the index first and then confirmed the data by viewing the census on microfilm. I didn't spot any Blanchards that weren't in the index this time, but there was one error in the printed tallies, and the printed index, as usual, doesn't list the towns. I note that some of the same folks from 1790 are still listed: the two in Stamford and Nathaniel in Woodbury. I surmise that Willard and Chester in Windsor were possibly the sons of "Jere" (or was that short for Jeremiah?) who was there in 1790. I hope this proves helpful. If anyone knows or suspects the connections of these folks, I'd be interested to hear more. I have been researching the surname BLANCHARD. Is it of French or English origin? If one goes back to the 100 years war between Britain & France, (somewhere in the 1350-1450s) prisoners were taken on both sides. Then in the religious war in France (1562-1598) the persecution of the French Protestants (Huguenots) apparently over 10,000 perished &/or escaped. Please excuse if I'm off a few years, either way. I am not an authority on either history or genealogy. However, another example, (this is in more recent times), the 1755 Grand Deportation of thousands of Acadians from Nova Scotia - how many descendants, (who were children) don't even know their heritage. Over time, many of the descendants' names have been changed through adoptions or misspellings. And there have been some pathetic census takers when it came to spelling of French surnames. For Theriault, I have at least 5 aka's. If one only knew the complete history of the past, our genealogical research would be much easier, eh, Carole? Martha BLANCHARD from Alberta.
Hi Rannie I was just checking my mail before sending Martha a thank-you note for posting the John (Jean Saigon) story , and there was your note. I checked my "Cemeteries of Leeds County Publication 80-1" Blanchard Cemetery #75, John Blanchard d. June 22 1856 age 84 years 21 days. I have Abigail Waite Born at Wickford, Rhode Island Feb 10 1767 Daughter of the Rev William Waite and his wife Mary (Nichols) Waite. The Keith Peterson should Keitha Peterson. There are a couple of Keithas mentioned Keitha Blanchard wife of Wm Chalmers Sept 6 1877 to June 24 1902. What a difference a little ole a makes. I was thrilled that Martha posted this, because as you know Im not so good at this researching stuff. I finally took an afternoon off and went to our research centre (they are only open twice a week,) and asked about PERSI, The two dear sweet people that were on staff that day said they really didnt know any thing about PERSI but had heard of them. Every thing I asked about they kept looking up files for Scotland, (too many names the same). While I did enjoy these two people who were trying their best, I knew it wasnt going to be a great genealogical learning experience for me. This list has been nothing but the best, in learning experiences. Sometimes I think there should be a "Genealogy for Dummies" book, published just for me because I just discovered the 1996 Blanchard files, and they are wonderful to read, but they are not in order and that really gets confusing for me trying to find the answers to some of the questions. Thanks Confused Carole
I liked the story forwarded the Group re John Saigon Blanchard. In my notes, I had this person as follows: John-6 BLANCHARD born Salem, Mass., 1776, came to Canada in 1799, founder of Greenbush; About two years after John Blanchard and his wife, Abigail Waite, built their lone cabin by a spring in the bush near Greenbush, John's brother, Aaron Blanchard and his wife, Mabel Lattimer, came over through the forest from Vermont. ------------ The surname of his wife differed from earlier info; "WHITE" rather than "WAITE". Now, with this reference as [REF: article by Harry PAINTING in the Brockville Recorder and Times. From Blanchard references from PERSI - part 4 - 22 Jan 1998], I have some additional lineage. John-7 BLANCHARD (1815 - 1903) born in Greenbush. John Calvin-8 BLANCHARD (8 May 1852 - 11 Jan. 1931) Arthur-9 BLANCHARD (5 May 1889 - 11 Jan 1947) m. Keith PETERSON (28 April 1890 - 6 July 1964) Charlie-10 BLANCHARD (21 Aug. 1918 - ) m. 1941, Gertrude KELLY Marjorie Isabel-11 BLANCHARD m. Kenneth WALLACE. Living in Renfrew. ------ The article may have type errors as the birth year of this one noted as Jean (John) Saigon