I am new to the Internet, and to the Blanchard list, still trying to figure out how the system works. Imagine my surprise this morning to find the obituary of my aunt, Beatrice Blanchard Freeland, which had just appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle today! She was an amazing woman, whose gracious manner and clear memory of family events will be sorely missed. Heartfelt thanks to Don Fauss for picking up on the story. Perhaps this would be a good time to relate how Bea and I are connected to other Blanchards. We start with Thomas Blanchard, the immigrant, of 1639, who has often been referred to. For several generations our ancestry follows the path quoted by Sherry L. Gould from The History of Canterbury, NH, namely Thomas(1), Samuel(2), Jonathan(3), Benjamin(4), Benjamin(5), Simon(6). According to my family records, Benjamin(5) and Simon(6) lived and died in Peacham, Vermont, as did the next generation, Simon(7), who married Betsey Spencer of Danville, VT. Their son, Phineas Varnum Blanchard left for the California goldfields like so many other sons of Peacham at that time, but he returned to marry the girl next door, Jenny Sargeant, daughter of Asa Sargeant of Peacham. They moved to Osceola, IL, where Phineas started a general store. There their son Milton Eugene was born in 1865. Soon they moved on to San Francisco, where Phineas drove a milk wagon. He was killed by a runaway horse on a return visit to Osceola. His son Milton was then in his senior year at UC Berkeley, where he was studied philosophy and was captain of the 1886 football team. His second son Marion had just graduated from high school. Marion took over driving the family milk wagon, supporting a widowed mother and tubercular sister Lena so Milton could graduate from college. Then Milton drove the milk wagon while Marion went to Berkeley. Ultimately Marion graduated from law school and Milton got a Ph.D. in philosophy from Harvard. Milton married Henrietta Bayly Blanchard, a San Francisco schoolteacher who later became a concert singer and teacher of voice in San Francisco and Mills College, Oakland. Their daughter Beatrice was born in 1898, son Francis Bayly in 1906 (after the earthquake.) I can't resist telling a Blanchard family story. Peacham VT, where four generations of Blanchards lived for a hundred years, has always been special in my family, with each generation since having returned, either for a year of education at the Peacham Academy or just to sightsee and search for roots. Beatrice Blanchard Freeland often told of a visit she once made to Peacham in the 1930's. She asked everyone she encountered if there were still any Blanchards in Peacham, but alas, no one knew of any. Finally she was referred to one Aunt Mercy Hooker, who (it was said) had once been married to a Blanchard and was now in her extreme old age. "Ah yes", said she, "I remember the Blanchards." (Long pause, while Aunt Mercy thought what to say about them.) Finally she offered these defining words: "Lots of 'em QUEER, but none of 'em CRAZY." (I hasten to add that "queer" meant "peculiar" to Aunt Mercy.) I hope this doesn't shock any Peacham descendants! It delighted our clan, who thought perhaps we could adopt the words as a sort of family motto. I will submit an index record as soon as possible, but this is too long already! --Betsy Blanchard Burr

I found this in our SF Chronicle this morning on the web. Don Fauss (fauss@itsa.ucsf.edu) Beatrice Blanchard Freeland Glen Martin Tuesday, May 19, 1998 ©1998 San Francisco Chronicle URL: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/1998/05/19 /MN67060.DTL Beatrice Blanchard Freeland, one of the country's first female national park rangers and a survivor of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, died May 11 at St. Helena from natural causes. She was 99. A fourth-generation Californian, Mrs. Freeland was born in San Francisco and witnessed the great earthquake. She vividly recalled watching a Geary Street girl's high school crumble into rubble and dust. She graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1920 with a degree in music and taught music in public schools for two years. Her love for nature was intense. ``A teacher had said to her, `When I saw El Capitan (in Yosemite), my life was changed,' '' said Mrs. Freeland's daughter, Phyllis Freeland Broyles. ``So when she was in college, she went camping in Yosemite. When she saw the valley, she lost her heart.'' While teaching in the Sacramento Valley town of Corning, she met Dixon