Hazen, A.M., published 1883. I'd be interested in knowing the source for the marriage and death of John Gowen Blanchard (the one who moved from MA to MD). As for Hazen, he is pretty good, but there are a few mistakes in the earlier generations: > Samuel (son of John & Mary Crosby) b. 17 Aug 1717 Billerica, ... > William b. 21 Mar 1749/50 MA, Small error here. The birth was listed as "1750", and many instances can be found in that era of January-style year numbering. However, the birth was evidently written in Annunciation style (i.e., 1750/1), since the baptism was recorded on 1751 Mar 24 (and this *was* January style!) > Nathaniel b. Aug 1757 MA, Martha b. Aug 1757 MA, The baptism of Nathaniel was recorded on Aug 7, but not his birth. Martha's birth was recorded on Aug 2. > Phinneas b. 1767 MA, Ahimaaz b. 1767 MA, As for Phineas and Ahimaaz, I suppose they might have been twins, but I suspect that "Phineas" was a mistranscription of Ahimaaz into the baptism register. Ahimaaz was born 1767 Apr 26, and "Phinneas" was baptized on 1767 May 3. > John (son of Samuel & Hannah Doggett) ) b. 3 July 1677... > Benjamin b. 5 July 1722, Yes, but you left out David, born 1719/20 Mar 20. > Samuel (son of Thomas and ? possibly Elizabeth)) b. 6 Aug 1627/29 Penton, Lots of people throw in that "Penton", but it seems highly likely that he was born the same place he was christened, i.e., in the parish of Goodworth Clatford. Also, there seems to be no doubt that he was born in 1629. > Children of Samuel and Mary: Samuel b. 29 Sept 1656 Andover, ... Samuel didn't move to Andover until 1686. All the children were presumably born in Charlestown. > Sarah b. 15 > Feb 1656/57 The year was written as "1657" in the family records. January style was hardly ever used that early, so it should be interpreted as 1657/8. This also has the advantage of allowing more than just 5 months after Samuel! > Joshua b. 5 Mar 1660/61 The family records show 1661 Aug 6. As far as I know, that's the only source for Joshua's birth. > Hannah > b. abt 1666 Charlestown, MA, I've never seen any evidence of this early Hannah. She was not entered in the family records. > of Samuel and Hannah: John, Samuel b. 4 July 1680 MA, This Samuel is the only child whose birth appeared in the town records. it was in June. Also, you left out Thomas, born 1674 Apr 28, died 1759 Mar 17. > Thomas d. 21 May 1654 Charlestown, MA; m. (1) (?)Elizabeth , m. (2) Agnes BENT > dau. of Robert BENT and Agnes GOSLING, m. (3) Mary. Several other children are recorded in the baptisms at Goodworth Clatford (see the many notes posted on this subject in the B-L archives), but none of them seem to have lived to adulthood. This may resolve a difficulty in Wyman's description of the probate file for Joshua -- he says there was a payment to "granddaughter Dorothy Stafford". This is diffficult to understand, since Joshua was only 55 when he died and doesn't seem to have had any granddaughters named Dorothy, much less any old enough to be married by 1716. If the reference is to his father's granddaughter Dorothy, then everything makes sense, aside from the stretch of "Stowers" into "Stafford". > (I have not yet determined the meaning of the (#) throughout this work, > does anyone know?) I think these are just references to the numbered list of people in the book with that same surname. I.e., > John, butcher, York, Saco, Boston, presumably illeg. son of (5) ... This John is presumably way down the list. His father would be #5 in the article on Stovers. > Pitts, [p.667] wid. (Mary -Stafford- m. Thomas P. in Boston 18 Dec. 1702). Hmmmm. 3. There are a few mistakes in the first two generations, but not serious ones. (There is, of course, a serious doubt about the assertion of Huguenot ancestry, but that's treated as a minor point here anyhow.) > Mercy, born April 14, 1674, married Thomas Walles of Bra[i]ntree > 2/26/1703 That should be Well[e]s, and the "2" signifies April. > Nathaniel, born June 25, 1728, son of Nathaniel, married Bethiah There is a conflict with the published vital records of North Yarmouth over the later children of this couple. Instead of > Huldah " June 25, 1767 " Lemuel Gurney > Nicholas " Sept. 28, 1769 " Saba Gray > Bela " June 17, 1771 " ??? Staples > Bethiah " March 31, 1774 " Jonathan Moulton they show a second Deborah born in 1767 (two days later than the supposed Huldah) and an Asa born in 1771. Note: the marriages of these four *are* on record, but not their births. As for Deborah and Asa, the second Deb implies that the first died in infancy, so the second one married Nate Rideout. Asa seems to have published an intentionn to marry Lydia White in Pittston in 1794. It would be worth digging into the probate records (if any) to see who Nathaniel's heirs