My response? The following, which I suggest everyone keep and pass along INSTEAD of the silly virus warnings. Sam !! PLEASE READ !! *************************************************** WARNING, CAUTION, DANGER, AND BEWARE! Gullibility Virus Spreading over the Internet! *************************************************** WASHINGTON, D.C.—The Institute for the Investigation of Irregular Internet Phenomena announced today that many Internet users are becoming infected by a new virus that causes them to believe without question every groundless story, legend, and dire warning that shows up in their inbox or on their browser. The Gullibility Virus, as it is called, apparently makes people believe and forward copies of silly hoaxes relating to cookie recipes, E-mail viruses, taxes on modems, and get-rich-quick schemes, revoking of unlimited time offers, saving sick children. FCC allowing telephone companies to charge for access. The list is endless. "These are not just readers of tabloids or people who buy lottery tickets based on fortune cookie numbers," a spokesman said. "Most are otherwise normal people, who would laugh at the same stories if told to them by a stranger on a street corner." However, once these same people become infected with the Gullibility Virus, they believe anything they read on the Internet. "My immunity to tall tales and bizarre claims is all gone," reported one weeping victim. "I believe every warning message and sick child story my friends forward to me, even though most of the messages are anonymous." Another victim, now in remission, added, "When I first heard about Good Times, I just accepted it without question. After all, there were dozens of other recipients on the mail header, so I thought the virus must be true." It was a long time, the victim said, before she could stand up at a Hoaxes Anonymous meeting and state, "My name is Jane, and I've been hoaxed." Now, however, she is spreading the word. "Challenge and check whatever you read," she says. Internet users are urged to examine themselves for symptoms of the virus, which include the following: the willingness to believe improbable stories without thinking the urge to forward multiple copies of such stories to others a lack of desire to take three minutes to check to see if a story is true T. C. is an example of someone recently infected. He told one reporter, "I read on the Net that the major ingredient in almost all shampoos makes your hair fall out, so I've stopped using shampoo." When told about the Gullibility Virus, T. C. said he would stop reading E-mail, so that he would not become infected. Anyone with symptoms like these is urged to seek help immediately. Experts recommend that at the first feelings of gullibility, Internet users rush to their favorite search engine and look up the item tempting them to thoughtless credence. Most hoaxes, legends, and tall tales have been widely discussed and exposed by the Internet community. Courses in critical thinking are also widely available, and there is on-line help from many sources, including Department of Energy Computer Incident Advisory Capability at http://ciac.llnl.gov/ciac/CIACHoaxes.html Symantec Anti Virus Research Center at http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/index.html McAfee Associates Virus Hoax List at http://www.mcafee.com/support/hoax.asp Dr. Solomon's Hoax Page at http://www.drsolomons.com/vircen/vanalyse/va005.html The Urban Legends Archive at http://www.urbanlegends.com Urban Legends Reference Pages at http://www.snopes.com Datafellows Hoax Warnings at http://www.Europe.Datafellows.com/news/hoax.htm Those people who are still symptom free can help inoculate themselves against the Gullibility Virus by reading some good material on evaluating sources, such as Evaluating Internet Research Sources at http://www.sccu.edu/faculty/R_Harris/evalu8it.htm Evaluation of Information Sources at http://www.vuw.ac.nz/~agsmith/evaln/evaln.htm Bibliography on Evaluating Internet Resources at http://refserver.lib.vt.edu/libinst/critTHINK.HTM Lastly, as a public service, Internet users can help stamp out the Gullibility Virus by sending copies of this message to anyone who forwards them a hoax. *************************************************** This message is so important, we're sending it anonymously! Forward it to all your friends right away! Don't think about it! This is not a chain letter! This story is true! Don't check it out! This story is so timely, there is no date on it! This story is so important, we're using lots of exclamation points! For every message you forward to some unsuspecting person, the Home for the Hopelessly Gullible will donate ten cents to itself. (If you wonder how the Home will know you are forwarding these messages all over creation, you're obviously thinking too much.) ************************************************* ** ACT NOW! DON'T DELAY! LIMITED TIME! NOT SOLD IN ANY STORE! ----------

