Re JOHN GOWEN BLANCHARD (1799-1834) & family; First the birth date for Edward Wyatt BLANCHARD I gave in my Blanchard Connection message of 3/18/98 was incorrect - it should be: 25 Feb 1829, (source-Vital records & Obituary File of Maryland Historical Society Library "d. 29 Aug. 1877 in 49th year" and letter from Rev. Halsey M. Cook of Saint Paul's Parish, Baltimore, MD describes a plaque in the Church which reads "Edward Wyatt Blanchard 1829-1877 Vestryman") which would be consistent with the age given in the 1850 census. The 1825 date came from "The Cattell Family in America" by Donald Heys Rogers. I believe that the children of John Gowen BLANCHARD and Elizabeth Hance PHILPOT were all born in Maryland as John was rector of St. Anne's Episcopal Church in Annapolis at the time of their births. Hello, fellow researchers! I've just returned from Indian Lake, NY in the beautiful Adirondacks and found a whole lot of my Blanchard's buried there. If you think that your family may have settled there, please contact me , I may have some valuable information. To Dave Schyler- I have a George Blanchard b. Ft.Ann 1871. Did we already discuss that one? Kathi kgeorge957@aol.com
Hi all - BLANCHARD-L has reached another small milestone! The data file on the "DESCENDANTS OF [JOSEPH?] & ANN BLANCHARD", prepared by Pat Blanchard Curry of Richmond, CA, is now available for your use, as a web page. We owe a big 'Thank You' to John Chandler for the outstanding work he has done to convert the original WordStar file to a suitable HTML document. John has also added a very useful Name Index. Additional searching can be accomplished using the Find/Search/GoTo feature of your particular web browser. For now, you may access this file at: http://www.klink.net/~fab/josephb.html This is a temporary site and initially, the address is being announced <only to the BLANCHARD-L>. As soon as our request for a web account at RootsWeb has been granted, this file and the Index-Line Database will be transferred to our own BLANCHARD-L Web Page which will probably have a much wider exposure. Please consider the following points. The web page is large (470K) and may require a minute or more to load, depending on your system. The page must be fully loaded before you can search or scroll its contents. If you prefer, download the file to your computer and view it locally by using File - Open (File). This will improve the "load" time. These data that Pat has supplied represent her most complete information on these BLANCHARD lines at the present time. If you have questions about this material, perhaps a List member who is familiar with the names can assist you. Pat is not online so e-mail exchange with her is not possible. Feel free to use her postal address; she is always willing to exchange data. Please observe Pat's request that her document be "preserved in its entirety". An updated document may be prepared at some later date. In the meantime, this document with its publication date 1/98, should be maintained intact. When a BLANCHARD-L Web site is established, we will try to provide additional ways for visitors to intereact among themselves and with members of BLANCHARD-L. Pat is preparing additional BLANCHARD data to share with us. On behalf of BLANCHARD-L, I would like to thank Pat for her wonderful spirit of cooperation. Fletch

Thanks to Pat for the response to my query about Grace Amanda Blanchard's parents and paternal grandparents. It's more information than I could have found in years - since I'm not in Massachusetts. I was wondering if someone could supply me with the complete lineage from Levi and Eliza back to Joseph and Ann. I know it's alot to ask. Pat asked for what information I have on Grace. I will attempt to follow the index line procedures, but I'm really not sure what I'm doing. It's more information > than I could have found in years - since I'm not in Massachusetts. Pat has provided "us" also with a large text file covering the male-line descendants of "Joseph". A small group is at work adapting that file so that it can be viewed via the Web (not an easy task, but I think it will be completed soon). > I was wondering if someone could supply me with the complete lineage > from Levi and Eliza back to Joseph and Ann. I know it's alot to ask. Pending the availability of Pat's file, below is what I have in my files on the line from "Joseph" to Levi's parents. From what I have looked at, Pat's information agrees with this (and has more details). (Note: I didn't include Joseph himself because there is no evidence to show that he was the father of Deacon John. See the archives for several discussions of that topic.) > Pat asked for what information I have on Grace. I will attempt to > follow the index line procedures, but I'm really not sure what I'm > doing. I think I can speak up here and say that the index line format was not intended for the presentation of information, but rather *only* for inclusion in an index for finding the information later on. For one thing, the index entries do not have the month and day