Freeland, whom she married in 1922. The couple moved to Yosemite National Park in 1923, where they worked as seasonal rangers. >From that point, the Freelands joined their careers to the National Park Service, working at national parks and monuments in South Dakota, Florida, New Mexico and Virginia. Mr. Freeland became a national park superintendent in 1931. The couple finished their careers at Lassen National Park, where they served from 1953 to 1961, when Mr. Freeland retired. For the next 25 years, the couple lived at Innisfree, a rural Napa Valley property on the Silverado Trail near Calistoga. Mr. Freeland died in 1986, and Mrs. Freeland moved to St. Helena. Politicians, authors and movie stars were guests at Mrs. Freeland's Lassen home, and she was known throughout the park service as a hostess of peerless hospitality. Her love for music stayed with her for her entire life, and she often entertained guests with impromptu performances on the small piano that accompanied her everywhere. In the 1930s, she organized a group of Civilian Conservation Corps employees into a vocal quartet that was popular throughout South Dakota's Black Hills. In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Freeland is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Dixon Blanchard Freeland and Ann Neasham Freeland of Luray, Va.; a son-in-law, Rothwell P. Broyles of Calistoga; six grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; a brother, Francis B. Blanchard of Walnut Creek; and a cousin, Barbara Blanchard DeWolfe, of Santa Barbara. Her son and son-in-law are retired from the National Park Service, and three grandchildren are career Park Service employees. ``The blood in this family flows National Park Service green,'' said Phyllis Freeland Broyles. A celebration in memory of Mrs. and Mr. Freeland is planned for the summer. Donations may be made to the National Park Service Employees and Alumni Education Fund or the music department at the University of California at Berkeley. Brian Leverich at RootsWeb has announced that their new search engine is now online. To search any of the mail list archives that are housed at RootsWeb, go to: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl and enter the name of the Mail List you wish to search [ex. BLANCHARD-L] and Submit. To search the USGenWeb Archives, go to: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ussearch.htm I will prepare a summary of search procedures for B-L and will update that section of the Greetings/Guidelines message. In the meantime, here are some tips from the GeorgiaGenWeb Archives page that will be a good starting point. Thanks to Carla Cegielski cegielski@ncweb.com for offering this on the listowner-L Mail List. Search Tips: Searches are not case sensitive Valid operators are: AND OR ANDNOT Right truncation is supported using the asterisk * as a wildcard Search for phrases by enclosing search terms in quotation marks Use parentheses to remove ambiguity from search expressions. Otherwise, operators execute from left to right. Examples: John AND Ruffin - retrieves documents in which the words John and Ruffin <both> appear somewhere in the document. "John Ruffin" - (with quotes) retrieves occurrences where the word John appears <next> to the word Ruffin. John Ruffin - (without quotes) finds documents where <either> the word John <or> the word Ruffin appears. will OR probate - returns documents containing <either> word. Midway ANDNOT Appling - retrieves documents that contain the word Midway but <not> the word Appling. Richards* - finds all words <beginning> with Richards, including Richards, Richardsen, Richardson, etc. Ruffin AND (deed* OR indenture*) Use parentheses to ensure results. This search expression retrieves documents containing Ruffin <and> either deed, deeds, indenture, or indentures. Without the parentheses, it will find documents containing Ruffin and deed or deeds <OR> documents that contain the words indenture or indentures whether they contain the search term Ruffin or not. (The AND operator is executed <first>, illustrating the left-to-right execution; followed by the OR operator) . These examples apply mostly to GenWeb Archives searches but are equally applicable to the Mail List Archives. I will prepare a summary of search expressions that can be used to retrieve Mail or Digest mode messages and that can be used in connection with our Index-Line Database. _ _ _ _ _ _ Tomorrow, I plan to attend the Spring Meeting of the Genealogical Society of Vermont in the hope of learning more about the elusive Abner BLANCHARD and his <son?> Asahel. My Matilda Blanchard was born 6 Aug 1815, possibly in VT or NY. She married Amraphael Russell in the early 1830s, likely around Cattaraugus County NY. Their first child, Susan Russell, was born in York, Livingston County, NY, in 1833; their son Joseph was born in Ohio in 1839. Matilda died 11 Sep 1844, likely in either Ohio or New York. Does anyone know who her parents were, or which Blanchard family she belongs to? Any help very much appreciated. -Jim in Redmond, WA. e-mail: 70334.1307@compuserve.com