BLANCHARD is not accurate, with the article having "In 1790 an 18-year old immigrant" - this making his birth date ca.1772 and "died at 74 in 1856" - this making his birth date ca.1782 and my original info having him born in 1776. If he were 18 in 1799 (first data), the dates in the message would be more aligned but would have my first data birth year off by 5 years. Also, regarding the above Athrur-9, it is the first time I have noted a female named Keith. Again, thanks for the posting and the reference to the resource. -- Rannie in COLD-> warm -> COLD Nova Scotia (A-CHEW) Excuse me, got a cold. Index: John. 1776 b. Salem Mass. 24 01 1998 Abigail (Waite). 24 01 1998

I found the following article interesting and thought this might be of interest to BLANCHARD researchers. BLANCHARD Huguenot was first settler at Greenbush, near Brockville, Ontario, Canada. (From an article by Harry PAINTING in the Brockville Recorder and Times). The lure of a fresh spring in the Canadian wilderness led to the founding of the community of Greenbush in the county of Leeds 188 years ago. In 1790 an 18-year old immigrant whose family could be traced back to 16th century France, trekked overland with his bride from their home in Andover, Mass. After a hazardous journey they reached the future sight of Greenbush. He was Jean (John) Saigon BLANCHARD. His wife was Abigail WHITE, born at Wickford, Rhode Island in 1767. They reached Leeds County by way of Hartford, Conn., New York and Oswegatchie (Ogdensburg). According to Mrs. Gertrude Kelly BLANCHARD they were laboriously ferried to what is now Maitland. Then they trudged along a military road to the future site of Brockville. At Maitland, young BLANCHARD was told by surveyors of a beauty spot by a spring in the forest, and was given a rough map of an area northwest of Brockville. The young couple journeyed by covered wagon along forest trails and at last found their spring at the rear of lot 27 in the eight concession of Elizabethtown. They later told relatives that it took many days to clear a passage to the spring. They encountered many friendly Indians, and they were friends indeed, for there was no other white man far or near. With them in the covered wagon was their new-born babe, Amos, who died later in the house they erected. Among their possessions were a musket, and an old colony chest filled with fancy work and their wedding gifts. John also carried the family Bible as well as his fathers military sword, tools for carpentry, an axe, an adze and fishing equipment. Before winter, John BLANCHARD had built his home and a stable ready for his oxen. Says Gertrude BLANCHARD: they were 100% self supporting but subsisted the first year on wild pigeon, wild game and fish. The BLANCHARDs of Greenbush trace their line back to Pierre Jean BLANCHARD, born in France in 1555, a Huguenot who settled in England in 1610. BLANCHARD, fleeing persecution in Normandy, brought his family across the English Channel in his own ship. He had four sons, Thomas, Joseph, Peter and Jean. In England they still faced harassment from religious authorities, and in 1630 the family was given the choice of joining the English church or facing execution. Peter and John joined the church; Thomas and Joseph fled to America, settling near Boston. From Thomas, the line of descent was through Samuel BLANCHARD, Thomas BLANCHARD I and II, Aaron BLANCHARD and John Saigon BLANCHARD, the 18-year-old who founded Greenbush in 1790. After John Saigon BLANCHARD, who died at 74 in 1856, came John, born in Greenbush in 1815, died 1903. John Calvin BLANCHARD was born May 8, 1852 and died Jan. 11, 1931. Arthur, born May 5, 1889 died Jan 11, 1947. Arthur married Keith PETERSON, born April 28, 1890 died July 6, 1964. They were the parents of Charlie BLANCHARD, born Aug. 21, 1918. He married Gertrude KELLY in 1941, and they have one daughter Marjorie Isabel, now Mrs. Kenneth WALLACE of Renfrew. The spacious BLANCHARD home, filled with antiques, its walls lined with pictures of ancestors, was built in 1832 and remains substantially the same as when the pioneer BLANCHARDs put it up. The homestead was placed on the Century Farm list in 1869, having been continuously operated by the family for over a century. I got this from Blanchard references from PERSI - part 4 Hope it helps someone. Marha BLANCHARD