of an event, but interested readers will want to know those, and not just the year. Moreover, there is normally no need to present multiple entries in the index for all the events in a person's life -- if a person gets married at a typical age, then someone searching for that event can find the person in the index under the birth entry just as easily. Obviously, the matter of what to index and what not to index has lots of gray areas, but just bear one thing in mind: this index wasn't meant to be a complete database of Blanchard information -- just a quick way of finding the information in the Blanchard archives. What we really need is the information presented in full for the reader and then summarized for the index. John Chandler --------------------------------------------------------------------- Things in [] are either notes about an event or the original notation of the date, if I have re-interpreted it (such as converting to a January-style calendar). References are denoted with '*'. Continuation is marked by a '-' on the left margin. Labels in front of names are reference numbers in a Henry number system. All dates are expressed in January style where possible, but the original notation is always included in a subsidiary comment. dc John /Blanchard/, Dea. Please make the following correction to the directions I sent to the List last evening. When using e-mail to retrieve a BLANCHARD-L message, use only " get latest/xxx " in the message body instead of "get BLANCHARD latest/xxx" Sorry for the error. Fletch <[Using e-mail] <Send message to: BLANCHARD-L-request@rootsweb.com <Subject: archive <message: get latest /xxx <Substitute the number (xxx) of the Mail Mode message you want and it <will be returned. (Remember, this can only be used for 1996/1997 <RootsWeb Mail messages.)
The BLANCHARD-L Index-Line Database is now available on a web page at: http://www.klink.net/~fab/ixpref.htm This is a temporary location until our request for a web account at RootsWeb has been approved. There is a brief Preface that describes the Index-Line Database, a searchable A-Z Name Index, and some Directions for using the Database to retrieve BLANCHARD-L and RmGate messages from the RootsWeb Archives. I hope that making this Database more readily available will encourage its use and will demonstrate why it is important for each of you to include Index-Lines in messages you post to BLANCHARD-L. Please direct any questions to my mailbox. Fletch fab@klink.net
Here is the long overdue summary of the current procedures for conducting BLANCHARD-L Mail List Archives searches and for retrieving files. First, some related comments. 1. Messages <can still be retrieved> from RootsWeb using e-mail. 2. The web site for searching any of the RootsWeb Mail List archives is at: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl 3. John Robertson's Page at: http://www. shelby.net/shelby/jr/robertsn/rwsearch.htm where he gave some tips for searching from the web pages, <is no longer online>. 4. Messages from the former "BLANCHARD Family Genealogy List" at RmGate are also available at RootsWeb Archives. These messages are identified by date only. 5. RootsWeb messages for 1998 are not yet available from the Archives. 6. RootsWeb archived messages are divided into 1996 and 1997. These messages are identified by "latest/xxx" for Mail Mode messages and "volume 97/xxx" for Digest Mode messages. "xxx" refers to the number of the Mail/Digest message. 7. On Wednesday, 25 Mar., Brian Leverich, co-owner of RootsWeb, made the following comments in a message to rootsweb-help@rootsweb.com , <The new search engine box is in beta test now, the USGenWeb <Archives have been reindexed and are now being reindexed on <a regular schedule, Karen's reindexing the mailing list <archives now, and I expect we'll be moving the new search <engine box into production within the next few days. <As soon as the new search engine box is in production, I want to <take a look at ways we might do efficient indexing of all of <RootsWeb's Websites. I think we're going to be able to serve up <something pretty whizzy for everyone to use. Cheers, B. My interpretation of this is that there will soon be a new Search routine for <all> web archives (including Mail Lists) at RootsWeb so whatever "works" now may not be valid then. I don't know how this will affect e-mail access to the archives or whether this option will continue to be offered. 