Hi fellow Acadian Researchers of French origin: Does anyone know of any census taken in Acadia before 1671? Does anyone know of other passenger ship lists, of early Acadians who came to New France in the 1600s, other than of the 'Saint Jehan' in 1636? Hi All, Today I went to meet with the Vice Regent of our DAR Chapter, (who will become Regent and I Vice Regent next week) to do some planning for chapter chairmen, etc. Millie was speaking of Polly, a member who has recently returned to the chapter. She said she wanted to have Polly serve as the chairman for Genealogical Records and Lineage Research. As I watched Millie write Polly's name I realized it was Pauline Johnson Oesterlin. He adds that: "Certainly this listing does not even approach a complete listing of all marriages in New Hampshire. If the name sought is not in the following list, the researcher's next source for marriage information should be the New Hampshire Bureau of Vital Records and Health Statistics, Department of Health and Human Services, Hazen Drive, Concord, NH 03301. Not finding a record there one should next inquire to the clerk of the town in which the marriage was solemnized for it has always been required that the parties register with the town clerk."

Hi all, I have been looking through the book "New Hampshire Marriage Licenses and Intentions, 1707-1961," by Pauline Johnson Oesterlin (1991) from the NEHGS Circulating Library. As the book says, one of the first laws promulgated by the New Hampshire legislature in 1679 required that intentions of marriage be published openly at least three times or posted in a conspicuous spot in the community for fourteen days prior to the event. It is a popular book and has a long waiting list. While I have the book, I thought I'd check for Blanchard names and post them here. There are not many but the information may help someone. The entries give the name and residence of both the bride and bridegroom, the date the intention was filed, and the origin of the report. There was only one bridegroom's name: BLANCHARD James P of Durham and DAME Martha of Durham int 20 May 1850 rept from Goffstown The listing of brides included: FRENCH Nathaniel & BLANCHARD Sarah 9 Dec 1773 (marriage license #211 issued by Gov. Hello, Ok, here is the low down on my line. Thomas has a child with Elizabeth named Nathaniel. Nathaniel married Susanah Bates and one of thier children was named John. He Married Abigale Phillips. And they had a son John, Deacon John. So there were two different Deacon John Blanchards. Now, here is were my interest lies. Deacon John Blanchard, son of Joeseph Blanchard, brother of Thomas, married a Hanna Brackett. Who died at Brackett masacre site in Salsbury. Now here is the funny thing, My Mothers Mother, My Grandmother, is a Brackett, decendant of those who died at the hands of the Indians. So i have a interesting thing going on im trying to loop it back around to both sides of my family. ANyhow, sorry about the confusion. Any info would be great. And thanks for you Help. Thanks to Bob for contributing the data. Before anyone worries that Bob didn't prepare the index entries for his posting on cemetery data, let me note that there are already two archived messages on this same subject that did have index entries, both from last Fall (once by death date and once by birth). I'm glad to observe that the data agree 100%. Also, this is a good example of how to find things quickly using the Rootsweb search engine. Go to the engine at http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl enter the list name BLANCHARD-L in the blank to submit, then type in the query as VALE+END select 1997, and click on Search -- you get exactly two hits, and they are the two messages in question. (The "+" means search for the two words back-to-back). By the way, 1998 is now available in the search engine, so you can do the same for 1998 and call up Bob's posting as well. Also, using HOOKER+FARM as the query gets the same results. John