    3. Since I now have more on my Blanchard ancestry, it time for me to post it to see if anyone connects. My Blanchards were French Canadians. Michel Louis Blanchard dit Renaud (Raynaud/Reneau/Renaut) aka Louis Renaud m. Madeleine Dufresne 19 Feb 1781 in St-Charles sur le Richelieu, Que. Madeleine Dufresne was b. 8 Sep 1758 in St-Charles sur le Richelieu and was the daughter of Jacques Dufresne b. 7 Aug 1719 and Marie-Anne Leduc b. 29 Nov 1727. Louis and Madeleine had 2 known daughters; M. Louise m. Amable Loiselle (Loisel) in 1805 and M. Charlotte m. Francois Archambault 6 Oct 1817. I not only have the younger generations but the ancestry of Madeleine Dufresne which includes much Archambault and many other lines. I have a considerably great deal of history of French Canadians in Quebec and in many cases their origination in France. Does any of this sound familiar or is it of any interest to anyone? 1. Re: JOHN (JEAN, JAN) BLANCHARD
    2. I am definately directly descended from these Blanchards. The information I have is from: "The NY Genealogical and Biographical Record Vol. LXXV NY, October, 1944, No.4...The BLANCHARD Family of Elizabeth, New Jersey...Contributed by J. Crawford Hartman, Assistant Librarian John (Jean, Jan) BLANCHARD m. Suzanne REZEAU..Suzanne's father was Rene Rezeau. "Rene REZEAU, mason of the Isle de Re, fled from there with his family after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes." (Baird's Hug. Emig. to Amer. v.I,p.305) John Blanchard Jr., son of John and Suzanne, married Marie Joline, dau. of Andrew Joline. "Andrew Joline, French Huguenot, came to this country from Saint Palais, a seaport in Saintonge, France. He married (2nd) mary Trotter b. 1654, in Newbury, Mass....Had a daughter: Marie (Mary) Joline; married John Blanchard, Jr. (Hug: var. pag.; Col. & Rev. Fams of Phila. 1933, v.I, p. 56.) I assume these BLANCHARDS to be Huguenots...It seems they were marrying Huguenots... I JUST WANT TO KNOW MORE!!!!!!! Cynthia Sheehan

    3. My apologies for the recent unpleasant exchanges on BLANCHARD-L. Rather than enter into the controversy through this List, I chose to deal with the situation on a personal basis but unfortunately this was not successful. I would like BLANCHARD-L to continue as an 'open' list with few if any restrictions on users, but this may no longer be possible. I am a very tolerant person but the situation has escalated to the point where I am about to change the settings on the Listowner Utility Page. Now for some good news. Pat Blanchard Curry has sent a disk containing wonderful data from her BLANCHARD collection that she has been compiling for many, many years. A small group of us is working on a way to share this with all of you and I hope to report soon on how this might be accomplished. Pat is working on more material to send us so we hope to have a 'distribution' plan soon. One method would be to set up a BLANCHARD-L Web Page. I have requested a web account at RootsWeb, in anticipation of this, but Brian and Karen are backlogged with new account requests so it may be some time before I hear from them. As a temporary solution, I have enough space to add some pages to my personal page. Like the BLANCHARD-L account, this would be a sponsor account. As I have done for the List, I will cover the new account ($24/yr., a very resonable amount) and any list members who wish may make a personal donation to RootsWeb. BLANCHARD-L will be a "paid in full" sponsor for both accounts. Last year, when we discussed this, only one member left the list and I hope it was not because I did not make the situation clear. For the last week or two, I have been updating the Index-Line Database. After entering all Lines through 01 Mar 1998, and in anticipation of a B-L Web Page, I decided to convert the database to HTML. I've asked the small group of B-L "Beta Testers" to comment on the page and plan to let you know soon how it can be accessed. My hope is that this will be a much easier way for you to use the database, rather than as an e-mail attachment. For those members without convenient web access, I'll try to find an alternate way for you to use the database. I really need your cooperation in maintaining this database. If you supply "lines" with all your messages, it is much easier for me to copy/paste them to the file. Otherwise, I must compose the "lines" and that requires a lot of time. In order for the Index-Lines to be effective, they should be as complete as possible. If you need that section of Guidelines that summarizes the procedure, let me know. One of my next projects is to update the Greetings/Guidelines message that is sent to all new members and to make a more complete summary of the RootsWeb Archives Search procedures. Other things like List procedures, Guidelines summaries, etc. might be included on a BLANCHARD-L Page. Please send me your suggestions for what to add. Here is the postal address for RootsWeb. 2. Blanchard
    3. Fellow genealogy researchers: As one who is a great-grandparent, I must state that I have not seen such behaviour, as in the past 2 days, since I left elementary school. Everyone has an occassional bad day. Some people are sensitive, some people are bullies, and most are in between. We certainly have seen all three. I am a 'Subscriber' and a genealogy researcher and I have been subjected to embarrassing, needless, e-mail. I am appalled at the attacks on the owner, of BLANCHARD-L, who is providing a service to us. We all voluntarily 'Subscribed' to his list and he accepted us in good faith. Each of us was provided with instructions how to 'Unsubscribe', which should done privately, for just cause against the owner, without public fanfare. Please, lets not see anymore of this type of behaviour. Happy hunting, Martha