8. This just received from the newly established "RootsWeb Help Desk". <Sponsor accounts for mail list web pages are temporarily on hold. <Your request has been noted - and as soon as more disk space is <available all Requests for mail list web space will be created. Here are procedures that I have found to work. [Using e-mail] Send message to: BLANCHARD-L-request@rootsweb.com Subject: archive message: get BLANCHARD latest /xxx Substitute the number (xxx) of the Mail Mode message you want and it will be returned. (Remember, this can only be used for 1996/1997 RootsWeb Mail messages.) Subject: archive message: dir latest A directory or list of all Mail Mode messages will be returned. This shows the file size, date and message number ( /xxx ) for each message. Messages are <not> in numerical order but appear as: 1, 10, 100, 101, 102, etc. Subject: archive message: search subject: latest/* This will return the Subject: lines for the first 512 messages. Requests for Digest Mode messages and information have, in the past, been sent to: BLANCHARD-D-request@rootsweb.com but I have been unable to retrieve a Digest using the following commands: get Volume97/10 or, get volume97/10 I have been unable to get a list of Digests using the following commands: dir Volume97 dir volume97 ls volume97/* (dir = ls) The Archives Web Search Page can be used to retrieve Digests. To obtain a list of current subscribers to BLANCHARD-L, send to: BLANCHARD-L-request@rootsweb.com Subject: archive message: get dist This is an option that listowners may select and is, for now, available to our list members. [Archives Web Search Page] All Mail List Archive searches start at the main search page: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl 1. Enter the name of the List you wish to search i.e. BLANCHARD, then, Submit. 2. Select the appropriate year for the message(s) you want to search (1997, 1996) then enter your search string (words) in the Query: box. 3. Mail Mode messages. RootsWeb has <not> retained the message number (latest/xxx) in the headers of the messages, therefore, it is necessary to retrieve Mail Mode (individual) messages according to the date the message was posted. (I asked Brian many months ago, if this could be included but I guess it was a minority request). Ex. To retrieve all Mail Mode messages posted on 23 Mar 1997, enter 23&Mar&1997 in the Query Box The symbol "&" represents the Boolean operator "and" and means that you want to search for the complete sequence of the three words, "23" and "Mar" and "1997". Without the "&" symbols, the search would return all matches with "23" or "Mar" or "1997". Because this date does not uniquely identify a single message, the search will return <all messages> that have "23 Mar 1997" in their headers or text. Some of these may be messages that quoted a message posted on that date so you will have to sort them out. I have also found that this search is not 100% accurate, sometimes, messages posted within a day of the date specified, are also returned. 4. Digest Mode Messages You must enter a "search string" to retrieve Digests. Ex. To retrieve the digest volume 97, number 5, enter V97 (or v97) in the Query box and Search. Note that the "&" symbol is required. 5. To perform a search for a particular name, place, etc., enter the "search string" as before with the word or words that you are searching. i.e. Amaziah, Azariel&Blanchard, etc. All messages containing those word(s) will be returned. Note that you can select the Full message with headers, or just the Message Body, when viewing a retrieved message. Select a message and then use the Find/Search feature of your web browser to locate all appearances of the search word(s) in the message. 6. Any message retrieved as a result of a "word search" can be printed from your web browser. You can Copy/Paste a portion of a message to a word processor, text editor, or an "out" message in your mail program, in order to print it. 7. If you know of other ways to perform Archives searches or to obtain lists of Mail/Digest messages, please report them to me. If any of you are listowners/managers and have additional or conflicting information on RootsWeb Archives, please share it with the List. Fletch 29 Mar 1998
Hi all of you out there , I am new to the list and I'm not sure of what I'm doing so please excuse me if I goof! My husbands family is a direct line down from Jeremiah, Jr. I do have some information going back to Theophilus (1710-1761) furnished by, I believe Pat Curry. This includes of course Jeremiah, Sr. There is some question as to where Jeremiah Sr. was born. Is there any on out there who knows? The major share of the information that I have has come from the Michael Shoemaker book. It takes the line down to Martha Blanchard (1831-1892) who was the wife of Charles Issac Abel Chapman (1826-1916). These were the great grandparents of my husband James Dean. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jeremiah, Jr. 1764 b c Coventry, Kent, RI 1998 05 29 _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Abraham/Abram LACKEY: I have seen a report of many of these details before, but with an important difference: the John born in 1763 was listed as son of Nehemiah. It's not from a reliable source, but it would certainly pay to check out the connections in the above line. E.g., find the wills of the elder John and/or his wife Eleanor -- did they mention a granddaughter Sophia? Is there any record of the marriage to Hannah Perrin? Does the John Blanchard of Farmington still have a wife Hannah? Are there probate records for John and/or Hannah in Michigan? And so on. The trouble is that John Blanchard is all too common a name.