were. There are several Blanchard/Stiles connections, the earliest of which appears to be Fenrich(k) Sibley Blanchard (1852-1925), husband of Julia Elizabeth Stiles, as found in the previous "Blanchard Genealogy". These Stiles came from Yorkshire, England and first settled in 'Rowley Village', MA. Later generations were in Boxford, MA, , Portsmouth, NH, Dover, NH, and Saco, ME. Julia Elizabeth, Joann, Harriet, and Cynthia, all daughters of Edward Stiles of Portsmouth and Dover, NH and Saco, ME, married Blanchards. Then follows some brief Rideout Genealogy. Two early Blanchard/Rideout connections are Beza Blanchard (1765- ? ), husband of Prudence Rideout and Deborah Blanchard (1762 - ? ), wife of Nathaniel Rideout. These Rideouts were also originally from England. For anyone interested in Chase Genealogy (Roxbury, MA; Yarmouth, MA; Newbury, MA, Hampton, NH; Concord, NH; Claremont, NH are a few of the places mentioned), there are also several pages of Chase data from Judith Anderson, who was adopted into the family of Dana Blanchard Chase. Among the Blanchard/Chase connections are Elizabeth Chase, born 1784, wife of Solomon Loring Blanchard (not S. L. B. b. 1842 who married Annie Morrison) and Alexander Chase born 1787, husband of Christiana Blanchard (also not found in Dana B. Chase's "Blanchard Genealogy"). Her name was Grace Amanda Blanchard, born Oct. 8, 1889 in Ashby, Mass. Her father was George M. Blanchard, a carpenter born in Fitchburg, Mass. Her mother was Hattie E. Lawrence, born in Ashburnham, Mass. Dates unknown at this point. My grandmother had a sister, Cora Martha, and brothers George L. and Amos. There probably are others I don't know about. My grandmother came to Lake Forest, Illinois where she married my grandfather, John Rosevear. Her brother George L. also came to Lake Forest, (north of Chicago) where he started the "G.L. Blanchard Co.". I would appreciate any information any of you may have or come across. Thank you! 1. Mary Blanchard, John Stover
    2. Sherry Gould
    3. Hi All, I just came across this record for John Stovers at the Ancestry.com genealogical search site, Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire database. While working on the paper I searched for the identity of Dorothy Stovers/Stowers listed as grandaughter of Samuel Blanchard of Andover, in his will. I found that a Mary Blanchard had married John Stowers and am certain that this Samuel's daughter. Mary had apparently died before her father and brother Joshua of Charlestown was Dorothy's guardian. Essex County Records; 2612 303-199. (Under 19 in grandfather Samuel Blanchard's will.) Legacy paid in 1716 in Admin. of Joshua Blanchard's Estate; Middlesex County Records 1904 pg. 176. I had found in the Families of Salisbury and Amesbury, MA an identity for this John Stowers that would have made him about 10 years Mary's junior. While this was not impossible it seemed improbable. The following better explains this union. (I have not yet determined the meaning of the (#) throughout this work, does anyone know?) 1. Dana BLANCHARD CHASE of Cumberland, ME
    2. Fletcher Blanchard
    3. I am sending this message in three parts: 1. Dana BLANCHARD CHASE of Cumberland, ME 2. DBC Part 2 3. DBC Part 3 Due to the nature of the source of this material, there is no way to discuss these data except to communicate among members of B-L who have some of these names in their databases. There is a possibility that I made errors in transcribing the data and, if so, I'd be glad to check items for you. Fletch _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ These data were supplied by Judith Anderson, adopted daughter of Dana BLANCHARD CHASE who grew up in Cumberland Center, ME. The material is said to have been prepared for Mr. Chase by a professional genealogist in the 1940's. These lines of Thomas BLANCHARD begin with Thomas - Nathaniel - John - Nathaniel -Nathaniel. Judith has made this available to BLANCHARD-L and I have attempted to transcribe the rather poor photocopy. Any questionable words or phrases will be enclosed in { } brackets followed by my best interpretation enclosed in [ ] brackets. The document has been left intact and some possible misspellings, punctuation errors, etc. have been retained. In a few instances I have inserted (xx) to correct apparent spelling errors. Page Nos. begin with No. 7 since the first six pages are devoted to CHASE Genealogy. There are no generational markers or codes so it is sometimes difficult to identify people. Some of these names may sound familiar to members of BLANCHARD-L and I hope you find this information useful. I'll pass along this remark from Judith, "Glad Poppa's line will go to someone else, he would have loved that!" Unfortunately, there are no references.