In a word, Huguenots! Yes, there really were Huguenots by the name of Blanchard, even though we have no evidence that Thomas Blanchard of England and Massachusetts was one. I'm afraid I can't make any contribution of knowledge about this particular Blanchard family, but I couldn't resist pointing out the significance of the above facts. John

    3. Just a couple of notes on yesterday's incident. - Don't let it bother you. As I said before, it happens in every mailing list, everywhere, at some time or another. The obscenities were totally uncalled for and I think he finally got that message. - This will happen again. Someone will join, become offended at something, go into a hairy conniption fit, and raise Cain. No one person can do anything to stop it on a public forum. But as a group, we can shut it down in short order. - Surprisingly enough, except for the few words that shouldn't be repeated, the members of this mailing list handled it the right way. You converse on a rational level, not an emotional level, and state the facts as you see them. This ended in less than a day. On many other lists, these kinds of threads can go on for days and even weeks. In this case, he unsubscribed himself without the intervention of the List Mom. That's the way it should end. The person recognizes that they don't belong, and they move on. Hopefully we all wish him well in his pursuit of BLANCHARD genealogy. - Several people became offended by parts of the thread. Sadly, that will happen. In a public forum, we will always have those that have little or no respect, especially for the younger readers and what they are being exposed to. Some tried to unsubscribe. My suggestion, when this happens again, take advantage of that "Delete" button with impunity. For those of you that still want to get off the list, try this: Send a message to the following address "BLANCHARD-L-request@rootsweb.com" with just one word in the message body being "unsubscribe". It's that simple. But we hope you don't. You may find that one piece that you are looking for some day. We wouldn't want you to miss it. - I haven't participated in the discussions of this list very much in the past, and I don't intend to until I see "that piece" again. But I have seen the Bruces on other lists which prompted my initial message. Sorry Harold, the part about excluding him from my message was just a ruse. As you may have noticed, he responded quite quickly with some of the offensive language. The purpose of that comment was to find out just how far he would go to continue his "harassment" line. It was also intended to accelerate the issue. If you let things like that go slow, they drag on for days. Bringing it to the forefront forces the issue and, in most cases, a quick resolution. This we saw. - Lastly, for those of you that want to know more about the mailing list server that we use, subscribing and unsubscribing, accessing the archives, and other things like who to complain to, drop in on the following web site URL, http://www.rootsweb.com/~maillist. There you can get just about anything you wanted to know regarding BLANCHARD-L and all of the other names being hosted. 2. Information obtained From NY Genealogical and Biographical Record: John (Jean, Jan) Blanchard first appears in the records in Ulster County, NY, as a baptismal witness at the Dutch Church in Kingston, on Oct 2, 1687, at the baptism of Anna David, daughter of Jan David and Esther Vincent. The other witness was Anne Valleau and there is a notation: "These are French people." (kgB:528) He appears again in the Kingston records, at the baptism of his own child, Anna Blanchard, on Apr 7, 1689. The witnesses were the parents and Marie Mahoult. Again, there is a notation: "French Reformed." (KgB:624.) Marie was probably a sister of John's wife, Anna Mahoult, and of Etienne Mahoult, both natives od La Rochelle, France. John's name appears with about 150 other male inhabitants on a list of "them that haue takin The Oath of Alligiance in Ye County of Ulstr..." in 1689. (DHNY:1-281.) Nor do we know from whom he is descended or how he came to be in the New World. Does anyone have any information as to this John (Jean, Jan) Blanchard. From now on, don't bother writing me - I am going to deleat every message I get that is a person I don't personally know and trust. I don't care what Fletch Blanchard says to you guys about me or anyone else for that matter. Leave me alone. Bruce Aho

    3. March 6th, 1998 2:20 AM Mr. Fletcher Blanchard, To save me the trouble Mr. Fletcher Blanchard, who is your server? How do I write to it.....? Your 'friends' have been steady with their harrassment, and I have been in touch with my server to let them know the progress of things, which so far is none. I expect you to notify your group and threaten to cut them off just like you did to me in your nice way, that way they will also leave me alone. I hope you realize, that the laws apply to you too, Mr. Fletcher Blanchard. I sincerly hope you clean up the act over there, and if your group continues to send me all this junk, I am going to notify my police department and they will be notifying you. Your people have upset me and wasted enough of my time. I have a wedding that I am suppose to go to on Saturday, and a piano lesson to teach in the morning and a house plan that has to be finnished this week. I don't have time for any of this. Sincerely, Bruce Aho You may need to forward this to Sherry, for her address is not working from my location for some reason. ..............
